In shortShubh Kartari Yoga forms when natural benefics occupy both the house before and the house after a given house or planet, usually the ascendant (the 12th and 2nd houses), with no malefic in either flanking house. It is read as protection and support around whatever is hemmed in, and it is strongest when the benefics are dignified and the flanked point is otherwise healthy.

The Sanskrit word kartari means scissors or shears. Astrologers use it for a picture everyone can grasp: a house or a planet with a planet on each side, like a point held between the two blades. If the blades are benefic planets, the classical tradition calls the arrangement Shubh Kartari, the auspicious scissors, and reads it as protection. If the blades are malefic, it becomes Papa Kartari, discussed in its own article.

People come to this yoga usually from one of two directions. Some have a chart-reading report that says “Shubh Kartari on the lagna” and want to know if it matters. Others are comparing charts and notice Jupiter and Venus sitting either side of their rising sign. The answer to both is the same: it is a real, classically recognised supportive combination, but it is a modest one, it depends on details, and it is easy to overstate.

How Shubh Kartari Yoga forms

The basic rule is about neighbours. Take any house, or any planet. Look at the house immediately before it (the 12th from it) and the house immediately after it (the 2nd from it). If a natural benefic sits in each of those two houses, and no malefic sits in either, the point in the middle is said to be in Shubh Kartari.

The most common application is to the ascendant (lagna), which means benefics in the 12th house and the 2nd house of the chart. The same idea is also applied to the Moon, to the Sun, to individual houses such as the 7th or 10th, and to other planets.

In this tradition the natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, a well-associated Mercury (Mercury is benefic when it is alone or with other benefics and turns malefic in bad company), and a bright, waxing Moon. The natural malefics are Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu, with the Sun counted as a mild one. The free kundali tool’s older yoga check counts Jupiter, Venus and Mercury as the benefics for this yoga and Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as the malefics, leaving the Moon and Sun out of the test, because the Moon’s nature depends on its phase. That is a reasonable simplification, but it is a simplification, and you will find other books that include the waxing Moon.

As a checklist for the ascendant:

  • Identify the ascendant sign, then the sign before it (12th house) and the sign after it (2nd house).
  • Is there at least one natural benefic in the 12th house?
  • Is there at least one natural benefic in the 2nd house?
  • Is there no malefic in either of those two houses?

If the four answers are yes, Shubh Kartari Yoga is present on the ascendant.

The name, put simply: shubha means auspicious or benefic, kartari means scissors. Together they mean benefic scissors, or benefic flanking.

A worked example

Take a Libra ascendant. The 12th house is Virgo and the 2nd house is Scorpio. Suppose Mercury is in Virgo and Jupiter is in Scorpio, with nothing else in either sign. Both flanking houses hold a benefic and neither holds a malefic, so the ascendant is hemmed in by benefics. The yoga is present.

Now notice the complication this example already contains. For a Libra ascendant, Jupiter rules the 3rd and 6th houses, which classical practice treats as difficult houses, and Mercury rules the 9th and 12th. Jupiter is a natural benefic but, for this particular ascendant, a functional malefic in some respects. A careful astrologer would say the yoga is present by rule but somewhat mixed in quality. A chart reader who only looks at natural benefics would call it fully auspicious. The gap between the two readings is most of the skill.

What the classical texts say

The idea of judging a house by the planets on either side of it is part of the classical tradition of reading bhavas, and Kartari appears by name in that tradition. I can say confidently that the concept is an old one and that the benefic and malefic versions are both recognised. I cannot point to a chapter and verse that I am sure of, and I would rather say so than invent one. If you want the exact wording, look for the discussion of Kartari in the house-analysis sections of a good translation of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or in the later compendia, and compare more than one.

What is reliable is the logic. The 2nd and 12th are the houses of resources and of expenditure or withdrawal, so benefics there bracket a point with gain on one side and gentle release on the other. The tradition reads this as protection, and the texts and later commentators associate it with a person who is well supported, pleasant in manner, and shielded from the worst of a difficulty.

There are also disagreements worth knowing about.

  • Conjunction versus aspect. Some teachers require the benefics to be physically in the flanking houses. Others also count a benefic aspecting those houses, which loosens the rule considerably. The narrow reading is the safer one.
  • The Moon. Some count the waxing Moon as a benefic blade; others, like the tool here, leave it out.
  • Rahu and Ketu. Many astrologers count them among the malefics that spoil the yoga. Some give them no role at all.
  • Whole-sign or bhava houses. The usual modern practice, including on this site, is to count by whole signs. Teachers who use degree-based house divisions may see different results for planets near a border.

What it gives in a life

Everything here is a tendency, not a guarantee, and the yoga is best thought of as a background support rather than a headline event.

Character. When applied to the ascendant, Shubh Kartari tends to colour the personality with courtesy and approachability. The person is often likeable, tactful, and seen by others as safe to confide in. There is often a feeling of being looked after, even when the person cannot say by whom.

Health and resilience. The ascendant stands for the body and vitality. Benefics on either side suggest general resilience and a good recovery pattern. This is symbolism, not a health claim, and anything medical belongs with a doctor.

Work and money. Benefics in the 2nd (wealth, speech, family resources) and 12th (expenses, foreign lands, rest) give a balanced picture: income that is reasonable, spending that is usually not reckless, and the ability to use resources well. It does not by itself produce wealth. For that, read the lords of the wealth houses as described in the Dhana Yoga guide.

Relationships. The person tends to be met with goodwill. Friends and family often rally in difficulty. If the flanking planets are Venus and Jupiter, there is a particular warmth around love and learning.

Other houses. When the same pattern forms around another house, the protection applies to that house’s themes. Benefics around the 7th soften marriage and partnership. Benefics around the 10th support a steady reputation. Benefics around the 4th support home and peace of mind. The free kundali tool tests the ascendant pattern only, so these other versions you check by hand.

When it is strong and when it is weak

Dignity of the flanking planets. Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer, or Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces, guarding the ascendant is a far stronger picture than a debilitated or combust planet in the same place. A debilitated Venus in Virgo is technically a benefic in the right house but hardly a strong guard.

Functional nature for this ascendant. As the worked example shows, a planet that is a natural benefic may rule difficult houses for your ascendant. The yoga is most clearly good when the flanking planets are also benefic for the ascendant, meaning they rule trikonas or are otherwise friendly to it.

Two benefics versus several. One benefic on each side is enough for the rule. More benefics, or both a benefic and a second friendly planet, add weight.

What is in the middle. A healthy, strong ascendant lord and a well-placed ascendant make the protection real. A heavily afflicted ascendant, for instance with Saturn and Rahu aspecting it, is being protected from the sides but pressed from elsewhere.

Aspects to the flanking houses. A malefic aspecting the 2nd or 12th house does not cancel the yoga by the narrow rule, but it dilutes the feeling of ease it is supposed to bring.

Navamsa. Check whether the same planets are dignified or at least comfortable in the navamsa. A promise in the birth chart that the navamsa contradicts is a weaker promise.

When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)

A malefic sneaks in. The rule needs benefics on both sides and no malefic on either side. A benefic in the 12th house and Saturn in the 2nd gives a mixed flanking, not Shubh Kartari. The pure result is not formed and the chart is better read as a combination of two separate influences.

Only one side has a benefic. One benefic beside the ascendant is a good placement, but it is not Kartari. It has its own name and meaning, and is often a lesser version. Benefics in the 12th alone, or the 2nd alone, are simply placements.

Confusing it with other yogas. Benefics in the kendras from the ascendant, which the site’s newer engine flags as a separate supportive pattern, are a different condition. So is the Moon having planets on both sides, which is Durudhara Yoga. These can all appear in one chart, but they are not the same thing.

Treating it as a shield against everything. Online articles sometimes present Shubh Kartari as cancelling dashas, transits or a hard house placement. The classical picture is gentler. It softens, it does not erase.

Applying it to the wrong point. A report that says “Shubh Kartari” without naming what is flanked is incomplete. Benefics around the Moon, around the ascendant and around the 10th house describe different things. Always ask, flanking what.

Ignoring combustion. Mercury and Venus can never be far from the Sun. A Mercury or Venus in the 12th house is often combust, and a combust planet, although still classed as benefic, contributes less.

Timing: when it activates

Like other yogas, Shubh Kartari shows itself in dashas.

  • The mahadasha and antardasha of the flanking planets are when the protective quality is most visible. If Jupiter sits in the 2nd and Venus in the 12th, Jupiter and Venus periods tend to feel supported.
  • The ascendant lord’s period brings the flanked point into focus, so the yoga reads more clearly there.
  • Transits. Jupiter transiting over the ascendant or its flanking signs often feels supportive, in line with the yoga’s theme. Saturn passing over the flanking houses or the ascendant is a separate topic, and is worth reading alongside the yoga rather than assuming the yoga cancels it.

To understand how the periods are calculated, see the guide to mahadasha and antardasha.

How it differs from similar yogas

Papa Kartari Yoga. The mirror image, with malefics on both sides. See Papa Kartari Yoga. The same rule, the opposite quality.

Durudhara Yoga. Durudhara is about planets on both sides of the Moon. If those planets are benefic, it is essentially Shubh Kartari applied to the Moon, but the classical yogas use the wider description of any planets (other than the Sun) on both sides. Kartari looks at any point; Durudhara looks only at the Moon.

Sunapha and Anapha. Sunapha has a planet in the 2nd from the Moon, Anapha in the 12th. Each is half a Kartari. When both are present, Durudhara forms.

Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari. These are the Sun-based equivalents: Vesi (a planet in the 2nd from the Sun), Vasi (in the 12th from the Sun), and Ubhayachari (both sides).

Kemadruma Yoga. Kemadruma is the emptiness around the Moon, the opposite situation of having neighbours. Planets on both sides of the Moon are exactly what Kemadruma lacks, so the two do not occur together around the Moon.

How to check it in your own chart

  1. Find your ascendant sign. Note the sign just before it and the sign just after it.
  2. List the planets in those two signs. Ignore the outer planets that are not used in Vedic astrology.
  3. Decide which are benefic. Jupiter and Venus are simple. Mercury depends on its company. The Moon depends on its phase. Check whether they are also friendly for your ascendant.
  4. Check for any malefic in either sign: Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, and the Sun.
  5. If both sides pass, note the dignity of the two planets and their condition in the navamsa.
  6. Repeat the exercise from the Moon and, if you like, from the 7th and 10th houses.

The free kundali tool runs the ascendant version for you and lists the yogas it finds with the rule that fired. The yoga detection guide shows how each check is written. To understand what each flanking planet might mean, see the pages on Jupiter in the houses and Venus in the houses.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Shubh Kartari Yoga?

It is a classical pattern in which benefic planets sit in the houses immediately before and after a given house or planet, usually the ascendant, with no malefic in either. Kartari means scissors, and the point in the middle is said to be protected. It is read as support, goodwill and resilience.

↳ Does Shubh Kartari Yoga make the chart lucky?

It is a supportive background factor, not a guarantee of luck. It is most meaningful when the flanking planets are dignified and friendly to your ascendant, and when the ascendant itself is healthy. A single yoga does not override the rest of the chart.

↳ Can Shubh Kartari Yoga apply to the Moon?

Yes. The same idea is applied to the Moon, the Sun and any house. When benefics sit on both sides of the Moon it overlaps with Durudhara Yoga. The free kundali tool's Kartari check looks at the ascendant only, so you check the others by hand.

↳ What if only one side has a benefic?

Then it is not Kartari. A single benefic beside the ascendant is a helpful placement with its own reading, but the scissors pattern needs both sides filled, and neither side should hold a malefic.

↳ Do Rahu and Ketu spoil Shubh Kartari Yoga?

Most practitioners count Rahu and Ketu as malefics, so a node in either flanking house is taken to break the pure pattern. Some teachers give them no role. The kundali tool on this site treats them as malefics for this yoga.

↳ Is Shubh Kartari Yoga the same as benefics in the kendras?

No. Benefics in kendras is a separate supportive pattern about the angular houses. Shubh Kartari is specifically about the two houses on either side of a point. A chart can have either, both or neither.
