Purva Ashadha is the twentieth of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It spans 13° 20′ to 26° 40′ Sagittarius, is ruled by Venus and is presided over by Apas, the cosmic waters. Its symbols are a winnowing fan and an elephant’s tusk, and the name means “the earlier unvanquished one”.
In the Avakahada chakra, the Hindu naming chart, the first sound of a baby’s name depends on which quarter of Purva Ashadha held the Moon at birth. Purva Ashadha has four padas, with the syllables Bhu, Dha, Pha and Dha. Not yet sure of the pada? The free nakshatra calculator works out the pada and syllable from when and where the baby was born.

Names starting with Dha (ढ) (ढा)
No established girls’ names begin with the retroflex Dha either. Families usually choose the nearest sound, which is Dha (ध) or Da, and pick a name from those lists.
Choosing the name
Begin with your family’s own custom. Some families follow the first-letter chart strictly, some go by the rashi letter (Purva Ashadha is entirely in Dhanu, so the Moon sign letter is the same for all four padas), and others choose by meaning alone. Each is a valid path.
The Bhu and Dha (ध) padas have plenty of well-loved names, many of them tied to the earth, wealth and dharma. Pada 3 has fewer, and pada 4 has none worth listing. If your baby is in pada 4, there is no shame in using the nearest sound, and a lovely name from the Dha (ध) or Da list loses nothing for it. Explain the choice to relatives gently if they ask, and let the meaning carry the name.
For families abroad, think about spelling. Pha is often written Fa (Falgun, Falguni), and English speakers will say it with an F, which is a small difference. Dh is a breathy sound that often becomes D, so Dhanush and Dhaval may be said as Danush and Daval. Decide whether you want to teach people the correct sound or choose a spelling that survives travel.
Whatever the letter, meaning matters most. A name your child can carry with pride will outlast any chart.
About Purva Ashadha
Purva Ashadha means “the earlier unvanquished one”. It is symbolised by a winnowing fan, the tool that separates grain from husk, and by an elephant’s tusk. Its deity is Apas, the waters, and its ruler is Venus. People with a Purva Ashadha Moon are often described as spirited, persuasive and hard to discourage, with a taste for purifying and renewing what they touch. These are traditional tendencies for reflection and not a prediction about any individual child. For a full reading, see Moon in Purva Ashadha nakshatra.

↳ Which letter for Purva Ashadha nakshatra pada 2?
