In shortMoola is the nineteenth nakshatra, spanning the first 13 degrees 20 minutes of Sagittarius, ruled by Ketu with Nirriti as its deity. It is known for getting to the root of things, for research and for a life that is rebuilt after loss.

Moola, also written Mula, is the nineteenth of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It fills the first 13 degrees 20 minutes of Sagittarius and sits right after Jyeshtha, so the Moon passes from the last degrees of Scorpio into Moola as it crosses from one sign to the next. The name means “the root”, and the symbol is a bunch of roots bound together, so the whole nakshatra is read as the part of life that lies underground: origins, foundations and the things that must be understood before anything above ground can change.

The deity and the story

Moola’s deity is Nirriti, a figure the Rigveda already knows. She stands for dissolution, decay and the loosening of what has been held too tightly. Vedic hymns speak of her with caution, asking that she keep away, and later tradition names her the guardian of the south-west, one of the directional protectors. In the older way of reading, she is not wickedness as such. She is the principle that ends things, and an ending is what clears the ground.

This is why Moola is described in the tradition as destructive in order to renew. A plant cannot be moved or healed without attention to its root, and sometimes the only honest remedy is to pull the weed out. Teachers connect the idea with the shakti of Moola, the power to uproot, and with the nakshatra’s place at the edge of a sign, where the Moon sits at the boundary between water and fire. That junction, the gandanta, is spoken of as a point of transition, and traditions differ on how much weight it deserves.

Families in many parts of India have a custom called Moola shanti, a calm ritual performed for a child born under this nakshatra. It is a matter of family and regional practice, not a requirement, and astrologers disagree on whether and when it is needed. This page does not recommend any paid ritual, and a Moola birth is not a cause for worry.

Temperament in the classical texts

Traditional descriptions of a person born under Moola tend to run on the same thread: a questioning mind that wants the cause and not the story, a taste for study, philosophy, medicine or investigation, and a readiness to start again when something fails. The lists commonly add independence, a frank way of speaking, and a pull towards roots, whether those are family, land, herbs or ideas.

The same lists mention the harder side in plain terms. Moola people can be blunt, restless, or slow to settle, and some lives are marked by early separations or by leaving one’s birthplace. These are tendencies that teachers describe, not outcomes. Reading a nakshatra means reading the whole chart: the sign, the lord’s placement and the planets around the Moon all change the picture.

Ketu rules the nakshatra, which adds detachment and an inward turn. The Rakshasa gana in the table above is a classification used in matching, a label for temperament in the old scheme and not a moral judgement. Many people with a Moola Moon are known as teachers, healers and researchers who simply prefer depth to display.

The four padas

Pada Span Navamsa sign Syllable
1 0° 00′ to 3° 20′ Sagittarius Aries Ye
2 3° 20′ to 6° 40′ Sagittarius Taurus Yo
3 6° 40′ to 10° 00′ Sagittarius Gemini Bha
4 10° 00′ to 13° 20′ Sagittarius Cancer Bhi

Pada 1 (Ye, navamsa Aries). The first quarter carries the Mars-ruled navamsa of Aries, and it is described as the most direct and energetic of the four. It is read as courage in questioning, and a person who acts on conclusions quickly. The risk named in the texts is impatience, so steady routines help.

Pada 2 (Yo, navamsa Taurus). Venus rules the navamsa here. Teachers describe a Moola that wants stability: practical, attached to comfort and to the land, with the digging done slowly. Interests in food, craft and finance are mentioned, and so is a stubborn streak.

Pada 3 (Bha, navamsa Gemini). Mercury’s navamsa makes this the talking and learning pada. It is linked with writing, teaching, trade and curiosity, and with a restless mind that gathers information from many roots at once. Focus is the common lesson.

Pada 4 (Bhi, navamsa Cancer). The Moon’s navamsa softens Moola. This quarter is read as the most emotional and the most caring, with strong ties to family and a protective side. Some teachers note that it blends the seeker with the nurturer, and that feelings can run deep and private.

Each planet in Moola

The site has a guide to every planet in this nakshatra. Each one reads the planet through the themes of uprooting, origins and honest endings.

Compatibility and matching

In ashtakoota matching, Moola’s Rakshasa gana scores the full six points when both partners share the gana, and it scores low against the others. The tables used by the calculator give a Rakshasa bride with a Deva groom just one point, and Manushya with Rakshasa nothing. Teachers differ on how much weight gana should carry, and many treat it only as a prompt to talk about temperament and pace.

Moola’s yoni is the dog (Shvana). The table scores the same animal highest, and the hare or deer is the one set against it as a sworn enemy, which gives zero on that kuta. It is a symbolic scheme about instinct and comfort, not a forecast about two people.

Moola belongs to the Adi (Vata) nadi. When both partners share a nadi, the nadi kuta scores nothing out of eight, and traditions have long lists of exceptions that many astrologers apply. A different nadi scores the full eight. Nakshatra matching is only one layer of a full chart comparison, and no pairing is called best or worst here.

To compare two nakshatras directly, use the nakshatra compatibility calculator. Treat its points as one input to a conversation, not a verdict on any relationship.

Names and the naming syllables

Moola’s four syllables are Ye, Yo, Bha and Bhi, one for each pada. The Moon’s pada at birth chooses the first sound of the name in the Hindu naming tradition, and the family usually picks a name that begins with that sound.

If the birth time is unknown, the pada cannot be fixed, and some families use the sound of the first pada or choose among the four.

The full list of boy and girl names for each syllable is on the Moola nakshatra baby names page, and the baby names by date of birth tool works out the pada and syllable from a birth date, time and place.

Find your nakshatra

The nakshatra depends on where the Moon stood at the moment of birth, so it needs the birth date, time and place. The nakshatra calculator gives it with the pada, and the nakshatra at a date and time calculator shows which nakshatra the Moon is in at any chosen moment. Without a birth time, the calculators still tell you whether the Moon stayed in Moola that day.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Which sign does Moola nakshatra belong to?

Moola spans 0 degrees 00 minutes to 13 degrees 20 minutes of Sagittarius, so all four padas fall in Sagittarius (Dhanu). The navamsa signs of the padas are Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer.

↳ Who is the ruling planet and deity of Moola?

Ketu is the Vimshottari lord and Nirriti, the goddess of dissolution, is the deity. A Moola Moon begins life in a Ketu dasha, whose remaining length depends on the exact degree.

↳ Is Moola nakshatra bad?

No. Old texts call Moola fierce because its theme is endings and uprooting, but the same quality is described as an asset for researchers, healers and teachers. No single nakshatra decides a life, and a doctor or counsellor is the right person for any health or family worry.

↳ What are the naming syllables for Moola?

The syllables are Ye, Yo, Bha and Bhi for padas 1 to 4. The baby names page for Moola lists names for each sound.

↳ What is gandanta and how does it relate to Moola?

Gandanta is the junction between a water sign and a fire sign. The Jyeshtha to Moola boundary is one of three such junctions in the zodiac. Teachers call it a sensitive transition point, and views differ on how much it matters in a chart.
