In shortMars and Ketu together point to a focused, fearless and sometimes abrupt energy, often with a streak of detachment from results. Many teachers say Ketu behaves in a Mars-like way, so the pair is read as concentrated. Ketu is a node, not a body, and Rahu stands opposite, so closeness, sign and house decide the reading.

Ketu is the descending node, the point of release, research and inner knowing. Mars is energy, courage and the will to act. When they sit in one sign, the usual impression is of someone who can concentrate with great force and then let go completely, who is brave without fuss and who does not need an audience for what they do. It is a quieter pairing than Mars with Rahu, and sometimes a more surgical one.

This page covers how the conjunction forms, what tradition says, and how the sign and house change it. It describes tendencies and not a fate.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: Mars and Ketu occupy the same sidereal sign. Ketu is the node exactly opposite Rahu. It moves backwards through the zodiac, spending about 18 months in each sign, and Mars, going forward, catches it about every 20 months. About one chart in twelve carries the pair.

Because Ketu is opposite Rahu, Mars with Ketu means Rahu sits in the 7th sign from the pair. Mars therefore looks at Rahu by opposition, and the conjunction belongs to the same axis as Mars and Rahu, seen from the other end. Rahu and Ketu are always opposite and never conjoin each other. For the nodes in general, see Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint.

Ketu in tradition

In the myth, Ketu is the body of the demon who was beheaded: a being without a head, and so without the ordinary thinking mind. It stands for release, past-life skill, spiritual search, research and knowledge that is not learned. Many teachers say Ketu acts in a way that resembles Mars, with the same heat and the same directness, but turned inward and cut loose from reward. That is a common way of reading it and not a verse in the oldest texts.

Because Ketu has no body, it is not treated as combust. What counts is how close it is to Mars and how the sign lord stands.

Combustion

The orb for Mars on this site is 17 degrees from the Sun. That applies to Mars, a planet with a body, so Mars near the Sun is read as in the Sun’s glare whether or not Ketu is with it, and many teachers say its independent results are absorbed into the Sun’s. See Sun and Mars and Sun and Ketu if the Sun is in the same sign. For the node itself, a gap of a few degrees is a tight, strongly felt pair and a gap of 20 degrees in the same sign is looser.

What it points to

Focus and courage. A capacity for exact, concentrated effort and little fear of difficulty. The pair appears often in traditional lists of surgeons, researchers and others who work calmly under pressure.

Detachment. The person often does the work without needing to be seen or thanked, and can walk away from a job, a plan or an argument abruptly.

Work. Surgery and other precise manual work, research, engineering, technical or investigative fields, the military, sport, martial arts and spiritual or ascetic paths. The house decides the emphasis.

Temper. The shadow side is a sudden, cold anger and an abrupt style. The pair may under-explain, so others cannot tell what is going on. Saying a little more than feels necessary helps.

Health and safety. Traditional lists link Mars and Ketu with accidents, surgery, fevers and the blood. That is symbolism and not diagnosis. Care around speed, tools and heat is sensible whatever a chart says, and any health concern belongs with a doctor.

Relationships. The person may seem distant or hard to read, while caring deeply. A partner who is comfortable with some silence suits them, and open talk about plans prevents misunderstanding.

Named yogas

There is no classical yoga that is clearly named for Mars with Ketu alone. Some modern writers describe it as a relative of Angarak Yoga, the name for Mars with Rahu, while others do not count Ketu in that name at all, and teachers differ. It is better to hold it as a theme. It is separate from Mangal Dosha, which concerns Mars in particular houses and has its own rules; see the Mangal Dosha calculator.

If all the planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, the chart may fall under Kaal Sarp Dosha, a separate question. Ruchaka Yoga applies when Mars is in its own or exalted sign in a kendra, whatever else is nearby.

How the sign changes it

  • Scorpio: Mars is in its own sign, and Ketu is often cited as comfortable here, though schools differ. Depth, research and strategy are themes.
  • Aries: Mars is in its own sign. Direct, brave and focused, with a quiet streak.
  • Capricorn: Mars is exalted. Disciplined and patient effort, particularly in technical work.
  • Sagittarius: Ketu is often cited as comfortable here too. A philosophical, principled edge to the pair.
  • Cancer: Mars is debilitated. Drive is moody and inward; check for Neecha Bhanga.
  • Others: read the sign lord. A strong, well-placed lord steadies the pair.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a quiet, intense and independent presence; the person is hard to push.
  • 3rd and 6th: the houses where Mars is strong and malefics comfortable. Effort, skill and competition respond well to the pair here.
  • 4th: a restless search for peace at home; the person may be private about home life.
  • 5th: a focused, unconventional approach to study, strategy and creative work.
  • 7th: partnerships need open talk about space and plans.
  • 10th: a skilled, quietly effective career; Mars is strong by direction here.
  • 11th: gains through persistence and a small, loyal network.
  • 8th and 12th: research, retreat, healing work, long stays away and spiritual practice.
  • 2nd and 9th: brief, direct speech, and an independent view of belief and teachers.

For each planet in each house, read Mars in the houses and Ketu in the houses.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Mars and Ketu mahadashas, each about 7 years, and in the antardashas inside each other: Mars and Ketu and Ketu and Mars. Transits of the nodes over the natal Mars are another window; see the 2026 to 2028 Rahu and Ketu transit.

What helps

A demanding craft or discipline, physical activity and a few minutes of quiet each day. Telling people the plan before acting on it. Any devotional practice is a personal choice.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of Mars and Ketu. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap in degrees.
  3. Check the dignity of Mars, then the house and the sign lord.
  4. Look at Jupiter’s aspect and at Rahu’s position opposite.
  5. Check the dashas.

Different programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by about a degree or two, so a pair near a boundary can read differently. The planet position calculator and the Rahu and Ketu transit calculator are the places to look. More pairs are in the conjunction library.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What does Mars and Ketu in the same sign mean?

It points to focused, fearless and sometimes abrupt energy with a streak of detachment. Many teachers say Ketu behaves in a Mars-like way, so the pair is read as concentrated and inward.

↳ Is Mars and Ketu a bad conjunction?

Tradition treats it as intense, not as a verdict. It can give skill, courage and calm under pressure, and its weight depends on the sign, house, the gap in degrees and the rest of the chart.

↳ Is it the same as Angarak Yoga?

No. Angarak Yoga is the usual name for Mars with Rahu. Some writers extend it to Ketu, but books differ, and it is better to treat Mars with Ketu as its own theme.

↳ Which careers suit it?

Tradition lists surgery, research, engineering, investigation, the military, martial arts and spiritual paths. Any work that rewards calm, exact effort fits the theme.

↳ Are Rahu and Ketu ever together?

No. They are always exactly opposite each other, so they never share a sign. If Mars is with Ketu, Rahu is in the 7th sign from that position.
