In shortThe Sun and Jupiter together are read as a principled, advisory pairing: the Sun gives authority and Jupiter gives wisdom, faith and breadth. Jupiter is a friend of the Sun, and the pair is usually seen as supportive, with the caution that Jupiter counts as combust within about 11 degrees of the Sun.

The Sun and Jupiter are old allies in the language of astrology. The Sun stands for the self, authority and one’s place in the world. Jupiter, the Guru, stands for wisdom, teaching, faith, good counsel and growth. A person with the two in one sign is often described as having a strong moral centre and a natural sense of responsibility.

This page sets out how the conjunction forms, what tradition says, what to watch for, and how sign and house shape it. The usual caveat applies: the chart shows tendencies, and the planets’ dignity and the rest of the chart decide how they play out.

How the conjunction forms

The rule is that the Sun and Jupiter occupy the same sidereal sign. Jupiter spends about a year in each sign. The Sun passes through in a month. So every year the Sun catches up with Jupiter once, and for most of a month the two are in one sign. That is the reason this conjunction appears in around one chart in twelve: the Sun is in Jupiter’s sign for about a month in every year.

You can also read it as a slow annual event. In a year when Jupiter is in a given sign, anyone born in the month when the Sun is in that sign has the conjunction.

A friendly pair

In the friendship scheme of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Jupiter is a friend of the Sun and the Sun is a friend of Jupiter. This is the main reason the combination is read warmly. Both are called sattvic in character, the Sun for light and Jupiter for wisdom. Neither is a malefic by nature, though the Sun is often called a mildly cruel planet because of its heat.

The traditional picture is a person who seeks right conduct, respects teachers and tradition, and tends to be asked for advice. Occupations that suit it include teaching, law, the judiciary, administration, banking, counselling, the priesthood or religious work, and any role with trust attached.

Combustion

The orb this site uses for Jupiter is 11 degrees on each side of the Sun. A combust Jupiter is read by many teachers as having a reduced capacity to give its usual gifts: the guidance may be there but harder to put into words, or the person may feel that their principles are not recognised. Other teachers say that Jupiter, as a friend of the Sun, is less harmed than other planets, and that the pairing’s strength lies in self-belief anchored by values.

Because Jupiter moves slowly, a close conjunction lasts for many days of birth dates, so a lot of people share it. The gap in degrees is a better guide than the label.

What it points to

Principle and purpose. People with this pairing often hold firm views on what is right, and the Sun gives them the confidence to say so.

The teacher and the father. The Sun and Jupiter are both associated with the father, teachers and elders. A readable theme is respect for guidance, and sometimes tension between independence and obedience.

Authority that is earned. Rather than force, the pair favours standing that comes through knowledge. This is a theme to cultivate, and it asks for continued learning.

Shadow side. Over-certainty. A person who knows they mean well may find it hard to hear that someone else disagrees. Another shadow is pride in being right, or advising too much.

Health and body. Jupiter relates to the liver and metabolism in traditional lists, and the Sun to vitality. This is symbolism, not diagnosis, and any health concern belongs with a doctor.

Money. The pair supports a good name and sound judgement. Wealth is read from the wealth houses and their lords; see Dhana yoga.

Named yogas

There is no classical name that is widely accepted for the plain Sun and Jupiter conjunction. You may see “Guru Aditya Yoga” used by some modern writers, but it is a convenience and not a rule from older sources. More useful to check are the Jupiter yogas that can be in the same chart. Hamsa Yoga is formed when Jupiter is in its own or exalted sign in a kendra, and the Sun and Jupiter together in Sagittarius or Pisces, Jupiter’s own signs, or in Cancer, where Jupiter is exalted, can meet that condition when the house is a kendra. Check it in the Pancha Mahapurusha yoga finder. Also see Raja yoga for lords of kendras and trikonas.

How the sign changes it

  • Sagittarius and Pisces: Jupiter is in its own sign. Faith, learning and teaching are strong, and the Sun feels welcome.
  • Cancer: Jupiter is exalted and the Sun is a guest. Care, nurture and wisdom combine, with a warm style of leadership.
  • Leo: the Sun is in its own sign and Jupiter is a friend. Confident, generous, and a little grand.
  • Aries: the Sun is exalted, Jupiter is comfortable. Idealism with energy.
  • Capricorn: Jupiter is debilitated. Values meet practical limits, and wisdom often comes through experience; this is a sign to check for Neecha Bhanga, see Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.
  • Libra: the Sun is debilitated. Principles are tested in relationships, and the person often grows through compromise.
  • Others: read the sign lord.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a dignified, mentor-like personality.
  • 2nd: speech that carries counsel, and family values.
  • 5th: teaching, children, study and advice. Jupiter is the natural karaka of the 5th, so this is a strong house.
  • 9th: the house of dharma, teachers and the father. The pair feels at home here, and the father or guru is a prominent theme.
  • 10th: a public role; the Sun is strong by direction here.
  • 11th: a wide circle and gains through networks.
  • 4th and 7th: home and partnership are the stage. Jupiter is strong in the 1st and in kendras generally.
  • 6th, 8th and 12th: the pair works in service, research, spiritual study or distant places. Jupiter in the 12th is a traditional placement for moksha and travel.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Sun (about 6 years) and Jupiter (about 16 years) mahadashas, and in their antardashas inside each other: Sun and Jupiter, Jupiter and Sun. Jupiter’s transits over the natal pair are a favoured background timing; see the Jupiter transit calculator.

What helps

Keep learning and keep a teacher or peer who can disagree with you honestly. Any devotional practice, such as respect for a guru or a Thursday custom, is a personal choice and not a requirement.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of the Sun and Jupiter. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap: under 11 degrees is combust on this site’s orb.
  3. Check the dignity of both and the house.
  4. Look at the sign lord, and at Saturn’s influence.
  5. Check the dashas.

Use the planet position calculator to see where both planets stand. Further pairs are in the conjunction library.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Is Sun and Jupiter a good conjunction?

It is usually read as supportive, because Jupiter and the Sun are friends and both are of a lighter, principled nature. The caution is combustion, when Jupiter is within about 11 degrees of the Sun.

↳ Does combustion cancel Jupiter's results?

Many teachers say it reduces them, and others say Jupiter is less affected because it is the Sun's friend. The distance in degrees and the rest of the chart matter more than the label.

↳ What does the pair say about the father?

Both planets are linked to fathers, teachers and elders, so they are looked at together. This is a theme to consider with the 9th house and its lord, not a fixed result.

↳ Is it a Raja yoga?

Not by itself. It can become one if the planets also rule a kendra and a trikona for your ascendant, which depends on your chart.

↳ Is there a name for this conjunction?

Some modern writers say Guru Aditya Yoga, but it is a convenience and not a classical rule I can point to.
