In shortThe Moon and Rahu in one sign is called Chandra Grahan Yoga, after the lunar eclipse. Read calmly, it describes a vivid, restless and imaginative mind that takes in a great deal and can be unsettled by it, and its weight depends on the Moon's phase, how close Rahu is, the sign, the house and the rest of the chart.

The Moon is the mind and the feelings. Rahu is craving, curiosity and the pull towards the new and the unfamiliar. When the two share a sign, the mind is given an appetite: the person notices everything, wants more, and finds it hard to feel that enough has been taken in. The traditional name, Chandra Grahan Yoga, links the pair to a lunar eclipse. It is worth understanding the name, because it carries more fear than the chart does.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: the Moon and Rahu occupy the same sidereal sign. Rahu is a node, not a body: the point where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. It moves backwards through the zodiac, taking about 18 months per sign. The Moon passes it once every month for about two days, and about one chart in twelve carries the pair. Birth time matters, as the Moon changes sign within hours. Ketu is always exactly opposite Rahu, so Ketu is in the 7th sign from the pair.

A lunar eclipse happens at the full Moon when the Moon is close to a node, with the Earth’s shadow falling on it. In the myth, Rahu swallows the Moon. The chart idea follows: a Moon near Rahu is a Moon “eclipsed”, clouded by an outside influence. A natal Moon with Rahu in the same sign is not an eclipse. It is the Moon and Rahu together at any phase, and it can be a bright waxing Moon or a dark waning one. Our pages on eclipses and the eclipse visibility calculator explain real eclipses.

What tradition says

Rahu is described as clouding or stretching the Moon. The Moon governs sleep, calm and the sense of safety, and Rahu adds restlessness and craving. The usual themes:

  • A busy, imaginative mind, with strong impressions and vivid dreams.
  • A tendency to worry, or to chase the next thing without feeling settled.
  • An unconventional streak and an interest in the foreign, the technical or the unfamiliar.
  • A sensitive relationship with the mother or with feelings of home.

None of this is fixed, and many writers say a node alters the Moon less than a planet would. Many successful, inventive and original people have the pair.

Phase and the Moon’s strength

The Moon’s phase matters. A bright waxing Moon with Rahu gives a more confident, outward-looking version, with the appetite for novelty put to use. A dark waning Moon gives a more anxious one. The closeness of Rahu matters too: a gap of a few degrees is felt more strongly than 20 degrees in the same sign.

Combustion does not apply to the nodes. If the pair is near the Sun, its combined effect is touched by the Sun, as in Sun and Moon and Sun and Rahu.

What it points to

An absorbent mind. The person picks up moods, trends and information quickly, which suits research, media and the arts.

Imagination. Daydreaming, storytelling, design and fantasy. The challenge is to ground it.

Restlessness. Some people feel they are always looking for what is next. A fixed routine helps.

Worry and sleep. The symbolism is of a mind that struggles to switch off. Practical steps are consistent sleep, limiting late-night screens and having someone to talk to. Anyone troubled by anxiety, panic or sleeplessness should speak to a doctor. The chart is not a diagnosis.

Work. Technology, media, research, travel, foreign trade, psychology, film and the arts, and any field that rewards a mind that sees patterns.

Relationships. Intense and curious, with a risk of idealising and a need for a partner who is steady.

Named yogas

The name is Chandra Grahan Yoga, sometimes also called Grahan Yoga. Books define it differently: some count only the same-sign conjunction, some include a close conjunction in the next sign, and some add Ketu. It is a later tradition rather than a rule from the oldest texts. Treat any description that sounds like a curse with caution.

If the Moon and the nodes sit with all planets between Rahu and Ketu, the chart may fall under Kaal Sarp Dosha, which is a separate question. For the nodes in general, see Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint. Having a planet in the Moon’s sign also eases the classical concern about Kemadruma in the view of some teachers, although others do not count a node for this purpose.

How the sign changes it

  • Taurus: the Moon is exalted. In some schools Rahu is also well placed in Taurus, though schools differ. The pair is often read as material and sensual ambition.
  • Cancer: the Moon is in its own sign. Feeling is strong, and Rahu adds sensitivity.
  • Scorpio: the Moon is debilitated. Deep, private and intense.
  • Gemini and Virgo: curious, analytical and restless.
  • Pisces and Sagittarius: Jupiter’s signs bring principle and faith to steady the pair.
  • Others: read the sign lord. A strong, well-placed lord steadies the pair.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a changeable, imaginative personality that others find magnetic.
  • 3rd, 6th and 11th: the houses where Rahu is traditionally comfortable. Effort, competition and gains respond well to the pair.
  • 4th: home and mother, with an unsettled or unusual household; the Moon is strong by direction.
  • 5th: creative and unconventional study; children and romance have an unusual accent.
  • 7th: partnerships with someone different or from far away.
  • 9th and 10th: foreign teachers and a career in a modern or unusual field.
  • 2nd, 8th and 12th: speech and money with unusual flavour; research and the hidden; retreat and foreign settings.

For each planet in each house, read the Moon in the houses and Rahu in the houses.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Moon (10 years) and Rahu (18 years) mahadashas, and in the antardashas inside each other: Moon and Rahu and Rahu and Moon. Rahu’s transit over the natal Moon is another window; see the 2026 to 2028 Rahu and Ketu transit.

What helps

Regular sleep, a grounding routine, time outdoors and a place to put ideas, such as a notebook. Any devotional practice, such as quiet prayer on Mondays, is a personal choice.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of the Moon and Rahu. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap. Programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by a degree or two.
  3. Check the Moon’s phase, the house and the sign lord.
  4. Look at Jupiter’s aspect, which supports the pair.
  5. Check the dashas.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Chandra Grahan Yoga?

It is the name for the Moon with Rahu in one sign, after the myth of Rahu swallowing the Moon at a lunar eclipse. It is best read as a theme about an active, imaginative and sometimes restless mind.

↳ Does it mean I was born during a lunar eclipse?

No. A lunar eclipse needs a full Moon near a node. The natal conjunction can occur at any phase, and it only relates to eclipses by the name and the myth.

↳ Does it cause anxiety?

It can give a busy mind that takes in a lot, but it does not cause anxiety. Steady routines help, and anyone troubled by anxiety or sleep should speak to a doctor.

↳ Is it always a problem?

No. Many creative and inventive people have it, and its weight depends on the Moon's phase, how close Rahu is, the sign, the house and the rest of the chart.

↳ Where is Ketu if the Moon and Rahu are together?

Ketu is exactly opposite Rahu, in the 7th sign from the pair, so the Moon looks at Ketu by opposition.
