In shortThe Moon and Mars in one sign join the mind to the will to act, and the pair is called Chandra Mangala Yoga. It tends to give a quick, passionate and enterprising nature, with feelings that translate into action fast, and its quality depends on the Moon's phase, the signs, the house and how Mars is placed.

The Moon is the mind, the mood and the need for security. Mars is energy, courage and the wish to act and win. When the two share a sign, what the person feels becomes what the person does, often without much delay. This is the Moon and Mars conjunction, and the standalone guide to the named yoga, Chandra Mangala Yoga, gives its rule and a worked example. This page is a conjunction-focused companion: it looks at the pair from the Moon’s side, which is the side that changes fastest and matters most for temperament.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: the Moon and Mars occupy the same sidereal sign. The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days, and Mars takes about six weeks on average. So every month the Moon passes Mars, and for about two days they share a sign. The Moon and Mars are together in roughly one chart in twelve.

Because the Moon moves so fast, the conjunction depends on birth time, and anyone born within a few hours of the Moon entering or leaving a sign can have it either way. Check with an exact birth time and a chart that gives the Moon’s degree.

Two friendly temperaments

In the friendship table of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Mars counts the Moon as a friend, and the Moon treats Mars as neutral. That is why the pair is not read as a clash. The Moon is cool and watery, Mars is hot and dry, but both are active, protective and quick to respond. The usual description is of a person who feels strongly and acts on it: passionate, loyal, brave, quick to defend and not easily left unmoved.

Phase and combustion

The Moon’s strength depends on its phase, and this changes the pair. A bright, waxing Moon with Mars gives a warmer, more confident mix. A dark waning Moon with Mars gives a more strained one, where feeling runs hot and has less ballast.

For combustion, the relevant question is how close either planet is to the Sun. Mars is combust within 17 degrees of the Sun and the Moon within 12 degrees on this site’s orb. If the Moon and Mars are both near the Sun, the pair is also touched by that closeness. See Sun and Mars and Sun and Moon for those readings.

What it points to

Emotional energy. The pair responds quickly. Joy, annoyance, enthusiasm and protectiveness are all near the surface and move into action.

Enterprise and self-earned money. The yoga’s reputation is for energy applied to earning: trade, property, construction, engineering, sport, medicine and surgery, and any work with a physical edge. There is no promise of wealth, which is read from the wealth houses; see Dhana yoga.

Courage. Defending the family or a cause comes naturally, and the person is rarely passive.

Shadow side. Irritability, impulsiveness and arguments that flare fast and pass. Sleep and routine make a visible difference. The traditional note that Moon and Mars together can tire the body is symbolism, not diagnosis; for health, see a doctor.

Home and mother. The Moon is the mother and Mars is the energy of the household. The conjunction is looked at with the 4th house for how family and property matters go, but nothing is fixed by it.

Relationships. Warm, intense and honest, with a need for a partner who can handle direct talk. Some charts also raise Mangal Dosha questions, which are decided by Mars’s house and have their own cancellations.

Named yogas

The named yoga is Chandra Mangala, as above. Some teachers extend the name to the Moon and Mars in opposition, in signs seven apart. The standalone guide discusses the difference and what is and is not confirmed in the older texts.

If Mars is also in its own or exalted sign in a kendra, Ruchaka Yoga is formed, and the pair can then be read as a strong enterprise placement. For the Moon with Jupiter, see Moon and Jupiter.

How the sign changes it

  • Capricorn: Mars is exalted. Focused, disciplined drive with the Moon as a steadying mood.
  • Aries and Scorpio: Mars is in its own sign; the Moon’s mood is bold in Aries and intense and private in Scorpio, where the Moon is debilitated, so feelings run deep and defended.
  • Cancer: the Moon is in its own sign and Mars is debilitated. Feeling outruns direction until the person finds a task to protect. Check for Neecha Bhanga.
  • Taurus: the Moon is exalted. Steady, sensual and resolute; effort is persistent.
  • Leo and Sagittarius: friendly signs of the Sun and Jupiter. Warmth, pride and principle shape the drive.
  • Others: read the sign lord.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a lively, quick presence, and self-confidence tied to mood.
  • 3rd: initiative, siblings, sport, writing and short journeys.
  • 4th: the home and property; the Moon is strong here by direction.
  • 5th: sport, creativity, children and competitive study.
  • 6th: Mars is comfortable here; energy goes into service, health routines and competition.
  • 7th: partnerships are the stage; warm and intense.
  • 10th: Mars is strong by direction, and the career is energetic.
  • 11th: gains through effort and a network of active people.
  • 2nd, 8th, 9th and 12th: speech and family; research and change; belief and teachers; retreat and travel. In each, the pair gives the house more speed than calm.

For the planets in each house, see the Moon in the houses and Mars in the houses.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Moon (10 years) and Mars (7 years) mahadashas, and in the antardashas inside each other: Moon and Mars and Mars and Moon.

What helps

Physical exercise, a regular sleep time, and a habit of waiting an hour before replying when angry. Any devotional practice is a personal choice.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of the Moon and Mars. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap, and note whether the Moon is waxing or waning.
  3. Check each planet’s dignity, then the house.
  4. Look at the sign lord and Saturn’s and Jupiter’s aspects.
  5. Check the dashas.

Both planets, with the Moon’s degree, appear in the planet position calculator, and the moon sign calculator confirms the Moon. Other pairs are in the conjunction library.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is the Moon and Mars conjunction called?

Chandra Mangala Yoga. It describes a nature in which feeling moves quickly into action, often linked to enterprise and self-earned money.

↳ Does it make a person angry?

It can give a quick temper that flares and passes, as feelings and action are close together. Routine, sleep and exercise usually help.

↳ Is the Moon and Mars conjunction good for money?

Tradition links it with earning through energy and enterprise. It does not promise wealth, which depends on the wealth houses and their lords.

↳ Does the Moon's phase matter?

Yes. A bright waxing Moon gives a warmer and steadier mix than a dark waning one, so phase is one of the first things to check.

↳ Is it connected to Mangal Dosha?
