The word daridra means poor or needy, and the name makes many people wince. A Daridra Yoga in a report can feel like a verdict. It is worth slowing down, because the classical rule is much narrower than the name suggests, it is found in a large share of charts, and it describes a particular friction around income rather than a fixed financial fate.
This article explains exactly how the yoga is defined, how often and why it appears, how it is cancelled or balanced, and what a sensible, calm reading looks like. Nothing here is financial advice, and no chart can tell you what your bank balance will do. What a chart can do is point to themes and timing, and help you work with them.
How Daridra Yoga forms
The rule used by the free kundali tool, and the one most widely repeated, is simple:
- Find the 11th house from the ascendant. This is the house of gains, income, networks and the fulfilment of desires.
- Identify its lord, the ruler of the sign on that house.
- Check whether that lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, the three dusthanas, meaning the houses of difficulty: 6 (debts, effort, service, competition), 8 (sudden change, what is hidden, other people’s money) and 12 (expenditure, loss, distance, retreat).
If so, the yoga is present.
The Sanskrit name Daridra Yoga means the yoga of poverty, or of lack. It is worth understanding the intention: the 11th lord is the planet that brings in gains, and putting it in a house of struggle, hidden things or outflow is read as income that has to be worked for or that leaks away.
As a checklist:
- Count signs from the ascendant to find the 11th house, then its ruling planet.
- Find the sign where that planet sits in your chart.
- Count which house from the ascendant that is. If it is 6, 8 or 12, the rule has fired.
How common is it
Because the 11th lord can sit in any of twelve houses and three of those are dusthanas, it is reasonable to expect that around one chart in four meets the basic rule, before any other factor is considered. This is a useful reality check. If a quarter of the people you know had a fate of poverty, that would be visible to everyone, and it is not. The yoga is a pointer to a pattern, and a very common one, not a rare curse.
The special cases where the lord is in its own sign
Some 11th lords own a second sign, and that second sign can fall in a dusthana. Working through the ascendants:
- Taurus ascendant: the 11th is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter also owns Sagittarius, the 8th house. If Jupiter sits in Sagittarius, it is the 11th lord in the 8th, and also the 8th lord in its own 8th house.
- Gemini ascendant: the 11th is Aries, ruled by Mars, who also owns Scorpio, the 6th house.
- Scorpio ascendant: the 11th is Virgo, ruled by Mercury, who also owns Gemini, the 8th house.
- Sagittarius ascendant: the 11th is Libra, ruled by Venus, who also owns Taurus, the 6th house.
- Pisces ascendant: the 11th is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, who also owns Aquarius, the 12th house.
In each of these cases the planet can sit in a dusthana in its own sign, which is a far more comfortable condition than a planet sitting there in an enemy’s sign. A reader should treat these as a distinct and milder version of the yoga.
What the classical texts say
Daridra Yoga is discussed in the classical literature, where wealth yogas and poverty yogas are set out side by side so that a chart can be weighed on both. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is usually cited for the poverty yogas, and the existing Dhana Yoga guide on this site notes that the classics advise checking a chart for poverty combinations before trusting a wealth yoga. I have not been able to confirm exact verse numbers, and the wording varies by edition.
There is real disagreement among sources about the definition. The version above, the 11th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, is the one the site’s classical check applies and the one most commonly quoted. Other lists attach additional or alternative conditions, for example involving the ascendant lord being weak or placed in the 12th together with the 12th lord, or the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strongly connecting with wealth houses. These are different rules and they would flag different charts. This article describes the 11th-lord rule, and readers should treat any one definition as a single lens, not the whole classical position.
The tone of the classics is also worth noting. They treat a poverty yoga as something to be weighed against the wealth yogas in the same chart, not as a verdict on its own. A chart with a Daridra Yoga and a strong Dhana Yoga is described as a life of ups and downs, which is a very human picture, not one of unrelieved lack.
What it gives in a life
Read as tendencies, never as certainties.
Income. Gains tend to come through effort, persistence and patience. The exact flavour depends on which house the 11th lord occupies:
- In the 6th house, income tends to come through service, employment, problem-solving or competition. There can be periods of debt or loan management, and also strong earning power in work that involves effort and skill.
- In the 8th house, income can be irregular or come through other people’s resources: insurance, inheritance, shared finances, research, or unusual channels. Stability takes planning.
- In the 12th house, money tends to flow outward as readily as it flows in. There can be earnings abroad or in distant settings, as well as a habit of generosity or of spending on comfort and travel.
Friendships and networks. The 11th is also the house of friends and of elder siblings. The yoga can show friendships that take effort to maintain, or a network that does not quite deliver what was hoped. It can equally show a person who learns early not to depend on others for their gains.
Desires. The 11th is the house of fulfilment. The yoga can suggest that aims are achieved slowly and sometimes after a change of plan. Many people with this pattern are entirely satisfied in the end, because the path taught them what they actually wanted.
Character. People with this yoga often become careful, resourceful and realistic about money. They are sometimes the ones who keep a budget when everyone else guesses.
When it is strong and when it is weak
Dignity of the 11th lord. An 11th lord that is exalted or in its own or a friend’s sign in the dusthana is far less troublesome than one that is debilitated or in an enemy’s sign. The specific cases listed above, where the planet is in its own second sign, are the mildest form.
Which dusthana. The 6th house is itself an upachaya house, meaning a house that tends to improve with time and effort, and many practitioners consider it the easiest of the three for the 11th lord. The 8th and 12th are more often associated with unpredictability and outflow respectively.
Benefic aspects. Jupiter aspecting the 11th lord, or aspecting the 11th house itself, is the classical supporting factor. So is Venus.
Combustion and affliction. An 11th lord that is combust, or closely conjunct Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, in the dusthana, is more difficult than one that is clear.
The 2nd and 9th lords. A well-placed 2nd lord (savings) and 9th lord (fortune) make a large practical difference and often outweigh a Daridra Yoga.
Navamsa. Check where the 11th lord is in the navamsa. A planet that is well placed there is giving a steadier message than the birth chart alone suggests.
When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)
Cancelled by an exalted or own-sign 11th lord. When the 11th lord sits in its own sign or exaltation sign while in the dusthana, most practitioners soften or set aside the yoga.
Balanced by the wealth yogas. A chart with strong Dhana Yoga, a strong Lakshmi Yoga or benefics in the upachaya houses (Vasumati Yoga) is not a chart of poverty. It is a chart with competing signals, and they are read together.
Viparita Raja Yoga. When the 11th lord is also the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, as in the Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces cases above, and it sits in a dusthana, the pattern can overlap with the logic of Viparita Raja Yoga, in which a dusthana lord in a dusthana is said to turn difficulty into gain. The rules differ, so the two need separate checking, but it is a recognised reason to read the yoga more gently. See also Harsha Yoga, Sarala Yoga and Vimala Yoga, which describe the dusthana lord in its own dusthana.
The 11th is not the whole story. Money in a chart depends on the 2nd house (savings), the 11th (income), the 9th (fortune), the 10th (career) and the dashas, not on the 11th lord alone.
The name creates fear. This is the biggest mistake online. A word meaning poverty is attached to a condition found in roughly a quarter of charts, and is then described in frightening terms. A quieter and truer reading is that income takes effort in some form. That is true for most people regardless of their chart.
Confusing it with Kemadruma. Kemadruma Yoga concerns the Moon and is sometimes also linked with financial struggle in popular writing. It is a different rule with a different cause.
Timing: when it activates
- The mahadasha and antardasha of the 11th lord are where the yoga is felt most directly. Income themes take centre stage, and the dusthana it sits in describes their flavour.
- The periods of the lord of the house it occupies. If the 11th lord is in the 8th, the 8th lord’s periods are significant.
- Jupiter and Venus periods often bring relief and support, especially if they aspect the 11th house or its lord.
- Transits. Saturn or Rahu passing through the 11th house can highlight income themes, while Jupiter moving through the 11th or aspecting its lord tends to ease them.
For how these periods are calculated, see the article on mahadasha and antardasha.
Calm practices that help
The tradition has simple, unhurried practices for a chart like this. None is essential and none replaces practical action.
- Steady financial habits. The best classical and modern advice agree: a regular budget, modest savings made on a fixed date, avoidance of speculation and debt that is hard to service. Saturn-type discipline suits this pattern.
- A short prayer or mantra. Many people offer a simple prayer to Lakshmi or Ganesha, or chant a short mantra for Jupiter on Thursdays, at a quiet time of day. The value is in regularity and in a settled mind.
- Charity within your means. Giving a little regularly, without announcing it, is the traditional answer to a troubled 11th house. Support for education or for people in need is often suggested.
- Good company. The 11th is the house of networks, so spending time with honest, constructive people, mentors and teachers is a practical remedy.
- Gemstones. Some astrologers suggest a stone for a supportive planet such as Jupiter. It is a valid classical option, not a requirement, and is best considered only after a full reading with someone you trust.
If worries about money are weighing on you, a qualified financial adviser is the right person to speak to. The chart can help you understand timing; it cannot replace a plan.
How it differs from similar yogas
Dhana Yoga. The Dhana Yoga guide covers the wealth combinations of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th lords. Daridra is in effect the shadow side of the 11th lord, and the two are read together.
Lakshmi Yoga. Lakshmi Yoga involves a strong 9th lord and a well-placed ascendant lord. It is one of the supportive yogas that can offset a Daridra Yoga.
Kemadruma Yoga. Kemadruma is a lack of support around the Moon. It is sometimes called a poverty yoga in popular writing, but it is a different condition and gives a different reading, mainly of the mind and of isolation.
Viparita Raja Yoga. Viparita Raja Yoga is the situation in which a dusthana lord in a dusthana brings gain after difficulty. It overlaps with Daridra in specific ascendants.
How to check it in your own chart
- Write down your ascendant sign and count to the 11th sign from it.
- Note the planet that rules that sign. This is your 11th lord.
- Find that planet in your chart and count its house from the ascendant.
- If it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the basic rule has fired. Note whether it is in its own sign, exalted or debilitated.
- Look for Jupiter’s aspect on the 11th lord and on the 11th house.
- Check the 2nd lord, 9th lord, and whether a wealth yoga is present, then look at the navamsa.
The free kundali tool lists the yogas it finds with the rule that fired, so you can see whether the 11th lord test was met. The yoga detection guide shows how the checks are written. To explore what a planet means in a given house, the articles on Jupiter in the houses and Saturn in the houses are good companions.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Daridra Yoga?
Daridra Yoga is most often defined as the lord of the 11th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. The Sanskrit name means the yoga of poverty, but in practice it points to income that comes with effort, delay or outflow, not to a fixed financial fate.
↳ Does Daridra Yoga mean I will be poor?
No. The basic rule is found in roughly a quarter of charts and is weighed against the wealth yogas, the 2nd and 9th lords and the dashas. It describes a theme around earning, not an outcome. For financial decisions, speak to a qualified adviser.
↳ Can Daridra Yoga be cancelled?
It is often softened or set aside. An 11th lord in its own or exalted sign, Jupiter aspecting the 11th lord or house, strong wealth yogas, or a well-placed 2nd and 9th lord all reduce its force. Some ascendants also give a Viparita Raja Yoga type of reading.
↳ Which is worse, the 11th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th?
Many practitioners treat the 6th as the easiest, since effort there tends to be rewarded, while the 8th is linked with unpredictability and the 12th with outflow. The planet's dignity and aspects matter more than the house alone.
↳ When does Daridra Yoga give results?
Mainly in the mahadasha and antardasha of the 11th lord and of the lord of the house it occupies. Jupiter or Venus periods often bring relief. Transits over the 11th house can highlight income themes.
↳ What simple practices help with Daridra Yoga?
Regular budgeting and saving, a short prayer or mantra, modest charity and keeping good company are the traditional, gentle answers. Some astrologers suggest a gemstone for a supportive planet, though it is optional. For money worries, see a financial adviser.
