Some houses in a chart improve with age. Vedic astrology calls them upachaya houses, from a word meaning increase or growth, and they are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. A planet placed in them tends to give its best results later rather than earlier, as effort accumulates. Vasumati Yoga is the name for the pattern in which the kindly planets, the benefics, are the ones sitting there.
The yoga is always presented as a wealth yoga, and its name, which has to do with riches, reinforces that. The classical rule is easy to state, but the texts and tools disagree about how many benefics are needed. This page lays out the rule, the strict and lenient readings, and what the yoga realistically says about money and growth.
How Vasumati Yoga forms
Vasumati is a Sanskrit word built from vasu, meaning wealth, and -mati, meaning possessing or full of. It is also a poetic name for the earth, the bearer of wealth. The name describes a chart whose resources are expected to grow steadily.
The rule in plain words: natural benefic planets occupy the upachaya houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, counted from the ascendant.
The natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus and Mercury (when not afflicted) and the Moon (when reasonably bright).
Checklist:
- Find the houses of Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and (if bright) the Moon.
- Mark which of them fall in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house.
- Count how many are there.
- Read the result by grade: one is a partial form, two is a good form, and all of the benefics in upachayas is the full form.
Where the sources and tools differ
This is a yoga where the exact threshold matters, and there is no single agreed answer.
- The classical engine on this site counts any natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or the Moon) in an upachaya house from the ascendant as the yoga, and grades it: one benefic is partial, two or more is good.
- The older kundali code is much stricter. It reports the yoga only when all three of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are in upachaya houses. It does not include the Moon.
- The classical wording refers to benefics in the plural. Read strictly, that points to all of them, or at least more than one. The lenient reading, a single benefic, is common in modern summaries.
- The reference point. Some teachers also count the upachayas from the Moon as an alternative reference. The two engines on this site both count from the ascendant only. I note the Moon-based counting as something found in some teaching and not one I can source with confidence.
This page treats the yoga as graded. A single benefic in an upachaya is a hint. Two is a real formation. All of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury is the full form that the older tool looks for.
How likely is it
Mercury never travels more than about 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than about 47 degrees, so they tend to be in the same house as the Sun or a house or two from it. That means the full three-benefic form depends heavily on where the Sun falls, and on where Jupiter happens to be. It is a demanding pattern, where a single-benefic form is quite common. That is why the grade matters more than the label.
What the classical texts say
Vasumati Yoga is found in the classical literature on named yogas and is repeated in later compendia. I am fairly confident that the benefics-in-upachayas definition is the classical one, and that it is associated with the same body of teaching as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika. I am not going to give chapter or verse, because I cannot give them reliably, and I cannot confirm the exact wording about how many benefics are needed.
The classical result is, in broad terms, a person of great wealth or ever-growing resources, prosperous and independent, who enjoys the fruits of their own efforts. The site’s classical engine summarises the idea as resources that grow with effort over time, rather than arriving all at once. That captures the key point: the upachaya houses are growth houses, so the wealth is earned and increases with time.
There is one classical idea that helps in understanding why benefics are placed here. Malefic planets are traditionally regarded as doing well in the upachayas, because difficulty and effort suit them. Benefics in the same houses give up a little of their own natural gentleness, since these are houses of striving rather than ease, but they lend those houses goodwill, skill and support. The yoga is read as a combination of effort and good help, so that the striving is supported.
What it gives in a life
These are tendencies, not guarantees.
Wealth that builds. The recurring theme is gradual accumulation. The person tends to see income and assets grow across the decades, often with the turning points in mid-life. There is no classical promise of sudden riches. The 2nd and 11th houses and their lords give the actual money indications, and the Dhana Yoga guide covers them. Vasumati Yoga is a supportive background.
The four houses, one by one. Each upachaya house gives the benefic a different channel:
| House | What it governs | What a benefic tends to add |
|---|---|---|
| 3rd | Effort, skills, courage, communication, siblings | Skilled communication, enterprise, good relations with siblings and peers |
| 6th | Work, service, competition, debts, health routines | Success in service and competition, capable handling of obligations |
| 10th | Career, public standing | A respected career and good reputation (see Amala Yoga) |
| 11th | Gains, networks, fulfilment of desires | Steady income, helpful friends and networks, fulfilled goals |
Work. The yoga is associated with careers in which skill and steady effort are rewarded: professions, trade, service industries, consultancy, teaching, finance, healthcare and enterprise. Mercury in these houses favours commerce and communication, Venus favours artistry, diplomacy and hospitality, Jupiter favours advisory and institutional roles, and a bright Moon favours work with the public.
Character. The classical picture is of an independent, industrious person who is comfortable earning their own way. The benefic influence is read as adding fairness and goodwill to that drive.
Relationships. Venus or Jupiter in the 11th gives supportive friendships. A benefic in the 6th is often read as good at resolving conflict. Benefics in the 10th and 3rd support professional and sibling relationships.
A worked illustration
This is a constructed example, not a real chart. Take a Virgo ascendant. The 3rd house is Scorpio, the 6th is Aquarius, the 10th is Gemini and the 11th is Cancer. Suppose Jupiter is in Cancer (the 11th house, where it is exalted), Venus is in Gemini (the 10th house), and Mercury is in Virgo (the 1st house). Two of the three benefics, Jupiter and Venus, are in upachaya houses, so the yoga is present in its good form, though not in the full three-benefic form that the stricter tool looks for, because Mercury is in the 1st.
The reading would then go a step further. For a Virgo ascendant, Venus rules the 2nd and 9th houses, which are both favourable for resources and fortune, so a Venus in the 10th is helpful. Jupiter rules the 4th and 7th, both kendras, which classical practice treats as a mixed placement for a natural benefic, so Jupiter’s exaltation in the 11th is a support but not an unqualified one. Notice how much of the real interpretation comes from these extra questions, and how little from the label.
Why the tradition values growth houses
The upachaya houses have a particular character: their results improve as time passes. The 3rd house is about effort and skill, which sharpen with practice. The 6th is about service and competition, where experience tells. The 10th is about career, which builds through years of work. The 11th is about gains and networks, which widen with age. The yoga is therefore a description of a chart in which the kindly planets are posted exactly where time works in a person’s favour. That is why the classical summary is wealth that grows steadily, and why readers who expect an early windfall are often disappointed while those who build patiently are not.
When it is strong and when it is weak
How many benefics. The more of the natural benefics in upachayas, the stronger the yoga. The full three-benefic form is the most complete. One is the lightest.
Which houses. The 10th and 11th carry the most direct money meaning. The 3rd and 6th are supportive houses of effort and service. A benefic in the 11th or 10th is read as especially helpful.
Dignity. A benefic in its own or exaltation sign is strongest. A benefic in a debilitation sign is weaker, unless cancellation rules apply (see Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga).
Combustion. Mercury and Venus are often combust, since they stay close to the Sun. A combust benefic counts by house but contributes less. Commonly cited limits are about 14 degrees for Mercury (12 when retrograde) and 10 for Venus (8 when retrograde), with small variations between authors.
Functional nature for the ascendant. A natural benefic that also rules difficult houses for your ascendant, or that rules the 8th or 12th, can behave less kindly than its natural label. Check what each benefic rules. A benefic that rules the 2nd, 9th or 11th is helpful for wealth.
The Moon. The Moon counts as a benefic only when reasonably bright, roughly from the first-quarter moon through the full moon to the last-quarter moon. A Moon close to new is often not counted.
Malefics in the same houses. Saturn, Mars, the Sun or Rahu in the same upachayas is common and usually considered productive in its own right. It mixes the picture, though, so the yoga’s smooth, supportive tone is reduced. The wealth is then more clearly earned through hard work.
Navamsa. If the benefics are also well placed in the navamsa, the support is considered deeper. See the navamsa calculator.
When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)
There is no dedicated cancellation rule. The yoga is usually read as thin when the benefics are combust, debilitated and uncancelled, or heavily afflicted, or when the 2nd and 11th houses and their lords are weak, so that the growth has no channel.
Common over-readings to avoid:
- Treating one benefic in an upachaya as the full yoga. The threshold is disputed, so grade it.
- Treating it as a guarantee of riches. Even the classical language is about growth through effort, not about a windfall.
- Expecting early results. Upachayas are slow houses, and the benefit tends to appear with time.
- Forgetting the dasha. A yoga without an activating period can sit quietly for years.
- Counting the Moon when she is nearly new. It is a weak benefic.
- Confusing it with Amala Yoga. Amala Yoga needs a benefic in the 10th from the ascendant or the Moon and is about reputation, where Vasumati is about growth across four houses.
Timing: when it activates
- The mahadasha and antardasha of the benefics in upachayas are the main activation windows. Because these are growth houses, the results tend to build through the period and often show most clearly in the middle and later parts of it.
- The lords of the upachaya houses add their own timing.
- The 2nd and 11th lords’ periods bring the money side forward.
Transits that support the yoga include Jupiter passing through the 11th, 10th or 3rd houses, and Saturn through the same houses, which is commonly read as a phase of steady building. To see how dashas work, read the Mahadasha and Antardasha guide and use the Mahadasha calculator to find your current period.
How it differs from similar yogas
Amala Yoga. Amala Yoga is a benefic in the 10th alone, and it is about reputation. Vasumati spreads across four houses and is about growth of resources.
Parvata Yoga. Parvata Yoga puts benefics in the kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and asks for a quiet 6th and 8th. It is about steadiness and standing. The 10th house appears in both yogas, but otherwise they look at different houses.
Adhi Yoga. Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from the Moon and is about leadership. Vasumati counts from the ascendant and uses different houses.
How to check it in your own chart
- Get your birth chart with an accurate time, since the upachayas are counted from the ascendant.
- List where Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon are.
- Mark which are in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house.
- Grade the result: one benefic, two, or all.
- Check dignity, combustion and what each benefic rules for your ascendant.
- Check the 2nd and 11th lords.
- Check the navamsa and the dasha timeline.
The free kundali tool lists the yogas it finds along with the rule that fired for each one. It shows which benefics fell in which upachaya houses, so you can see the grade at a glance. For the tool’s general method, see the yoga detection guide. To see how a benefic behaves in the house of gains, read Jupiter in the 11th house.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Vasumati Yoga in astrology?
Vasumati Yoga forms when natural benefics occupy the upachaya houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, counted from the ascendant. The name suggests wealth, and the yoga is traditionally linked with resources that grow steadily through effort over time.
↳ How many benefics are needed for Vasumati Yoga?
Sources differ. The classical wording speaks of benefics in the plural, some tools accept a single benefic as a partial form, and a stricter tool requires Jupiter, Venus and Mercury all in upachayas. It is best read as graded: one is a hint, two is good and three is the full form.
↳ What are upachaya houses?
Upachaya means growth. The upachaya houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, and planets there are traditionally said to improve their results with time. Malefics are usually thought to do well in them, and in Vasumati Yoga it is the benefics that sit there.
↳ Does Vasumati Yoga make you rich?
Not by itself. The classical emphasis is on wealth that grows with effort rather than arriving suddenly. Actual money indications come from the 2nd and 11th houses and their lords, and the dasha decides when growth is most visible.
↳ Is the Moon counted in Vasumati Yoga?
One of the tools on this site counts a bright Moon as a benefic for the yoga, and the other does not. A Moon near the new moon is usually not counted, since she is a weaker benefic.
↳ When does Vasumati Yoga give results?
Mainly in the mahadasha and antardasha of the benefics in the upachayas and the lords of those houses. Because upachaya houses grow with time, the results often build across the period and show most clearly later in it.
