The elephant and the lion

Gaja means elephant and Kesari means lion. The name belongs to one of the most quoted yogas in Jyotish, a pairing of Jupiter, the planet of wisdom and good counsel, with the Moon, the planet of mind and public standing. Classical teachers read it as a mark of intelligence, a good name and the ability to be respected even when circumstances are hard. Because it is so often quoted, it is also often over-sold, and this finder tries to give the plain facts.

How it is worked out

Enter your date, time and place of birth. The tool finds the sidereal positions of the Moon and Jupiter (Lahiri ayanamsa) and counts the signs from the Moon to Jupiter. If Jupiter is in the same sign as the Moon, or the 4th, 7th or 10th sign from it, the yoga forms by the rule. The result comes from the same yoga engine that powers the Yoga Analysis panel of the free kundali, so the two always agree on whether the yoga is present.

Since the count starts from the Moon, the verdict is the same for anyone born while the Moon and Jupiter occupy those two signs. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so the birth date matters a little and the exact minute very little, except near a sign change.

How common it is

Four of the twelve possible positions qualify, so roughly one chart in three has Gaja Kesari yoga. That is worth keeping in mind. A yoga found in a third of all charts cannot be a rare mark of greatness, and the tradition does not treat it as one. Teachers read its quality from the planets: a Jupiter in a sign it likes and a Moon that is waxing and well placed give the yoga its full voice, while the bare fact of the position says much less.

What weakens it

The classical list is short and is checked for you. Jupiter in Capricorn, its sign of debilitation, and Jupiter that is combust are both read as lowering the yoga, and the engine marks such a result as qualified. A Moon in Scorpio, its sign of debilitation, is read the same way. Teachers also look at whether either planet sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the rising sign, or is closely joined by Rahu, Ketu or a harsh planet. Many teachers also read the strength of the Moon by its phase, with a waxing Moon seen as a steadier partner for Jupiter. When any of these applies to your chart the finder lists it plainly. It is a reason to read the yoga carefully, and not a verdict.

When Jupiter is in the very same sign as the Moon, the rule as written counts it, though teachers differ on how much weight that form carries, and the finder adds a short note when it applies.

Reading the result with the dashas

Gaja Kesari yoga is read as giving its results mainly in the dashas of Jupiter and the Moon, and in the sub-periods of their lords. Use the Mahadasha calculator to see when those periods run in your life. Remember that a good period is a period of opportunity, and nothing is delivered without effort. The guide to Gaja Kesari yoga discusses the classical statement in detail, and the Moon sign calculator shows your Moon sign if you want to see how the Moon was placed.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Is Gaja Kesari yoga counted from the Moon or the ascendant?

From the Moon. Jupiter must be in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign from the Moon, and the rising sign does not enter the rule.

↳ Why do so many people have it?

Four of the twelve possible positions of Jupiter relative to the Moon qualify, so about one chart in three has it. Its value lies in how strong the two planets are, not in its rarity.

↳ Is the yoga cancelled if Jupiter is debilitated?

Many teachers say it is weakened rather than cancelled, and the engine marks it as qualified. Check whether another factor, such as a cancellation of the debilitation, applies in your chart.

↳ Does it need my exact birth time?

Hardly. Only the Moon and Jupiter matter, and the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days. The exact minute matters only if the Moon changes sign close to your birth time.
