In shortBharani is the second nakshatra, spanning 13° 20′ to 26° 40′ Aries, with Venus as its lord and Yama, the lord of dharma and death, as its deity. It is known for endurance, responsibility and the bearing of heavy loads.

Bharani is the second of the 27 nakshatras and lies in the middle of Aries, from 13° 20′ to 26° 40′ of the sidereal sign. Its name means the bearer, from the root bhri, to carry, and the star is associated with bearing, with carrying a burden through to its end, and with the passage between birth and death. It sits between Ashwini, the start, and Krittika, the first fire.

The deity and the story

Bharani’s deity is Yama, the first mortal to die and the god who rules the world of the departed. In the tradition Yama is not a villain. He is Dharmaraja, the king of dharma, and his role is to weigh each life honestly. The Rigveda treats him as a king in the realm of the ancestors, and the later tradition makes him the son of the Sun, so the twins of Ashwini and the lord of Bharani share a divine father.

Two well-known stories show Yama’s character. In the Katha Upanishad the boy Nachiketa goes to Yama’s house, waits three days unfed, and is offered three boons. He uses the last to ask what happens after death, and Yama, after testing him, teaches him about the self. In the Mahabharata’s Vana Parva, Savitri follows Yama as he takes her husband Satyavan, and her wisdom and persistence persuade him to grant boons that return Satyavan to life. Both stories present Yama as stern and fair, a teacher as much as a judge.

Temperament in the classical texts

The classical descriptions of a Bharani Moon speak of a person who keeps to their word, bears hardship without complaint and is capable of sustained effort. The texts also mention a strong sense of right and wrong and a fondness for comfort and pleasure, which fits the Venus lordship. The star’s association with Yama adds a serious streak, and many accounts describe a person who thinks about duty, limits and consequences from an early age.

The cautions in the traditional lists are mostly about intensity: strong feeling that is kept inside, a tendency to carry too much, and sometimes stubbornness. These are common-sense tendencies, and everyone has some of them. A steady routine, honest conversation and rest are what teachers usually suggest for a heavy-carrying Moon, and the rest of the chart always modifies the picture.

The four padas

Pada Span Navamsa sign Syllable
1 13° 20′ to 16° 40′ Aries Leo (Simha) Li
2 16° 40′ to 20° 00′ Aries Virgo (Kanya) Lu
3 20° 00′ to 23° 20′ Aries Libra (Tula) Le
4 23° 20′ to 26° 40′ Aries Scorpio (Vrishchika) Lo

Pada 1 (Li) falls in Leo navamsa, ruled by the Sun. It is read as the proud and dignified pada, with a wish for recognition and a generous, theatrical streak.

Pada 2 (Lu) falls in Virgo navamsa. The reading is careful and practical, with attention to detail and a talent for service and analysis.

Pada 3 (Le) falls in Libra navamsa, ruled by Venus like the nakshatra itself. Tradition describes it as the most sociable and artistic pada, with an interest in fairness, partnership and beauty.

Pada 4 (Lo) falls in Scorpio navamsa. It is the most intense pada, associated with depth, privacy, research and a capacity to endure a difficult stretch.

The navamsa sign of each pada is worked out the standard way: the 108 padas of the zodiac run in order from Aries, so each pada falls in the next sign in turn. You can see the same placement for any chart in the navamsa calculator.

Each planet in Bharani

When a planet sits in Bharani, its nature is shaped by the lord Venus and by the deity above. Each of these pages looks at one planet in this star.

Compatibility and matching

Bharani has a Manushya gana, the group tradition describes as the balanced human type. In the site’s tables a Manushya Moon scores well on gana with Deva or Manushya partners and poorly with a Rakshasa partner. Its yoni is the elephant, and the traditional sworn enemy of the elephant is the lion, the yoni of Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada. Bharani’s nadi is Madhya (Pitta), shared with Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Dhanishta in the six-fold repeating pattern the tool uses. Two people with the same nadi score zero on that kuta, which is the point where tradition suggests extra care and, often, a closer look at the full charts.

Try it with two real nakshatras in the nakshatra compatibility calculator, which shows every kuta and the total out of 36. A score is one lens on a relationship, not a verdict on it.

Names and the naming syllables

The four naming syllables of Bharani are Li, Lu, Le and Lo. The syllable is chosen by the pada the Moon held at birth, so the exact birth time decides it. These sounds come from the traditional avakahada table and are offered as a starting letter, not a requirement. Many families use them as the first sound of the name and then choose a meaning they love.

The page of Bharani baby names lists names for all four sounds. If you only know the date and place of birth, the baby names by date of birth tool finds the pada for you.

Find your nakshatra

If the Moon was between 13° 20′ and 26° 40′ of sidereal Aries at birth, your nakshatra is Bharani. The Moon takes a little under a day to cross a nakshatra, and the pada changes in about six hours, so the time of birth matters. The nakshatra calculator works out both the nakshatra and the pada from the date, time and place.

To check any other moment, the nakshatra at date and time calculator shows where the Moon stood and when it changes star.
