Purva Phalguni is the eleventh of the 27 nakshatras and the middle third of Leo, from 13° 20′ to 26° 40′. Its name means the “former reddish one”, the first of the two Phalguni stars that sit side by side in the Lion’s hindquarters. The tradition links it with rest, delight, creative work and the pleasures that follow effort.

The deity and the story
The deity is Bhaga, one of the Adityas, the sons of Aditi. His name means a share or a portion, and in the Vedic hymns he is the god who gives each person their allotted fortune: wealth, a spouse, good company and the capacity to enjoy them. The word bhagya, good fortune, comes from the same root, and so does the title Bhagavan, the one who holds fortune in full.
Bhaga appears in the old story of Daksha’s sacrifice. In the Puranic versions of that tale the god lost his eyesight when Shiva’s attendants broke up the rite, and some tellings have him healed afterwards, which teachers read as a reminder that fortune is not always clear-sighted and that it can be restored. The symbol of the front legs of a bed, with its twin Uttara Phalguni carrying the back legs, makes the two stars together a single bedstead: Purva Phalguni is the part where one lies down to rest and to enjoy.
Venus, the planet of affection and art, rules this nakshatra in the Vimshottari system, and the whole of it sits in Leo, the Sun’s sign, so a Moon here combines a warm, generous Leo setting with Venus’s love of beauty.
Temperament in the classical texts
Classical and later descriptions of a person born under Purva Phalguni agree on the main lines. The person is sociable, affectionate, fond of music, art, clothes, food and company, and often has an easy charm. Creativity is a strong theme, whether in performance, design, hospitality or any work that gives other people pleasure.
The cautions are gentle ones. A love of comfort can slow action, a wish to be liked can lead to too much agreeing, and generosity may run ahead of means. The texts speak of devotion to family and friends, and teachers advise balancing rest with steady effort. These are tendencies of one placement in a chart, never rules about how a life turns out.
The four padas
| Pada | Span | Navamsa sign | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 13° 20′ to 16° 40′ Leo | Leo | Mo |
| 2 | 16° 40′ to 20° 00′ Leo | Virgo | Ta |
| 3 | 20° 00′ to 23° 20′ Leo | Libra | Ti |
| 4 | 23° 20′ to 26° 40′ Leo | Scorpio | Tu |
Pada 1 (Leo, Leo navamsa, lord the Sun). Leo rashi and Leo navamsa together give the most solar of the four padas. It is described as proud and warm, a natural host and performer with a clear sense of its own taste. Rashi and navamsa are the same sign, so this pada is vargottama.
Pada 2 (Leo, Virgo navamsa, lord Mercury). A Virgo navamsa, ruled by Mercury, brings care and attention to detail. This pada is read as the craftsperson of the group, putting pleasure into skilful, well-ordered work.
Pada 3 (Leo, Libra navamsa, lord Venus). A Libra navamsa is ruled by Venus, the lord of the nakshatra itself. Teachers describe it as the most gracious and diplomatic pada, with a strong feeling for partnership, harmony and beauty.
Pada 4 (Leo, Scorpio navamsa, lord Mars). Scorpio’s navamsa, ruled by Mars, deepens the feeling. This pada is described as intense and private under a sociable surface, with strong loyalties and a capacity for focus.

Compatibility and matching
Purva Phalguni is a Manushya gana nakshatra, so in the gana kuta it scores the full six with another Manushya partner and five as a bride with a Deva groom, while the table gives zero with a Rakshasa groom. Its nadi is Madhya (Pitta), and the tradition looks for different nadis between two people, so a shared Madhya nadi scores zero of eight in the standard method, although teachers vary on how strictly to apply it.
Its yoni is the rat, the same as Magha next door, which makes Magha and Purva Phalguni a same-yoni pair that scores four. The cat is the rat’s natural enemy and scores zero. Because the whole nakshatra lies in Leo, the varna and vashya kutas are the same for every pada, which makes the match simpler to read than for the nakshatras that straddle two signs.
To see how Purva Phalguni fares with another star, open the nakshatra compatibility calculator and choose both nakshatras and padas. A score describes a traditional method and does not decide how a relationship goes.
Names and the naming syllables
The four naming syllables are Mo, Ta, Ti and Tu, one for each pada. Note that the Ta, Ti and Tu here are the retroflex sounds of the Devanagari letters ट, टि and टु, which differ from the dental sounds of Vishakha even though English spelling makes them look the same. If a family uses Devanagari this is easy to see, and the baby names page shows each syllable in both scripts.
The page of Purva Phalguni nakshatra baby names lists names for each syllable with meanings, and the baby names by date of birth tool finds the syllable from a birth date, time and place.
