In shortArdra is the sixth nakshatra, spanning 6° 40′ to 20° 00′ Gemini, with Rahu as its lord and Rudra, the storm god, as its deity. It is known for intensity, intellect and renewal after a storm.

Ardra is the sixth of the 27 nakshatras and lies wholly in Gemini, from 6° 40′ to 20° 00′ of the sidereal sign. The name means moist or fresh, as the earth is after rain, and the star is pictured as a teardrop. In the sky it is marked by Betelgeuse, the bright red shoulder of Orion. The tradition links it with storms and with the clearing that follows them.

The gana, yoni and nadi are the groups used in nakshatra matching, explained below. The varna comes from the Moon’s sign, which is Gemini for every pada of Ardra.

The deity and the story

The deity of Ardra is Rudra, the storm god of the Rigveda, a fierce and also healing figure who is invoked both to be kept away and to be gracious. Later tradition identifies Rudra with Shiva, and the Shatarudriya hymn, also called Sri Rudram, belongs to this line. Rahu, the nakshatra’s lord, is the north node of the Moon, a point of hunger and restless drive, and together they give Ardra its tradition of storm and change.

In South India the star is honoured in the month of Margashirsha as Tiruvathirai or Arudra Darshan, when the dance of Shiva as Nataraja is celebrated, especially at Chidambaram. The sky-stories also set Ardra beside Mrigashira: the deer, the hunter and the arrow belong to the stars of Orion in the tradition, and Rudra the hunter is the god of Ardra. These accounts are sacred narrative, and their details differ between regions.

Temperament in the classical texts

The classical lists describe an Ardra Moon as intelligent, sharp-minded, quick to learn, direct in speech and able to work through trouble. The texts speak of strong feeling under a composed surface, a capacity for research and a liking for facts. The tradition also credits the star with the ability to rebuild after upheaval.

The traditional cautions are about storms of feeling: a temper that flares, a habit of doubt, and sharp words that are regretted later. Teachers describe these as the weather of a deeply felt mind, not as a fixed fate. Physical exercise, quiet time outdoors and trusted friends are common-sense suggestions. As always, the Moon’s sign, the other planets and the whole chart decide how this shows.

The four padas

Pada Span Navamsa sign Syllable
1 6° 40′ to 10° 00′ Gemini Sagittarius (Dhanu) Ku
2 10° 00′ to 13° 20′ Gemini Capricorn (Makara) Gha
3 13° 20′ to 16° 40′ Gemini Aquarius (Kumbha) Nga
4 16° 40′ to 20° 00′ Gemini Pisces (Meena) Chha

Pada 1 (Ku) falls in Sagittarius navamsa, ruled by Jupiter. It is read as the most hopeful and philosophical pada, in which the storm turns into a search for meaning.

Pada 2 (Gha) falls in Capricorn navamsa. Tradition describes a disciplined, ambitious pada with a serious attitude to work and a long view.

Pada 3 (Nga) falls in Aquarius navamsa. It is read as the most unconventional pada, with an interest in systems, science and groups. The syllable Nga almost never begins a name, so families usually use the nearest sound, Ga or Na, and say so openly.

Pada 4 (Chha) falls in Pisces navamsa, ruled by Jupiter. The reading is compassionate and imaginative, with a gift for feeling what others feel.

The navamsa sign of each pada is worked out the standard way: the 108 padas of the zodiac run in order from Aries, so each pada falls in the next sign in turn. You can see the same placement for any chart in the navamsa calculator.

When a planet sits in Ardra, its nature is shaped by the lord Rahu and by the deity above. Each of these pages looks at one planet in this star.

Compatibility and matching

Ardra has a Manushya gana. In the site’s tables a Manushya Moon scores well with Deva and Manushya partners and poorly with a Rakshasa partner. Its yoni is the dog, shared with Mula, and the traditional sworn enemy of the dog is the deer, the yoni of Anuradha and Jyeshtha. Ardra’s nadi is Adi (Vata), which it shares with Ashwini, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. If both people share a nadi, the kuta scores zero, and tradition then recommends a fuller reading of the charts, because the texts list several exceptions. Ardra lies wholly in Gemini, so every pada gives the same Moon sign in matching.

Try it with two real nakshatras in the nakshatra compatibility calculator, which shows every kuta and the total out of 36. A score is one lens on a relationship, not a verdict on it.

Names and the naming syllables

The four naming syllables of Ardra are Ku, Gha, Nga and Chha. The third is a nasal sound that almost never starts a name, so many families use Ga or Na in its place. The syllable is chosen by the pada the Moon held at birth, and the sounds come from the traditional avakahada table. They are a custom for choosing a starting sound.

The page of Ardra baby names lists names for all four sounds. If you only know the date and place of birth, the baby names by date of birth tool finds the pada for you.
