What a Dhana yoga is

“Dhana” means wealth, and Dhana yoga is the family name for the combinations the tradition links with resources. In Jyotish the 2nd house stands for accumulated assets, family resources and speech, and the 11th house for income and gains. The 1st house is the self, the 5th is merit and intelligence, and the 9th is fortune. A Dhana yoga forms when the lords of these houses are tied together, so that effort, merit and fortune work as one.

There is no single Dhana yoga. Texts describe many, and teachers favour different ones. This finder uses the widely taught pattern, and states the rule so that you can see exactly what was tested.

How the finder works it out

From your birth details the tool works out the sidereal planets (Lahiri ayanamsa) and the rising sign, and lists the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses. The yoga engine behind the Yoga Analysis panel of the free kundali has no Dhana rule of its own, so the finder applies that engine’s own tests of conjunction, aspect and sign exchange to these lords. A result is reported when the lord of the 2nd or the 11th is tied by conjunction, mutual aspect or sign exchange to another wealth-house lord. The older yoga list on the kundali checks only one form, a conjunction of a 2nd or 11th lord with a 1st, 5th or 9th lord, and every such case is found here as well.

The result lists each link with the planets and the houses, then a table of your wealth-house lords, and a note when a single planet rules two of those houses.

How to read it

Treat a Dhana yoga as describing capacity and opportunity. A link between the 2nd and 11th lords is read as a chart in which savings and income support each other. A link between the 11th lord and the 5th or 9th lord ties gains to merit and fortune. A link with the lagna lord ties resources to the person’s own effort. Which of these matters most depends on the planets. Jupiter and Venus are the natural significators of wealth, and a link that involves a strong one is read as more reliable than one made between two weak planets.

Do not read an amount into the result, and do not expect it to show on a timetable. The tradition places the results in the dashas of the planets that form it, and the 12th house, which governs expenses, always sits on the other side of the ledger. The Dhana yoga guide and the house lords guide explain how the lords of each house are read.

What weakens it

The same conditions that dim any yoga apply here. A planet that is combust, a planet that is debilitated, a planet in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, and a 2nd or 11th lord that also rules a dusthana are all read as lowering the result. The finder lists whichever of these apply to the planets in your yoga. It also tells you when the same planet rules two wealth houses, which many teachers treat as a Dhana yoga in itself, though the finder does not count it as a link between two planets.

Why finders disagree

Search for Dhana yoga and you will find lists with dozens of rules, some of them overlapping and some in conflict. Some require only that the lords look at each other, some want the lords in the 2nd or 11th house itself, and some add the planets in those houses. A tool that reports a Dhana yoga for almost every chart is usually using the loosest list. This finder uses a set that is easy to check by hand, and every result carries its working.

If the result is “does not form”, that is not a statement about money. Income in a life comes from skill, timing, health and circumstance far more than from a single pattern in a chart. The Mahadasha calculator shows which planet’s period is running now, which is often a more practical question.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Which houses count for Dhana yoga?

The 2nd and 11th are the core wealth houses, and the 1st, 5th and 9th are the supporting houses of self, merit and fortune. A link between the lord of a core house and another of these lords forms the yoga in this finder.

↳ Does a Dhana yoga guarantee wealth?

No. It describes an alignment that classical teachers read as favourable for resources, and the results depend on the strength of the planets and the dashas. It is not a promise or a forecast of any sum.

↳ What if no Dhana yoga forms in my chart?

Many people with no such yoga live comfortably, and many with one do not feel it. Other factors, such as the strength of Jupiter and Venus, the dashas and your own effort, carry more weight in practice.

↳ Why does the kundali list a different Dhana yoga result?

The older yoga list on the kundali checks conjunctions only. This finder also counts mutual aspects and sign exchanges, so it can report a yoga the older list does not, and it never reports less.
