Magha is the tenth of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It fills the first 13° 20′ of Leo, so every Moon in Magha is in Leo, and it begins the moment the Moon leaves the watery end of Cancer. The name is usually translated as “the mighty” or “the great”, and the nakshatra is the one most tied to ancestry, inheritance and rightful place.

The deity and the story
Magha belongs to the Pitris, the ancestors. In the tradition they are the departed fathers of a family line who live on in Pitriloka and who are remembered with water and sesame seeds (tarpana) and with the rice balls of the shraddha rite. The Vedic hymns speak of them as the ones who went before and opened the road, and they are honoured as kin to be thanked, never as beings to be feared.
The nakshatra’s symbol is a throne, often drawn empty. Teachers read the empty seat as a place waiting for an heir: someone arrives to take up a position that others held before them. A hymn in the Rigveda that celebrates a wedding names Magha, and the lists of nakshatras and their deities in the Taittiriya texts give the Pitris to this star. The Hindu month of Magha takes its name from the nakshatra near which its full moon falls.
Its ruler Ketu is the planet of detachment and memory, which gives Magha a quiet paradox that teachers like to point out: the planet of letting go presides over the star of inheritance. Its bright star is Regulus, long called the heart of the Lion and in Western astrology the Royal Star.
Temperament in the classical texts
Traditional descriptions of a Moon in Magha come mostly from the deity and the symbol rather than from one verse, and they agree on a pattern. The person is dignified, aware of rank and of family background, loyal to elders and to custom, and happiest where responsibility is clearly given. Leadership comes naturally, often through institutions, service to a community or a family business.
The same sources note the other side with equal calm. Pride can be easily hurt, formality can look like distance, and a strong sense of what is owed to one’s name can make it hard to bend. Those who write about Magha usually suggest putting the energy into service and gratitude, for example the ancestral rites the tradition recommends, rather than into status. Everything here describes a tendency. A birth chart has many other parts.
The four padas
| Pada | Span | Navamsa sign | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0° 00′ to 3° 20′ Leo | Aries | Ma |
| 2 | 3° 20′ to 6° 40′ Leo | Taurus | Mi |
| 3 | 6° 40′ to 10° 00′ Leo | Gemini | Mu |
| 4 | 10° 00′ to 13° 20′ Leo | Cancer | Me |
Pada 1 (Leo, Aries navamsa, lord Mars). The Moon stands in Leo with an Aries navamsa, a double fire, so this pada is usually described as the most direct and assertive of the four: quick to lead, quick to react, and keen to be first.
Pada 2 (Leo, Taurus navamsa, lord Venus). A Taurus navamsa, the sign where the Moon is exalted, steadies the throne. Teachers describe this pada as the most settled in feeling, fond of comfort, good food, art and loyal company.
Pada 3 (Leo, Gemini navamsa, lord Mercury). Gemini’s navamsa adds curiosity and speech. This pada is read as the scholar or adviser of the court: someone who carries Magha’s dignity into writing, teaching, trade or counsel.
Pada 4 (Leo, Cancer navamsa, lord the Moon). The Cancer navamsa is the Moon’s own sign. It softens the formal surface of Magha with care, so this pada is described as the most protective of family and the most open about feeling.

Compatibility and matching
Magha is a Rakshasa gana nakshatra and its yoni is the rat. In ashtakoota the gana kuta gives the full six points when both people share a gana, and the calculator here gives a Rakshasa bride one point with a Deva groom and none with a Manushya groom, so many matchmakers look at the rest of the chart before deciding how much that matters. The word Rakshasa is a classification of temperament in the texts (strong-willed and forthright) and does not mean anything sinister.
The yoni of a rat is paired with the cat as its natural enemy, which scores zero in the table, while another rat scores four. Magha’s nadi is Antya (Kapha), and the tradition scores a shared nadi at zero of eight, though teachers differ on how firmly to apply it, and many allow exceptions when other factors are strong. Magha’s neighbour Purva Phalguni shares the same yoni, which is why the two often appear together in discussions of rat-yoni pairs.
Try the pair you have in mind in the nakshatra compatibility calculator, which lists each kuta separately so you can see where the points come from. A score describes a traditional method and does not decide how a relationship goes.
Names and the naming syllables
Under the traditional method, a child’s first sound comes from the pada of the Moon at birth. For Magha the four syllables are Ma, Mi, Mu and Me, taken in order from the first pada to the fourth. Families usually choose a name that starts with the right sound and carries a meaning they like, and many keep a second, everyday name for use at home.
The page of Magha nakshatra baby names lists names for each syllable with meanings, and the baby names by date of birth tool finds the syllable from a birth date, time and place.
Find your nakshatra
Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon was passing through at the moment of birth. The nakshatra calculator gives it, with the pada, from your birth date, time and place. The nakshatra at a date and time calculator shows where the Moon stands at any moment, which helps when you are checking a muhurta or an event.
Frequently asked questions
↳ Which sign is Magha nakshatra in?
Magha lies wholly in Leo, from 0° 00′ to 13° 20′. All four padas fall in Leo, and their navamsa signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer.
↳ Who is the lord of Magha nakshatra?
Ketu is the Vimshottari lord of Magha, so a person born in Magha begins life in a Ketu dasha with a portion of its seven years remaining. The sign lord of Leo is the Sun, so both Ketu and the Sun colour this nakshatra.
↳ What does the throne symbol mean?
Tradition reads the throne as rightful position and the responsibility of an inheritance. It is often shown empty, a seat waiting for the next person in the line.
↳ Is Magha a good or a bad nakshatra?
No nakshatra is good or bad in itself. Magha is described as dignified and fierce in the old classifications, and each chart shows how its qualities are supported or challenged by other placements.
↳ What are the baby name letters for Magha?
The syllables are Ma, Mi, Mu and Me, one for each pada. The baby names page for Magha lists names for all four with their meanings.
