Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) are the two natural benefics, and in the old stories they are the teachers of the gods and of the demons. One stands for wisdom, ethics and faith in the larger order, the other for love, art, comfort and the enjoyment of life. When they share a sign, a person often grows up with both a serious interest in meaning and a real appreciation for beauty. This page reads the pair calmly, as a tendency and not a verdict.
How the conjunction forms
The rule: Jupiter and Venus occupy the same sidereal sign. Jupiter takes about a year to cross a sign. Venus runs round the whole zodiac in roughly a year, so it passes Jupiter about once every thirteen months and, when it does, it stays in Jupiter’s sign for a few weeks. Across all births, around one chart in twelve carries the pair.
Because Venus moves quickly, two people born in the same year can have it in different degrees and different houses, so the gap and the house matter more here than the bare fact of the conjunction. Venus also never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, which means it is often found close to the Sun and sometimes combust.
Teachers with different aims
In the friendship table of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Jupiter regards Venus as an enemy, while Venus regards Jupiter as neutral. The mythology fits: Jupiter’s school teaches restraint and dharma, and Venus’s school, through its guru Shukracharya, teaches the arts of life and of revival. The table does not say the two cannot work together. It says their temperaments differ, so the person is likely to feel pulled between what they believe is right and what they enjoy.
That pull is usually productive. Many people with the pair describe a taste for teaching, counselling, culture or hospitality, where principle and warmth are both needed.
Combustion and the Sun
Neither planet burns the other. Combustion only concerns closeness to the Sun, and the orbs on this site are 11 degrees for Jupiter and 10 degrees for Venus (8 when retrograde). In practice the question is whether the pair sits near the Sun. Venus is the one that is often caught, and a combust Venus is read by many teachers as less able to give ease in love and comfort, though others hold that its talents still show. If the pair lies close to the Sun, see Sun and Venus and Sun and Jupiter.
What it points to
Values and taste together. An interest in ethics, learning and the arts at once, and a wish for a life that is both good and agreeable.
Generosity. Both planets give, so the pair is read as hospitable, charitable and fond of company.
Relationships. Venus is the karaka of marriage for a man’s chart and Jupiter for a woman’s, as most teachers say, so the pair draws attention to partnership in every chart. Expect a serious, affectionate and often idealistic approach.
Money. Both planets are linked with wealth in different ways, Jupiter with abundance and Venus with comfort. This is a theme, not a promise, and the 2nd and 11th houses and their lords decide the practical picture.
Work. Teaching, law, counselling, finance, the arts, design, hospitality, culture, publishing and advisory roles.
Shadow side. Too much ease, too many second helpings, and the temptation to excuse an indulgence with a principle. Moderation is the traditional advice.
Health. Traditional lists connect the pair with the liver, sugar balance and weight, as symbolism and not diagnosis. A doctor is the right guide for any health concern.
Named yogas
There is no classical yoga named for Jupiter and Venus alone. What deserves a check is whether the planets take part in better-known combinations. Saraswati Yoga asks for Jupiter, Venus and Mercury to occupy kendras, trikonas or the 2nd house in suitable signs, and is read as a sign of learning and artistic gift. Lakshmi Yoga concerns the lord of the 9th house, not this pair. Hamsa Yoga and Malavya Yoga ask for Jupiter or Venus strong in its own or exalted sign in a kendra, and the Pancha Mahapurusha finder tests both.
How the sign changes it
- Pisces: Jupiter is in its own sign and Venus is exalted. The most favourable placement of the pair by tradition: devotion, art and compassion.
- Taurus and Libra: Venus is in its own sign. Comfort, beauty and partnership lead, with Jupiter as a guest.
- Sagittarius: Jupiter is in its own sign. Philosophy and generosity lead, with Venus supporting.
- Cancer: Jupiter is exalted. A warm, caring pair with a strong sense of home.
- Virgo: Venus is debilitated. The pair is analytical about pleasure; check Neecha Bhanga.
- Capricorn: Jupiter is debilitated. Ideals meet practical limits, and Neecha Bhanga is worth a look.
- Others: read the sign lord for support.
How the house changes it
- 1st: a gracious, optimistic presence. Jupiter is strong by direction here.
- 2nd: pleasant speech, a love of good food and a strong family sense.
- 4th: a comfortable home and early education; Venus is strong by direction here.
- 5th: creativity, teaching and study done with enjoyment; children are a theme.
- 7th: partnership is idealised, and honesty about expectations helps.
- 9th: teachers, faith and travel for learning.
- 10th: a career in teaching, the arts, advice or public service.
- 11th: gains through friends and networks.
- 6th, 8th and 12th: the pair is quieter. The 12th suits retreat and the arts done privately, and the 8th suits research and inherited matters.

Timing
The pair speaks in the Jupiter (16 years) and Venus (20 years) mahadashas, and in the antardashas inside each other: Jupiter and Venus and Venus and Jupiter. Jupiter’s transit is a background timing, and the Jupiter transit calculator shows where it is over your chart.
What helps
Choosing quality over quantity, keeping a regular routine in food and rest, and giving time to learning and to generosity. Any devotional practice, such as a Thursday or Friday custom, is a personal choice and not a requirement.
Checking it in your chart
- Find the sidereal signs of Jupiter and Venus. If they match, the pair is present.
- Measure the gap, and check how far both are from the Sun.
- Check each planet’s dignity, then the house.
- Note whether either takes part in Saraswati, Hamsa or Malavya Yoga.
- Check the dashas.
The planet position calculator gives the sign, degree and house of both planets. The other pairs are in the conjunction library.
Frequently asked questions
↳ Is the Jupiter and Venus conjunction good?
Tradition reads it as favourable, since both are benefics. The classical table lists Jupiter as seeing Venus as an enemy, so the quality of the result depends on sign, house and the rest of the chart.
↳ Does it give wealth?
Both planets are linked with abundance and comfort, so many teachers read the pair as supportive of money. It is a theme and not a promise, and the 2nd and 11th houses and their lords matter more for the practical picture.
↳ What does it say about marriage?
Venus and Jupiter are both marriage karakas, so the pair draws attention to partnership. It is read as affectionate and idealistic, and it works best when expectations are said aloud.
↳ Is it the same as Saraswati Yoga?
No. Saraswati Yoga needs Jupiter, Venus and Mercury in particular houses and signs. The conjunction of Jupiter and Venus can contribute to it but does not form it alone.
↳ What if Venus is combust?
Venus is combust within about 10 degrees of the Sun on this site's orb. Teachers differ on how much that dims it, and the gap in degrees counts for more than the label.
