Purva Bhadrapada is the twenty-fifth of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It begins at 20 degrees of Aquarius and ends at 3 degrees 20 minutes of Pisces, so it crosses the border between the two signs. Its name means “the earlier of the auspicious feet”, with Uttara Bhadrapada as the later one, and the pair are the two front and back legs of a bed in the old imagery. The nakshatra is read as intense, idealistic and concerned with the large questions of life and death.

The deity and the story
The deity is Aja Ekapada, whose name means “the unborn one-footed” and who is a Vedic god of storm and fire. The Rigveda invokes him together with Ahir Budhnya, and later lists count him among the eleven Rudras. He is sometimes described as a form of the Sun, and sometimes as a fiery power of the sky that holds up the heavens on its single foot.
The one foot is the key of the image. A single point of support means balance and concentrated energy: a power that holds up a great weight on one pillar. It is also tied to the tapas of the ascetic, who gathers heat and focus by giving up other things.
The symbol of the front legs of a funeral cot, and the two-faced man given in other lists, belong to the older reading of this mansion as one of endings and transition. In this tradition, death is a change of state, and fire is the force that carries a person across. It is a serious idea, and it does not mean the nakshatra brings misfortune.
Temperament in the classical texts
Traditional descriptions of a person born in Purva Bhadrapada speak of intensity. The lists mention strong convictions, a philosophical or reformist turn of mind, a fierce honesty, and the capacity to hold two sides of a question. The person is described as eager to change the world, with a taste for the occult, for fire rituals and for unconventional paths.
The lists are frank about the shadow side: anxiety, a tendency to extremes, a dry or sarcastic tongue, and a streak of restlessness. Jupiter rules the nakshatra and calms this by adding wisdom and a wish to teach. The Manushya gana is a label for a middle, human temperament in the old scheme.
These are tendencies that teachers describe, not forecasts. The sign, Jupiter’s placement and the other planets with the Moon decide how they appear.
The four padas
| Pada | Span | Navamsa sign | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20° 00′ to 23° 20′ Aquarius | Aries | Se |
| 2 | 23° 20′ to 26° 40′ Aquarius | Taurus | So |
| 3 | 26° 40′ to 30° 00′ Aquarius | Gemini | Da |
| 4 | 0° 00′ to 3° 20′ Pisces | Cancer | Di |
Pada 1 (Se, navamsa Aries). Mars’s navamsa makes the first pada the most fiery and forceful. It is read as courageous, outspoken and driven to reform, with the caution of a short temper.
Pada 2 (So, navamsa Taurus). Venus rules the navamsa and steadies the second pada. It is linked with a love of comfort, of music and of resources, and with a stubborn loyalty to principle.
Pada 3 (Da, navamsa Gemini). Mercury’s navamsa gives the third pada a quick and argumentative mind. Teachers connect it with writing, debate and teaching, and with a gift for putting an idea clearly.
Pada 4 (Di, navamsa Cancer). The only pada in Pisces, with the Moon’s navamsa of Cancer. It is read as the most sensitive and compassionate, with a deep emotional life and an interest in the spiritual.

Compatibility and matching
Purva Bhadrapada is in the Manushya gana. In the tables the calculator uses, a Manushya partner scores six points with another Manushya, five or six with Deva depending on which partner is which, and nothing with Rakshasa. Teachers weigh gana differently, and some treat it only as a comparison of temperament.
The yoni is the lion (Simha). The same animal scores highest, and the elephant (Gaja) is the one listed as the sworn enemy, giving zero on that kuta. Yoni is a symbolic scheme about instinct and comfort.
Purva Bhadrapada is in the Adi (Vata) nadi. Two people with the same nadi score nothing out of eight on the nadi kuta, and many astrologers apply the traditional exceptions. A different nadi scores the full eight. Nakshatra points are only one layer of a full chart comparison, and no pairing is called best or worst here.
To compare two nakshatras directly, use the nakshatra compatibility calculator. Treat its points as one input to a conversation, not a verdict on any relationship.
Names and the naming syllables
The four syllables are Se, So, Da and Di. The first three are in Aquarius and the last is in Pisces, so a child born in the last pada has a different Moon sign.
The pada at birth gives the first sound of the name, and where the time is not known families sometimes choose among the four.
The full list of boy and girl names for each syllable is on the Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra baby names page, and the baby names by date of birth tool works out the pada and syllable from a birth date, time and place.
Find your nakshatra
The nakshatra depends on where the Moon stood at the moment of birth, so it needs the birth date, time and place. The nakshatra calculator gives it with the pada, and the nakshatra at a date and time calculator shows which nakshatra the Moon is in at any chosen moment. Because the nakshatra crosses a sign border, check the Moon sign as well as the pada on the result.
