Ketu is the descending node, the point of release and inner knowing. The Moon is the mind and the heart. When they sit in one sign, the person often has a sense of looking at their own feelings from slightly outside, as if part of the mind were always an observer. People with the pair sometimes describe a feeling of not quite belonging, and a strong intuition that they cannot explain. This page reads the conjunction calmly, as a tendency and not as a verdict.
How the conjunction forms
The rule: the Moon and Ketu occupy the same sidereal sign. Ketu is the node exactly opposite Rahu, moving backwards through the zodiac and spending about 18 months in each sign. The Moon passes it once a month for about two days, and about one chart in twelve carries the pair. Birth time matters, since the Moon changes sign within hours. Rahu is in the 7th sign from the pair, so the Moon looks at Rahu by opposition, and the pair belongs to the same axis as Moon and Rahu.
Ketu in tradition
In the myth, Ketu is the body of the demon who was beheaded: a being without a head, and so without the ordinary mind. It stands for release, past-life skill, spiritual search, research and what is known without being learned. See Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint. Because it has no body, Ketu is not treated as combust. What counts is how close it is to the Moon and how the sign lord stands.
Phase and the Moon’s strength
A bright waxing Moon with Ketu gives a more outgoing, warmer version of the pair, in which intuition is shared. A dark waning Moon gives a more withdrawn one. The distance in degrees matters as well: a tight conjunction is felt more strongly than a loose one in the same sign. If the pair is near the Sun, see Sun and Moon and Sun and Ketu.
What tradition says
Many teachers say Ketu detaches whatever it touches, and so the Moon with Ketu is read as detached from the ordinary comforts and routines the Moon seeks. Some books count it, like the Moon with Rahu, under Grahan Yoga, while others reserve the name for Rahu. The more common modern reading is of a sensitive, intuitive and spiritually inclined mind. The usual themes:
- Strong intuition, an inner life that is richer than it appears.
- A sense of being slightly apart, or of not belonging to the usual groups.
- Interest in meditation, mysticism, healing, research and the unexplained.
- A complicated or distant relationship with the mother or with the feeling of home, in some charts.
None of this is fixed. Ketu changes the Moon in different ways in different charts, and many people with the pair are warm, practical and well connected.
What it points to
Intuition. A sense of knowing, often accurate and often impossible to explain.
Sensitivity. The person may absorb the moods of a room and need time alone to recover.
Detachment. An ability to step back from drama, which can look like coolness. It is a strength in crisis, and a challenge in close relationships.
Work. Research, healing, counselling, astrology, meditation teaching, the sciences, technical craft and creative work done alone. Fields with an element of the hidden suit it.
Shadow side. Withdrawal, mood swings and a tendency to doubt one’s own feelings. Regular sleep, daylight and a trusted listener help. Anyone troubled by low mood or anxiety should speak to a doctor; the chart is not a diagnosis.
Relationships. Deep but not always demonstrative. A partner who respects silence does well.
Named yogas
There is no classical yoga that is clearly named for the Moon with Ketu alone. Some call it Grahan Yoga, with the caveat above. If all the planets are hemmed between the nodes, the chart may fall under Kaal Sarp Dosha, a separate question. Having a node in the Moon’s sign is not always counted as company in the matter of Kemadruma, and teachers differ, so check that guide with the full chart. If Jupiter looks at the pair, it is a supportive influence; see Moon and Jupiter for the Moon’s other close pairing.
How the sign changes it
- Cancer: the Moon is in its own sign. A very intuitive form, with a sense of home that is more inner than outer.
- Taurus: the Moon is exalted. Intuition combined with a practical, steady streak.
- Scorpio and Sagittarius: Ketu is often cited as comfortable in these signs, though schools differ. Depth, research and philosophy are themes. In Scorpio, the Moon is debilitated, so the pair is private and intense.
- Pisces: imagination and devotion are strong, and Ketu is linked to moksha.
- Gemini and Virgo: intuition meets analysis.
- Others: read the sign lord for support.
How the house changes it
- 1st: a quiet, observant, slightly mysterious presence.
- 3rd and 6th: effort and service done quietly. The pair is often read as helpful here.
- 4th: home as a retreat; the Moon is strong by direction, and Ketu adds a search for inner peace.
- 5th: meditation, mantra, creative work and study done for love.
- 7th: partnership asks for openness, as Rahu faces the Moon.
- 9th: teachers, faith and the search for meaning.
- 10th: a career built on expertise rather than display.
- 8th and 12th: the traditional home of research, healing, retreat and moksha.
- 2nd and 11th: speech and gains with an understated style.
For each planet in each house, read the Moon in the houses and Ketu in the houses.
Timing
The pair speaks in the Moon (10 years) and Ketu (7 years) mahadashas, and in the antardashas inside each other: Moon and Ketu and Ketu and Moon. Transits of the nodes over the natal Moon are another window; see the 2026 to 2028 Rahu and Ketu transit.
What helps
Time alone that is chosen rather than forced, a regular sleep time, daylight, and one or two people to whom you say what you feel. Any devotional or meditative practice is a personal choice.
Checking it in your chart
- Find the sidereal signs of the Moon and Ketu. If they match, the pair is present.
- Measure the gap. Programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by a degree or two.
- Check the Moon’s phase, the house and the sign lord.
- Look at Rahu opposite and at Jupiter’s aspect.
- Check the dashas.
The planet position calculator gives the sign and degree of the Moon and Ketu. Other pairs are in the conjunction library.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What does the Moon and Ketu conjunction mean?
It describes an intuitive, inward and sometimes detached mind that feels deeply but may not say so. It is a tendency, and its weight depends on the Moon's phase, the sign, the house and the rest of the chart.
↳ Is it the same as Chandra Grahan Yoga?
Some books apply that name to the Moon with either node, and others keep it for Rahu. It is best read as a theme about the mind, not as a fixed rule.
↳ Is it good for spirituality?
Many teachers read it as supportive of meditation and an inward search, especially in the 5th, 9th and 12th houses. It is a tendency and not a promise.
↳ Does it affect the relationship with the mother?
The Moon is the mother and Ketu detaches, so some readers look for distance or independence in that relationship. It is read with the 4th house and is not a fixed result.
↳ Can it cause low mood?
It can give a sensitive, withdrawn mind, but it does not cause low mood. Routine, daylight and company help, and a doctor is the right person to speak to about persistent low mood.
