Purva Ashadha is the twentieth of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It occupies the middle of Sagittarius, from 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes, and it comes right after Moola. The name means “the earlier of the Ashadha pair”, with Uttara Ashadha as the later one. The two are read as companions, and where Moola digs down to the root, Purva Ashadha is the nakshatra that draws up the water and carries the argument forward.

The deity and the story
The deity is Apas, the waters, and the Rigveda gives them some of its most loved verses. The well-known hymn that begins “apo hi shtha” addresses the waters as healers and givers of life, and it is still spoken at the start of the daily sandhya prayers. Water in this tradition is purifying and nourishing, and it is also patient: it wears down stone without hurry.
Because of this, the nakshatra is called the invincible one in many modern lists. The reading is that water cannot be held back for long. It finds its course, collects force as it goes and reaches the sea. The symbol of the winnowing fan points to the other half of the picture, which is the separation of grain from chaff. Purva Ashadha is described as a mansion of sifting and of clear conviction.
Some accounts say the nakshatra is also tied to the river goddesses, who are the waters made personal. Where an account is a later popular gloss and not found in the older hymns, treat it as such.
Temperament in the classical texts
Descriptions of a person born in Purva Ashadha usually speak first of confidence. The lists mention a persuasive manner, a love of debate, pride in one’s word and a strong sense of what is fair. A person of this nakshatra is said to rally others around an idea, and often to be loyal to friends and to a cause for a long time.
The same traditions are frank about the other side. Pride can harden into stubbornness, and a talent for argument can turn into the need to win every argument. Venus, the ruler, adds a refined taste, a liking for comfort and company and, in many accounts, a gift for the arts and for diplomacy. The Manushya gana in the table is a label for a middle, human temperament in the old scheme.
All of this is read through the whole chart. The sign, the lord’s placement and the other planets with the Moon matter far more than a single list of qualities, and none of it is a promise or a warning.
The four padas
| Pada | Span | Navamsa sign | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 13° 20′ to 16° 40′ Sagittarius | Leo | Bhu |
| 2 | 16° 40′ to 20° 00′ Sagittarius | Virgo | Dha |
| 3 | 20° 00′ to 23° 20′ Sagittarius | Libra | Pha |
| 4 | 23° 20′ to 26° 40′ Sagittarius | Scorpio | Dha |
Pada 1 (Bhu, navamsa Leo). The Sun’s navamsa gives this pada the most visible authority of the four. It is read as leadership, warmth and a strong wish for recognition. The usual advice is to let others share the credit.
Pada 2 (Dha, navamsa Virgo). Mercury’s navamsa of Virgo makes the second pada careful and analytical. The texts mention a love of detail, service and practical learning. This is the water that is filtered before it is drunk.
Pada 3 (Pha, navamsa Libra). Venus rules the navamsa. The third pada is the most social and artistic, drawn to partnership, balance and beauty. The difficulty described is indecision when two good options compete.
Pada 4 (Dha, navamsa Scorpio). Mars rules Scorpio navamsa, which gives the last quarter depth, intensity and a private, determined streak. The sound is the retroflex Dha, and names beginning with it are very rare, so families often choose a close sound.

Compatibility and matching
Purva Ashadha is in the Manushya gana, which scores six points with another Manushya, five or six with Deva depending on which partner is which, and nothing with Rakshasa, in the tables the calculator uses. Teachers give gana different weight, and some treat it only as a guide to temperament.
The yoni is the monkey (Vanara). Same animal scores highest, and the goat (Mesha) is the one listed as a sworn enemy, giving zero on that kuta. Yoni is a symbolic scheme, read as a note about instinct, play and comfort between two people.
Purva Ashadha is in the Madhya (Pitta) nadi. Two people with the same nadi score nothing out of eight on the nadi kuta, and many astrologers apply the traditional exceptions. A different nadi scores the full eight. This is one factor among many in a full chart comparison, and no match is called best or worst on this page.
To compare two nakshatras directly, use the nakshatra compatibility calculator. Treat its points as one input to a conversation, not a verdict on any relationship.
Names and the naming syllables
The four syllables are Bhu, Dha, Pha and Dha. The second and fourth are different letters that sound alike in English: the second is the dental Dha and the fourth is the retroflex Dha, and names beginning with the retroflex sound are very rare.
A family often uses the sound of the Moon’s pada at birth as the first sound of the name, and if the birth time is not known they may choose among the four.
The full list of boy and girl names for each syllable is on the Purva Ashadha nakshatra baby names page, and the baby names by date of birth tool works out the pada and syllable from a birth date, time and place.
Find your nakshatra
The nakshatra depends on where the Moon stood at the moment of birth, so it needs the birth date, time and place. The nakshatra calculator gives it with the pada, and the nakshatra at a date and time calculator shows which nakshatra the Moon is in at any chosen moment. If the birth time is uncertain, the tool will show whether the Moon stayed in Purva Ashadha all day.
