Shravana is the twenty-second of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It spans 10° 00′ to 23° 20′ Capricorn, is ruled by the Moon and is presided over by Vishnu. Its symbols are an ear and three footprints, and the name means “hearing”.
The Avakahada chakra, a chart used in Hindu naming tradition, bases the baby’s first sound on the quarter of Shravana that the Moon occupied at birth. Shravana has four padas, with the syllables Ju, Je, Jo and Gha. Anyone who does not yet know the pada can get it, with the syllable, from the free nakshatra calculator using the date, time and place of birth.
The four syllables of Shravana
| Pada | Syllable | Devanagari | Moon sign | Span |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ju | जू | Makara (Capricorn) | 10° 00′ to 13° 20′ Capricorn |
| 2 | Je | जे | Makara (Capricorn) | 13° 20′ to 16° 40′ Capricorn |
| 3 | Jo | जो | Makara (Capricorn) | 16° 40′ to 20° 00′ Capricorn |
| 4 | Gha | घा | Makara (Capricorn) | 20° 00′ to 23° 20′ Capricorn |
Note: This site follows the 27-nakshatra table (Ju, Je, Jo, Gha). Tables that count Abhijit as a 28th nakshatra give Shravana Khi, Khu, Khe and Kho instead, so your family’s chart may differ from the one above.

Choosing the name
Family custom comes first. Some households follow the first-letter chart strictly, some use the rashi letter (Shravana is entirely in Makara, so the Moon sign letter is the same for all four padas), and others choose by meaning alone. All of these are fine.
Shravana is a star of few names. Ju gives a handful, Gha one or two, and Je and Jo very little. That is the truth of the language, not a mistake in the chart, and it is why many families go to the nearest sound. For pada 2 or 3, Jai or Jay is the usual neighbour, and for pada 4 a Ga name is the nearest.
It is also worth remembering that your family’s chart may be a different table. Some traditions count Abhijit as a 28th star and give Shravana the syllables Khi, Khu, Khe and Kho. If your family follows that chart, ask an elder or priest which one to use before choosing.
For families abroad, Juhi and Jui are simple to say, and Jugal and Ghanshyam are easy to read but carry a clear Indian identity. Ghanshyam is long, so decide which short form your child will use. Whatever you choose, the meaning of the name is the lasting gift.
About Shravana
Shravana means “hearing” or “the one who listens”. Its symbol is an ear, and some traditions add the three footprints of Vishnu, who is its deity. The ruler is the Moon, and the whole nakshatra lies in Capricorn. People with a Shravana Moon are traditionally described as attentive, learned and good at taking in what others say before they respond, with a respect for teachers and tradition. These are tendencies for reflection and not a prediction for any one child. To read more, see Moon in Shravana nakshatra.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What are the letters for Shravana nakshatra?
The four syllables of Shravana are Ju, Je, Jo and Gha, one for each pada. Each of the four padas of Shravana has its own sound, and the Moon's pada at birth selects it.
↳ Which letter for Shravana nakshatra pada 4?
Pada 4 of Shravana gives the syllable Gha (घा), so the name begins with Gha, as in Ghanshyam. The Moon is in Makara (Capricorn) from 20° 00′ to 23° 20′ for this pada.
↳ Why do some lists give Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho for Shravana?
Some tables count Abhijit as a 28th nakshatra, which shifts the syllables. This site uses the 27-nakshatra table, which gives Ju, Je, Jo and Gha.
↳ Can I choose a name outside these letters?
Yes. The first-letter rule is a tradition, not a requirement. Choosing by meaning or by family custom is common, and a well-loved name matters more than matching a Shravana syllable.
