The five great person yogas

Pancha Mahapurusha means “five great persons”. The tradition names five yogas, one for each of the planets from Mars to Saturn, which form when that planet is in very good dignity and stands in an angle of the chart. They are Ruchaka for Mars, Bhadra for Mercury, Hamsa for Jupiter, Malavya for Venus and Shasha for Saturn. Each is read as the planet’s best qualities being built into the person: courage and command for Mars, intellect and speech for Mercury, wisdom and standing for Jupiter, refinement and comfort for Venus, and discipline and endurance for Saturn.

They are less common than many yogas, because both conditions must hold at once, and that is why they have the grand name.

The rule the finder applies

A planet from Mars to Saturn must be in its own sign or its sign of exaltation, and also in a kendra, the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, counted from the rising sign. The Sun and Moon do not form one, and the nodes are not counted. The finder works out your rising sign and the planets (sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa) and asks the yoga engine behind the Yoga Analysis panel of the free kundali for each of the five. You see which yogas form, which do not, and for each one that does not, the exact reason: the planet may be dignified but outside the kendras, or in a kendra but in a sign that is not its own.

Since the kendra is counted from the rising sign, these yogas need an accurate birth time. A few minutes can change the rising sign near a boundary, and the houses move with it. If your result seems surprising, check your birth time first.

How to read a yoga that forms

A Mahapurusha yoga is read as a strength to build on, and the planet’s other conditions colour it. A Hamsa yoga is described as a chart with a naturally teacherly, principled core. A Malavya yoga is read as a chart in which beauty, relationships and comfort are central. A Shasha yoga is described as authority that comes slowly through steady work. The tradition uses lofty language for these, and the honest reading is more modest: the planet is unusually well placed, and the life tends to draw on its themes.

Strength varies. An exalted planet is read as stronger than one that is merely in its own sign. A planet that is also vargottama, in the same sign in the navamsa chart, is read as steadier. Look at the navamsa column in the table below the result, and at the Navamsa calculator for the full divisional chart.

What weakens a Mahapurusha yoga

Teachers name combustion, a close tie with a node, and weakness in the navamsa chart. A planet that is debilitated in the navamsa is read as lowering the promise of the yoga in the rashi chart, and the finder says so when it applies. Retrograde motion is not usually counted as a weakness for these yogas, since a retrograde planet is often read as strong. The yoga also depends on timing: it speaks most clearly in the dasha of its planet, which the Mahadasha calculator shows.

Learning more about each yoga

Each of the five has its own guide with the classical description: Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Shasha. They explain the planet’s dignity, the houses and the typical readings. If none of the five forms in your chart, take it calmly. Most charts carry no Mahapurusha yoga, and the free kundali can check the other yogas in the same engine.

Frequently asked questions

↳ How rare are the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas?

Fairly uncommon, because a planet must be in its own or exaltation sign and in a kendra at once. A minority of charts have one, and fewer have two.

↳ Why are the Sun and Moon not included?

The classical rule names only the five planets from Mars to Saturn. The Sun and Moon have their own combinations, and the nodes are not counted in this rule.

↳ Does a retrograde planet cancel the yoga?

Not usually. Many teachers read a retrograde planet as strong. Combustion and weakness in the navamsa are the more common cautions.

↳ Why does the yoga depend on my birth time?

The kendras are counted from the rising sign, which changes about every two hours. A small error can move a planet in or out of a kendra, and so change the result.

↳ If I have one, what should I do with it?

Read it as a strength to build on, in the themes of that planet. It does not replace effort, and the dasha of the planet is usually when it is most visible.
