Kartari is the Sanskrit word for scissors. In astrology the picture is of a house or planet held between two blades, one on either side. When the blades are harsh planets such as Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu, the classical tradition calls the pattern Papa Kartari, literally the sinful or malefic scissors, and reads it as pressure on whatever is caught between them.
Many people meet this yoga in an automated report and worry about it, particularly when it is said to sit on the ascendant, which stands for the self. This article aims to give you a calmer and more accurate picture. The yoga is real in the classical sense and worth knowing about, but it is narrower than it sounds, it is easily overread, and it often describes a person who has had to grow strong rather than one who is doomed to difficulty. Nothing in a chart is a sentence, and this pattern is no exception.
How Papa Kartari Yoga forms
The rule is about neighbours. Take any house or planet. Look at the house directly before it (the 12th from it) and the house directly after it (the 2nd from it). If a natural malefic sits in each of those houses, and no benefic sits in either, the point in the middle is in Papa Kartari.
The commonest use is on the ascendant (lagna), which means malefics in the 12th house and the 2nd house of the chart. The same idea can be applied to the Moon, to individual houses and to other planets, so any report that says “Papa Kartari” should say what is hemmed in.
The natural malefics in the classical scheme are Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu, with the Sun counted as a mild malefic. The natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, a well-associated Mercury and a waxing Moon. The free kundali tool’s classical check for this yoga uses Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as the malefics and Jupiter, Venus and Mercury as the benefics, leaving the Sun and Moon out of the test. The Sun is classed as a malefic in many books, so you may see a chart that other sources would call Papa Kartari because of a Sun in the 2nd or 12th but which the tool does not flag. That difference is worth knowing about.
As a checklist for the ascendant:
- Identify the ascendant sign, the sign before it (12th house) and the sign after it (2nd house).
- Is at least one natural malefic in the 12th house?
- Is at least one natural malefic in the 2nd house?
- Is no benefic in either of these two houses?
If all four answers are yes, Papa Kartari Yoga is present on the ascendant.
A worked example
Take a Leo ascendant. The 12th house is Cancer and the 2nd is Virgo. Suppose Saturn is in Cancer and Mars is in Virgo, with no benefic in either sign. Both flanking houses hold a malefic and neither holds a benefic, so the ascendant is hemmed. Now add the detail that changes the reading: for Leo, Saturn rules the 6th and 7th houses and Mars rules the 4th and 9th, so Mars is actually a helpful planet here and, in many readings, the yogakaraka (a single planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona). A careful astrologer would not read this chart as simply harsh. They would say the ascendant is pressed by one demanding planet and one supportive one, which is a different story from the bare rule.
What the classical texts say
The idea of judging a house by its neighbours is part of the classical tradition of reading houses, and Kartari is recognised by name in it, in both its benefic and malefic forms. I can say with confidence that the concept is an old one. I cannot give you a chapter and verse that I am sure of, and I would rather say so than invent one. If you want the wording itself, look at the house-analysis sections of a good translation of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and of the later compendia, and compare more than one edition.
The logic is the part you can rely on. The 2nd house is resources, speech and family; the 12th is expense, loss, distance and rest. Harsh planets on both sides of the ascendant are read as restricting how freely the self can gather resources or let go of them: a sense of being hemmed in, of needing to push against limits, of support arriving late.
Where teachers differ:
- Aspect versus position. Some count only planets physically in the flanking houses. Others also count a malefic aspecting those houses. The narrow reading is safer.
- The Sun. Some lists include the Sun among the malefic blades, others do not, and the free tool leaves it out.
- Functional nature. Modern and classical teachers alike stress that a natural malefic can be a functional benefic for a given ascendant, and that this changes the reading a great deal.
- Benefics present. If a benefic joins a malefic in one of the flanking houses, most teachers say the pure pattern is broken or greatly softened, but they disagree on how much.
What it gives in a life
These are tendencies, never certainties, and they describe a pressure that many people turn into strength.
Character. With the ascendant hemmed, a person may feel that life asks them to work for what others seem to be given. The upside is resilience, self-reliance, and an early acquaintance with how things are earned. Many such people become disciplined, practical and difficult to discourage.
Health and energy. The ascendant governs the body and vitality, so the tradition speaks of restricted energy or a body that needs to be looked after. This is symbolic language, not a diagnosis. Anyone with a real health concern should speak to a doctor, and the yoga is no reason to worry about one.
Work and money. The 2nd and 12th are both money houses, one for income and saving and one for expenses and losses. Malefics on both sides suggest that money may require effort, and that there can be a pull toward over-working or worrying about supply. Steady, unglamorous saving habits tend to do more good here than speculative moves. If you want to look at the wealth picture directly, the lords of the 2nd and 11th are the place to start, as described in the Dhana Yoga guide.
Relationships. People with this pattern can be guarded at first, especially if the planets involved are Saturn or Ketu, and warm up slowly. Trust, once given, tends to be durable.
Other points of application. When the same pattern forms around another house, it shows up in that house’s themes: around the 7th, a cautious approach to partnership; around the 10th, a career that builds slowly; around the Moon, a mind that carries worry unless it is given a routine.
When it is strong and when it is weak
Which malefics. Saturn and Ketu on the flanks tend toward restriction, withdrawal and delay. Mars and the Sun tend toward friction, heat and pressure. Rahu tends toward restlessness and confusion. They are not interchangeable, and the planets involved tell you more than the bare name of the yoga.
Functional role. A malefic that rules a trikona or is the yogakaraka for the ascendant behaves quite differently from one ruling the 6th, 8th or 12th. A chart where the two blades are both functional benefics may show mostly discipline and little misery.
Dignity. A flanking planet in its own sign or exaltation has more capacity to behave well. A debilitated or combust planet in the same position is more awkward. Saturn in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius guarding the ascendant is a very different experience from Saturn in Aries.
Benefic aspects. A strong Jupiter aspecting the ascendant or the flanking houses is classically the best remedy for the pattern, because it reaches the same spot with generosity.
The ascendant lord. A well-placed, strong ascendant lord makes the hemmed ascendant far less worrying. The pattern presses on the point, but a strong lord gives it strength to push back.
Navamsa. As always, check whether the picture in the navamsa supports or eases the birth chart’s message.
When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)
A benefic sits in one of the houses. The rule requires the flanking houses to be free of benefics. A Jupiter or Venus in either house generally breaks or softens the yoga.
Only one side has a malefic. A single malefic in the 2nd or the 12th is a placement with its own readings, not Kartari. The scissors need both blades.
The malefics are functional benefics. As in the Leo example, what looks harsh on paper can be supportive for the actual ascendant. Reading only natural nature is the commonest mistake.
Confusing it with other yogas. Planets on both sides of the Moon belong to Durudhara Yoga, which is a different classification. The site’s own tool also flags other patterns that overlap with this one in a busy chart.
Overreading. Web reports sometimes say that Papa Kartari ruins the ascendant, health or relationships. That is not the classical tone. It is a pattern of pressure, mediated by everything else in the chart, and it does not override strong yogas elsewhere.
Forgetting the Sun. Because the free tool leaves the Sun out, a chart with a Sun in the 2nd and Saturn in the 12th may be Papa Kartari by some books and not by this tool. If your report and a book disagree, check which planets each counts.
Timing: when it activates
- The mahadashas and antardashas of the flanking planets are when the pattern is most felt. If Saturn sits in the 12th and Mars in the 2nd, Saturn and Mars periods are when restriction or effort tend to be noticed, and also when discipline pays off.
- The ascendant lord’s period brings the flanked point into focus.
- Transits. Saturn or Mars transiting the ascendant or its neighbouring signs can highlight the theme for a time. Jupiter’s transit over the same points often feels like a relief.
If you want to see how those periods are worked out, the article on mahadasha and antardasha goes through it step by step.
Calm practices that help
The tradition offers simple, low-key practices for this pattern. None of them is required and none is a cure. They are ways of meeting the theme of pressure with steadiness.
- Discipline and routine. Because the pattern is about restriction, a regular daily rhythm of sleep, meals, movement and work tends to help more than any ritual. Saturn and Mars both respond to steady effort.
- Mantra or quiet prayer. If you already have a practice, continue it. Some people chant a mantra to the planet that flanks the ascendant, for example a Saturn mantra on Saturdays or a Hanuman prayer on Tuesdays for Mars. Choose one you are comfortable with and keep it short and regular.
- Charity within your means. Small, regular acts of giving are the classical answer to difficult planets. Feeding others or helping someone who works with their hands is traditionally linked to Saturn.
- Good company. The yoga is about feeling hemmed in, so surrounding yourself with encouraging people, mentors and teachers is a practical remedy in its own right. Jupiter’s influence, including the wisdom of a good teacher, is the natural counterweight.
- Gemstones. Some astrologers suggest a stone for a supportive planet such as Jupiter or Venus. It is a classical option, not a requirement, and should only be considered after a full chart reading with someone you trust.
None of this replaces practical steps. If the pattern shows up as worry about money, see a qualified adviser. If it shows up as low energy or low mood, see a doctor.
How it differs from similar yogas
Shubh Kartari Yoga. The mirror image, with benefics on both sides: Shubh Kartari Yoga. Same geometry, opposite character.
Kemadruma Yoga. Kemadruma is an emptiness around the Moon: no planet on either side. Papa Kartari is the opposite kind of pressure, a crowding by harsh planets. Kemadruma is also about the Moon only, whereas Kartari can be applied to any point.
Shakata Yoga. Shakata concerns the Moon’s position relative to Jupiter and the ups and downs of fortune. It is a different condition from being hemmed by neighbours.
Anapha and Sunapha. These are the Moon’s single-sided neighbours. See Sunapha and Anapha. When malefics fill both sides of the Moon, both are technically present and the Moon is in a Papa Kartari of its own.
How to check it in your own chart
- Find your ascendant sign, then the sign before it and the sign after it.
- List the planets in those two signs.
- Decide which are malefic. Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are straightforward, the Sun is mild, and Mercury and the Moon depend on company and phase.
- Check that neither house holds a benefic.
- If both sides qualify, look at what these planets rule for your ascendant. Are they functional malefics or functional benefics?
- Look at Jupiter’s aspects to the ascendant and to the two flanking houses, and check the navamsa.
The free kundali tool checks the ascendant version and lists the yogas it finds with the rule that fired. The yoga detection guide shows how each check is written. To understand what the flanking planets mean in your own houses, see the articles on Saturn in the houses and Mars in the houses.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Papa Kartari Yoga?
It is a classical pattern in which malefic planets sit in the houses immediately before and after a given house or planet, usually the ascendant, with no benefic in either. Kartari means scissors. The point in the middle is read as pressed or restricted, which describes a theme of effort and discipline rather than a fixed outcome.
↳ Is Papa Kartari Yoga very bad?
No. It is a pattern of pressure, and its effect depends on which planets are involved, their dignity and what they rule for your ascendant. Many people with it develop strong resilience and self-reliance. It is best read alongside the whole chart.
↳ Does a benefic in one of the houses cancel it?
Generally yes. The rule requires both flanking houses to have a malefic and neither to have a benefic. A Jupiter or Venus in either house usually breaks or softens the pattern, though teachers differ on how much.
↳ Does the Sun count as a malefic here?
Many classical lists count the Sun as a mild malefic. The free kundali tool leaves it out of this test and uses Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. That means a chart can be Papa Kartari by some books and not flagged by the tool.
↳ What helps with Papa Kartari Yoga?
Steady routine, simple mantra or prayer, charity within your means and good company are the traditional, gentle answers. Some astrologers suggest a gemstone for a supportive planet, though it is optional. For health or money worries, consult a doctor or a qualified adviser.
↳ When does Papa Kartari Yoga show its effects?
Mainly during the mahadashas and antardashas of the flanking planets and of the ascendant lord. Transits of Saturn or Mars over the ascendant or its neighbouring signs can bring the theme forward for a time.
