A weak planet and its way out
Every planet from the Sun to Saturn has a sign in which the tradition says it is at its lowest, called its debilitation. The Sun is debilitated in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo and Saturn in Aries. A debilitated planet is read as working below its natural capacity. Neecha Bhanga, the “breaking of the low”, is the name for the situation in which that weakness is cancelled. Combined with Raja yoga, the royal combination, it describes a late rise after an early difficulty. The idea is a comforting one, and that is why it needs a careful check.
What the finder does
The yoga engine behind the Yoga Analysis panel of the free kundali has 26 yogas, and this is not one of them. The kundali’s older yoga list checks only the first condition, so the finder tests the whole list. First it finds every planet in its sign of debilitation in your chart (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa). Then, for each one, it tests eight conditions drawn from the guide to Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga:
- The lord of the sign of debilitation stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The lord of the sign where the planet would be exalted stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The planet that is exalted in the sign of debilitation stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The planet is joined or aspected by the lord of its debilitation sign or its exaltation sign.
- The planet is in a sign exchange with another planet.
- The planet itself stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.
- The planet is exalted in the navamsa chart.
- Two debilitated planets aspect each other.
It shows each condition as holding or not, with the planets and houses, and gives a count.
Main conditions and supporting ones
The first three conditions are the core of the rule: they all ask whether a planet connected to the debilitated one is strong in an angle. Most teachers who accept a cancellation want one of these. The other five are supporting conditions that some authors list and others leave out. The finder labels the difference, because a chart where only supporting conditions hold is a partial case, and it says so. When the planet that does the cancelling is the Moon, the Moon is always in a kendra from itself, so only the Lagna counts for the conditions that involve it.
Why caution is wise
This is perhaps the most over-diagnosed yoga in popular astrology. A long list of conditions makes it easy to find a cancellation in many charts, and a reader who is anxious about a debilitated planet will be glad to find one. The finder prints the conditions that fail as clearly as those that hold, so you can see the whole picture. A genuine Neecha Bhanga is one where the planet that cancels the weakness is itself strong. If that planet is combust, debilitated or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, the finder notes it, because many teachers then read the cancellation as partial.
A debilitated planet without a cancellation is not a sentence. The tradition describes it as a planet whose themes need patient effort, and its dasha is a period for steady work. Many people with such a planet find that the area it governs is the one they grow most in.
Reading the result
If a main condition holds, read the yoga as a debilitation that gives way, strongest in the dasha of the planet concerned. The Mahadasha calculator shows when that is. The Raja yoga finder checks the royal combinations separately. If nothing holds, or if no planet is debilitated, the finder says so plainly. Rahu and Ketu are left out of the test, because teachers do not agree on a sign of debilitation for them.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What does debilitated mean in astrology?
It means a planet stands in the sign where the tradition says it is weakest, for example Jupiter in Capricorn. It is read as working below its usual capacity, not as ruin.
↳ Which condition matters most?
The first, that the lord of the debilitation sign stands in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon. It is the most widely quoted, and the first three conditions together form the core of the rule.
↳ Can I have Neecha Bhanga with no strong planet?
Technically a condition can hold while the planet that cancels is weak. Many teachers then read the cancellation as partial, and the finder points out when that is the case.
↳ Why are Rahu and Ketu not tested?
Teachers disagree about which signs are their exaltation and debilitation, so the finder tests only the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn, for which the signs are agreed.
↳ What if my debilitated planet has no cancellation?
It is an ordinary result. The tradition suggests patient effort in that planet's area and often mantra or conduct for its themes, and it makes no prediction of failure.
