In shortThe Sun and Ketu together point to a self that looks inward: reserved about recognition, drawn to meaning more than status, and often unusual in its relationship to authority. Ketu is a node, not a body, so the conjunction is read by closeness and placement, and Rahu stands opposite.

If the Sun and Rahu is the conjunction of ambition, the Sun and Ketu is its quiet mirror. Ketu is the descending node, the point of release, detachment and inner knowing. The Sun is the self and the wish to shine. When the two meet in one sign, the wish to shine comes up against a pull to withdraw, and many people with the pair describe exactly that tension: they are capable of leadership but not always interested in its trappings.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: the Sun and Ketu occupy the same sidereal sign. Ketu is always exactly opposite Rahu and moves backwards through the zodiac, spending about 18 months in each sign. The Sun passes it once a year, so the conjunction is on for about a month in each year, and one chart in twelve has it.

Because Ketu is opposite Rahu, the Sun and Ketu in one sign means Rahu sits in the 7th sign from it. The Sun therefore faces Rahu by opposition, and the pair belongs to the same axis as the Sun and Rahu conjunction, seen from the other end.

Ketu in tradition

Ketu is the body of the demon in the myth: the headless trunk with a mystic’s knowledge. It stands for release, past-life skill, spiritual search, research and a talent that does not need an audience. It is said to bring things to a point and then let go of them. Our guide on Rahu and Ketu as the past-life blueprint sets this out in more detail.

Because Ketu has no body, it is not treated as combust. What matters is how close it is to the Sun, and how the sign lord stands.

What tradition says

Some books count the Sun with either node as Grahan Yoga. Others reserve the name for Rahu, which is the planet linked to the eclipse in the common telling. It is better to say that the Sun with Ketu is also read as a muted or turned-in Sun, and that the weight differs among schools. A moderate reading is the useful one.

The usual themes:

  • A quiet confidence that does not seek recognition.
  • A different relationship with the father or with authority: respect mixed with distance.
  • Interest in research, mysticism, healing, ritual or craft done for its own sake.
  • Periods of doubt about one’s role, followed by clarity.

What it points to

Detachment from status. The person may achieve a great deal without needing credit, or may turn down roles that would suit them on paper.

Inner authority. The Sun’s light turns inward, which is often described as self-knowledge, with honest reflection and a distinctive voice.

The father. The Sun is the natural karaka of the father, and Ketu detaches. The reading can be of distance, early independence or a father who is private, and it is a theme to read with the 9th house, not a fixed outcome.

Work. Research, medicine and healing, astrology and the sciences, spiritual or charitable work, technical or craft fields, and behind-the-scenes expertise.

Shadow side. A tendency to undervalue oneself, or to withdraw when the world offers feedback. Naming achievements helps.

Health. Traditional lists connect the pair with eyes and vitality, as symbolism and not diagnosis. A doctor is the right guide for any health concern.

Named yogas

There is no classical yoga that is clearly named for the Sun and Ketu alone. “Grahan Yoga” is sometimes applied to it, with the caveat above. Ketu also features in readings of Kaal Sarp Dosha when all the planets lie between the nodes. If the Sun with Ketu is in the 12th house, many teachers read the combination as favourable for the spiritual search.

How the sign changes it

  • Leo: the Sun is in its own sign. The Sun is strong, and Ketu adds a quiet depth to the leadership.
  • Aries: the Sun is exalted. A forward self with an inward pull.
  • Libra: the Sun is debilitated. The self is shaped by others, and Ketu adds a sense of detachment from approval.
  • Scorpio and Sagittarius: schools differ on Ketu’s strength; Scorpio is commonly cited as a sign where Ketu is comfortable. Depth and philosophy are themes.
  • Others: read the sign lord for support.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a reserved, private person with a strong inner life.
  • 3rd and 6th: effort and service done quietly; the pair is often read as helpful here.
  • 4th: a home that feels like a retreat, and a search for inner peace.
  • 5th: study, mantra, creativity done for love; children and teaching take an unusual turn.
  • 7th: partnership asks for openness, as Rahu faces the Sun.
  • 9th: the father, teachers and faith are intense, with spiritual search.
  • 10th: a career built on expertise rather than display.
  • 8th and 12th: the natural home of research, healing and retreat.
  • 2nd and 11th: speech and gains have an understated style.

For each planet in each house, read the Sun in the houses and Ketu in the houses.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Sun (about 6 years) and Ketu (7 years) mahadashas, and in the antardashas inside each other: Sun and Ketu and Ketu and Sun. The 2026 to 2028 node transit is a background timing, covered in Rahu and Ketu transit 2026 to 2028.

What helps

Quiet routines, work that you can finish, and a habit of telling one trusted person what you have achieved. Any devotional practice is a personal choice.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of the Sun and Ketu. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap. Remember that programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by a degree or two.
  3. Check the house and the sign lord.
  4. Look at the position of Rahu opposite and Jupiter’s aspect.
  5. Check the dashas.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Is the Sun and Ketu conjunction a Grahan Yoga?

Some books apply the name to either node, and others keep it for Rahu. It is best treated as a theme about a turned-in Sun, not as a fixed rule.

↳ What does Ketu do to the Sun?

It detaches the Sun from the wish for recognition. The person is often capable and reserved, valuing meaning over status.

↳ Is it good for spirituality?

Many teachers read it as supporting an inward and spiritual search, especially in the 5th, 9th and 12th houses. It is a tendency, not a promise.

↳ Does it affect the father?

The Sun signifies the father, so the pair is read for themes of distance or independence. The 9th house and its lord give the fuller picture.

↳ Where is Rahu if the Sun and Ketu are together?

Rahu is exactly opposite Ketu, in the 7th sign from the pair, so the Sun looks at Rahu by opposition.
