When a planet looks at a house or another planet, the look carries the nature of the one looking. This is why a first question about any aspect is: who is looking? Vedic astrology sorts planets into benefics and malefics, and the aspects they cast into shubha drishti (auspicious sight) and papa drishti (pressing sight). The sorting is useful and easy to misuse, so this page explains both what it says and what it leaves out.
The natural nature of the planets
Each planet has a natural character, called its naisargika nature.
| Group | Planets | Quality of the look |
|---|---|---|
| Natural benefics | Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon, Mercury when unafflicted | Supporting, softening, widening |
| Natural malefics | Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, a waning Moon | Heating, restraining, testing, intensifying |
Jupiter is the greatest benefic and Saturn and Mars the strongest malefics in the usual ranking. The Moon moves between groups with its phase, so the same Moon is gentler when bright. Mercury takes the colour of the planets it keeps company with. Natural nature is the starting point and not the end of the reading.
Functional nature
The second layer comes from the houses a planet rules for a given ascendant. Teachers describe the lords of the trikona houses (1st, 5th, 9th) as the most favourable, the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th as tending to a more difficult tone, and the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th as carrying the challenges of those houses. The lords of the kendras (4th, 7th, 10th) are read in a special way that differs from book to book. The result is that the same planet reads differently for different ascendants. A natural malefic that rules a trikona can be a friend to the chart, and a natural benefic that rules the 6th or 8th can be a mixed one. The house lord tables show lordship for each placement.
What each kind of look is read as doing
- A benefic look on a house is read as supporting its matters and its lord. Jupiter’s sight is the clearest case: see Jupiter’s 5th, 7th and 9th aspects.
- A benefic look on a planet steadies and warms it, and helps a planet that sits in a hard place.
- A malefic look on a house is read as pressure, effort or delay in its matters. The look of Saturn is the clearest case: see Saturn’s 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects.
- A malefic look on a planet tests it, and can sharpen it. A malefic look on a malefic is read as intensifying, and a malefic look on a benefic as straining it.
Mars is a natural malefic whose look is better described as energetic and direct, as set out in Mars’s 4th, 7th and 8th aspects.
Why a malefic look is not a verdict
The words papa and malefic sound alarming, and they are not meant to be. They describe a manner of working: a malefic acts with pressure and demand, and pressure is how skill, discipline and resilience are built. Many teachers value the planets Saturn and Mars in particular for the long-term strength they give, and the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses are said to do well with malefic influence. A malefic look on the 10th, for instance, is often read as supporting steady work. A benefic look is also not an automatic gift: an enlarged excess is still an excess.
So the right reading is of a tendency: a benefic look makes a matter easier to approach, and a malefic look makes it demand more effort. Neither fixes an outcome.
A balance of looks
A house or planet usually receives several looks, and the combined picture is read.
- Several benefic looks with no pressure give a house a well-supported tone.
- Mixed looks are the commonest case, and teachers then ask which kind of look is stronger by dignity, closeness and fraction. The fractions are in full and partial aspects.
- Planets on both sides. A related idea is not about aspect but about neighbours: a house or planet hemmed between malefics or benefics in the signs on each side, read in the yogas called Papa Kartari and Shubh Kartari.
Modifiers to remember
- Combustion and retrograde motion change how well a planet delivers its look. A planet close to the Sun is combust, as the conjunction library explains, and its look is read as weaker by many teachers.
- Dignity of the looking planet counts, as does that of the planet looked at.
- The friendship table adds a note: a look from a friend reads more comfortably than one from an enemy.
- The dashas decide when a look speaks. A look from the planet of a running dasha is the most active, as in mahadasha and antardasha explained.
Checking it in your chart
- List which planets aspect a given house or planet, using the planet position calculator and the 7th aspect of every planet.
- Mark each as natural benefic or malefic, then as friendly or hard by lordship for your ascendant.
- Weigh the looks by dignity and closeness.
- Read the result as a tendency, then follow the order in how to read aspects in a chart.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is papa drishti?
It is the look of a natural malefic such as the Sun, Mars, Saturn or the nodes. It is read as pressing or testing the matter it falls on, and it can build strength and discipline.
↳ Is a benefic aspect always good?
It is read as supportive, but dignity and lordship matter. A weak benefic gives less, and enlarging something that is already excessive is not help.
↳ Can a malefic aspect be good?
Yes. A malefic that rules a favourable house, or that looks at the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th houses, is often read as giving effort-based results that last.
↳ Does the Moon aspect as a benefic or a malefic?
It depends on its phase. A bright, waxing Moon is read as a benefic and a dark, waning Moon as a weaker or malefic one.
