The name sounds alarming: Grahan means eclipse. The conjunction of the Sun and Rahu is called Grahan Yoga, or Surya Grahan Dosha, and online it often arrives with fear attached. This page takes the name seriously as a piece of tradition and then asks what it actually describes, which is a person with strong ambition, an unusual relationship with authority and a self-image that takes work to settle.
How the conjunction forms
The rule: the Sun and Rahu occupy the same sidereal sign. Rahu is not a body. It is one of the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s apparent path, a mathematical point called a node. Rahu moves backwards through the zodiac, taking about 18 months to cross a sign, and Ketu is always exactly opposite. The Sun passes Rahu once a year, so the conjunction is on for about a month in each year, and about one chart in twelve carries it.
If Rahu is with the Sun, Ketu is in the 7th sign from that position, which is worth remembering: the pair is part of a Rahu and Ketu axis, and the Sun also looks at Ketu’s side by opposition.
The myth
In the traditional story, the demon Svarbhanu drank a few drops of the nectar of immortality, was spotted by the Sun and the Moon, and was beheaded by Vishnu. The head lived on as Rahu and the body as Ketu, and they have pursued the Sun and Moon ever since, swallowing them at eclipses. That is the origin of the word Grahan, “seizing”, and of the idea that Rahu’s closeness to the Sun is a kind of eclipse in the chart.
The astronomical truth behind the myth is real: an eclipse needs the Sun and Moon to meet near a node. So the Sun and Rahu conjunction is simply the part of the year when the Sun is near the node, and eclipse seasons fall there. Our pages on eclipses and the eclipse visibility calculator show when and where.
What tradition says
The reading is that Rahu dims or distorts the Sun. The Sun is the soul, vitality and authority, and Rahu is craving, ambition and the unconventional. Hence the usual themes:
- An unsettled sense of identity in early life, with a drive to prove oneself.
- A complicated relationship with the father or with authority figures.
- Ambition that is larger than the situation, often paired with real ability.
- A taste for the unconventional: foreign settings, technology, politics, or unusual routes.
None of this is fixed. A node is not a planet, and classical writers disagree about how strongly it alters the Sun. A good number of ambitious, accomplished people have the conjunction.
Combustion
Rahu and Ketu are not treated as combust. The usual combustion orbs apply to the planets that have bodies, so the question is not whether Rahu is combust but how close it is to the Sun. A gap of a few degrees is a tight, strongly felt conjunction. A gap of 20 degrees in the same sign is looser.
What it points to
Ambition and image. A strong wish to be seen and to rise. Rahu amplifies, so the person may be unusually driven or unusually restless.
Authority. The person may challenge, copy or leave established authority. In many charts this is the root of an original career.
The father. The Sun is the father and Rahu complicates. The reading asks for gentleness, and the 9th house tells more.
Work. Politics, technology, media, aviation, import and export, research, and work in large organisations or abroad. Rahu is linked to the new and the foreign.
Shadow side. Over-reaching, impatience, and a sense that one’s real self is not yet seen.
Health. Traditional lists connect this combination with eyes, heart and vitality. That is symbolism and not diagnosis. Any health concern belongs with a doctor.
Named yogas
The name here is Grahan Yoga (or Surya Grahan Dosha). Different books define it slightly differently: some count only the conjunction in the same sign, some also count a close conjunction in neighbouring signs, and some add Ketu. It is a later tradition rather than a rule you can point to in the oldest texts. A balanced way to hold it is as a theme, not a curse.
It is also useful to see the larger picture. If all the planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, the chart may fall under Kaal Sarp Dosha, a separate question. For the nodes in general, read Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint.
How the sign changes it
- Leo: the Sun is in its own sign, so the Sun side is strong and ambition has a clear stage.
- Aries: the Sun is exalted. Bold and visible, with energy for new directions.
- Libra: the Sun is debilitated. The self-image is shaped through others, and Rahu adds a taste for refinement.
- Taurus and Gemini: schools differ on where Rahu is strong. The pair here is often read as material and mental ambition.
- Others: read the sign lord. A strong, well-placed lord steadies the pair.
How the house changes it
- 1st: strong presence and unconventional self-image.
- 3rd, 6th and 11th: the houses where Rahu is traditionally comfortable. Effort, competition and gains often respond to the pair here.
- 10th: a public, ambitious career; the Sun is strong by direction.
- 9th: the father, teachers and belief; unusual or foreign influences on faith.
- 4th and 7th: home and partnerships ask for steadiness.
- 8th and 12th: research, the hidden, travel abroad and retreat.
- 2nd and 5th: speech, family, children and learning get an unusual accent.
For the planets in each house, read the Sun in the houses and Rahu in the houses.
Timing
The pair speaks in the Sun mahadasha (about 6 years) and the Rahu mahadasha (18 years), and in the antardashas inside each other: Sun and Rahu and Rahu and Sun. Rahu’s own transits over the natal Sun are another window; see the 2026 to 2028 Rahu and Ketu transit.
What helps
A steady daily routine, honest conversation with elders and a long view of ambition. Any devotional practice, such as prayer to the Sun at dawn, is a personal choice.
Checking it in your chart
- Find the sidereal signs of the Sun and Rahu. If they match, the pair is present.
- Measure the gap in degrees.
- Check the house and the sign lord.
- Look at Jupiter’s aspect and at Ketu’s position opposite.
- Check the dashas.
Different programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by about a degree or two, so a pair near a boundary can read differently. The planet position calculator and the Rahu and Ketu transit calculator are the places to look. More pairs are in the conjunction library.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Grahan Yoga?
It is the name for the Sun with Rahu in one sign, after the myth of Rahu swallowing the Sun at an eclipse. Books define it slightly differently, and it is best read as a theme about ambition and authority.
↳ Is Surya Grahan Dosha serious?
Tradition treats it as a complicating influence, not a verdict. Many accomplished people have it, and its weight depends on the sign, house, the gap in degrees and the rest of the chart.
↳ Does it relate to the father?
The Sun is the natural significator of the father, so the pair is read for that theme, usually as a complicated or distant relationship. The 9th house and its lord give the fuller picture.
↳ Does it mean I was born during an eclipse?
No. The conjunction occurs for about a month every year when the Sun is near Rahu, but an eclipse also needs the Moon in line at a new moon. The two are related, not the same.
↳ Is Rahu combust with the Sun?
Combustion is applied to the planets with bodies. For the nodes, the practical question is how close they are to the Sun, with a tight conjunction felt more strongly.
