In shortChapter 5 begins the last episode. Shumbha and Nishumbha have taken the three worlds, and the gods go to the Himalaya and sing the long hymn that includes Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu. The goddess Kaushiki comes out of Parvati. Shumbha hears of her beauty and sends a messenger with an offer of marriage, and she answers with a vow.

Chapter 5 of the Devi Mahatmya has 79 verses in the Markandeya Purana numbering (chapter 85 of the Purana). It opens the last episode (the uttara charita), which runs from chapter 5 to chapter 13 and is the longest of the three. It is also the chapter that contains the best known hymn in the whole book, the one that gives the line Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu.

The sage Medhas is still telling the story to King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi. At the end of chapter 4 the goddess promised the gods that she would help them whenever they remembered her. In this chapter two new demons arise, and the gods keep that promise.

What happens in this chapter

Shumbha and Nishumbha, two demon brothers, take the three worlds from Indra, along with the shares of the sacrifices and the offices of the Sun, the Moon, Kubera, Yama, Varuna, the Wind and Fire (verses 1 to 4). The gods remember the promise and go to the Himalaya, the lord of the mountains (verses 5 and 6).

There they sing the hymn of verses 7 to 39. It begins with a few verses of homage, and then comes a long run of verses (12 to 37, which are twenty-six in our numbering and twenty-three in the print) that all follow one pattern: to the goddess who stands in all beings in the form of such and such, bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, again and again bow. The verses 38 and 39 close the hymn with a prayer for her help.

While they sing, Parvati comes to bathe in the Ganga and asks whom they are praising. From the sheath of her body (kosha) a second goddess comes out and says that the hymn is addressed to her. Because she came from that sheath, she is called Kaushiki (verse 43). Parvati herself turns dark and becomes Kalika, who dwells in the Himalaya (verse 44). It is a short passage and it matters, because Kaushiki is the one who will fight Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Next, Shumbha’s servants Chanda and Munda see her on the mountain and describe her to Shumbha as a jewel of a woman, and list all the jewels he has already taken (verses 45 to 56). Shumbha sends his messenger Sugriva with an offer: she should become his wife or Nishumbha’s (verses 57 to 68). She answers with a vow, that she will marry only the one who defeats her in battle and takes away her pride (verses 69 to 73). The messenger warns her, and she tells him to go back and repeat her words (verses 74 to 79).

The forms in the hymn

The long run of verses 12 to 37 names the goddess as the quality that is present in every living being. Read in order, it is a short list of what a person is made of.

VerseThe goddess asVerseThe goddess as
12Vishnu's Maya25Beauty (kanti)
13Consciousness (chetana)26Good fortune (lakshmi)
14Understanding (buddhi)27Steadiness (dhriti), not in the print
15Sleep (nidra)28Livelihood or activity (vritti)
16Hunger (kshudha)29Memory (smriti)
17Shadow (chhaya)30Compassion (daya)
18Power (shakti)31Good conduct (niti), not in the print
19Thirst (trishna)32Contentment (tushti)
20Patience (kshanti)33Nourishment (pushti), not in the print

22Modesty (lajja)35Delusion (bhranti)
23Peace (shanti)36Ruler of the senses and pervader of beings
24Faith (shraddha)37Consciousness (chiti) pervading the whole world

The list is a reminder that the goddess of this book is not only the figure with weapons. She is hunger and sleep as well as compassion and memory, and she is delusion as well as understanding. This is the same teaching as in chapter 1, where the sage said that the great Maya binds and also frees.

A note on the list in the print

The Nirnaya Sagar print, which is the text on this page, gives twenty-one forms before the verse on the senses, and not twenty-four. It does not have steadiness (dhriti), good conduct (niti) or nourishment (pushti). The GRETIL e-text and Sanskrit Wikisource, which follow the Markandeya Purana, have all twenty-four. We keep the three extra verses on the page so that the verse numbers stay those of the Purana, but we mark each one as not in the print and do not treat it as part of the text. Printed recitation books differ over this list, so the numbering of the hymn in a book you may be holding can differ from our verse numbers.

The hymn is usually printed separately in recitation books under the name Devi Suktam, to be told apart from the Rigvedic hymn of the same name, which you can read on the Devi Suktam page. This page gives each verse in Devanagari with a plain transliteration and a meaning in our own words.

Chapter summary

Shumbha and Nishumbha have taken the three worlds and the shares of the sacrifices. The gods go to the Himalaya and praise the goddess in the hymn that contains Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu, naming her as every quality that lives in beings, from understanding and memory to hunger, sleep and delusion.

Parvati comes to the Ganga, and the goddess Kaushiki comes out of her body. Shumbha’s servants Chanda and Munda see her and describe her to Shumbha. He sends the messenger Sugriva to offer marriage to her, and she answers that she will marry only whoever defeats her in battle and takes away her pride. She sends the messenger back to repeat her words, and the war is set up for chapter 6.

Source of the text on this page. The Sanskrit is the text of the Nirnaya Sagar Press edition of the Saptashati (Bombay, Shaka 1839, which is 1917 CE, edited by Vasudev Laxman Shastri Panshikar and published by Tukaram Javaji), read page by page from the scan on archive.org (identifier SaptashatiNirnayaSagarPress, scan pages 162 to 182 for this chapter). We follow the print's readings. We space the words and write the nasals in the usual style of this site, and we do not count that as a difference. The GRETIL e-text of the Markandeya Purana (where this chapter is chapter 85) and Sanskrit Wikisource are used as witnesses only: where they read differently from the print, their readings are listed under the heading above. The print numbers its speaker lines, and its own running count reaches 388 at the end of this chapter; this page keeps the Markandeya Purana numbering, so the verse numbers differ. It is the repeated line in the hymn in chapter 5 of the Devi Mahatmya, verses 12 to 37 of the numbering used here. Each verse says that the goddess stands in all beings in a certain form, such as understanding, sleep, hunger or memory, and ends with the bow, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

↳ What does Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu mean?

It means roughly: to the goddess who stands in all beings in the form of such and such, bow to her, bow to her, bow to her, again and again bow. The form changes from verse to verse.

↳ Who is Kaushiki?

Kaushiki is the goddess who comes out of the sheath (kosha) of the body of Parvati when Parvati comes to the Ganga and sees the gods praising the goddess. She is the one who will fight Shumbha and Nishumbha.

↳ What is the goddess's vow in this chapter?

She says that whoever defeats her in battle, takes away her pride and is her equal in strength in the world will be her husband. This is her answer to Shumbha's offer of marriage.

↳ How many verses does chapter 5 have?

It has 79 verses in the Markandeya Purana numbering used here, where it is chapter 85 of the Purana. Printed recitation books number the verses differently, so a verse number from one will not match the other.
