About this piece
Bhasma, also called vibhuti, is sacred ash. It is closely associated with Lord Shiva and is applied as tripundra, three horizontal lines, on the forehead and on images of Shiva.
This one comes in a 100 g jar with a screw lid, and the seller says it is prepared from Navagraha sticks, the nine woods traditionally used in planetary fire rituals. The photo shows a fine grey powder beside the jar. It suits a home altar or anyone who wants vibhuti on hand for puja.
How it is used
Vibhuti is traditionally applied on the forehead as three lines, and the seller says the Mrityunjaya mantra is chanted while applying it. Many homes keep a small container at the altar.
Looking after it
- Keep the lid closed and the jar dry.
