Jupiter is wisdom, faith, teachers and the established order of things. Rahu is hunger, curiosity, the foreign and the unfamiliar. When the two share a sign, Rahu pushes against what Jupiter holds sacred, and the person tends to question what they were taught, sometimes productively and sometimes restlessly. The traditional name, Guru Chandala Yoga, sounds severe, so this page sets out what it means and what it does not.
How the conjunction forms
The rule: Jupiter and Rahu occupy the same sidereal sign. Rahu is a node, not a body: the point where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. It moves backwards through the zodiac, taking about 18 months per sign, while Jupiter moves forwards at about a year per sign. The two meet about every seven years and stay in a sign together for some months. Across all births, about one chart in twelve carries the pair.
Ketu is always exactly opposite Rahu, so Ketu sits in the 7th sign from the pair and Jupiter, which aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself, looks straight at Ketu. The same axis is read from the other end in Jupiter and Ketu.
The name Guru Chandala
The label joins two words. Guru is Jupiter, the teacher. Chandala is an old word for an outsider in the social order, and it was applied to Rahu as the planet that stands outside the usual rules. The name appears in later astrological writing and popular teaching more than in the early classical texts, and teachers do not agree on its exact conditions. Some use it only when the planets are within a few degrees, some for any pair in one sign, and some also count Rahu’s aspect on Jupiter.
It helps to separate the myth from the experience. Many scholars, teachers, writers and thinkers who bring something new into an old field have this pairing in their charts. It is better read as a theme of breaking from convention than as a mark against the person.
Combustion
Nodes are not treated as combust, and Jupiter is combust within 11 degrees of the Sun on this site’s orb. If the pair lies close to the Sun, see Sun and Jupiter and Sun and Rahu. A close gap between Jupiter and Rahu matters as well: a few degrees is a strong blend, while 20 degrees in the same sign is loose.
What tradition says
Rahu is described as stretching and clouding whatever it touches, and Jupiter is the planet it most easily distorts. The usual themes:
- A questioning mind that tests received wisdom before accepting it.
- Ambition in learning, teaching, law, finance or faith, often through unusual channels.
- Interest in foreign cultures, new technologies and philosophies outside the family tradition.
- A relationship with teachers and mentors that is complicated, close at one stage and distant at another.
None of this is fixed. Where Jupiter is strong in its own or exalted sign, many teachers say the effect on it is much lighter, and Jupiter’s wisdom shapes Rahu’s appetite instead of the reverse.
What it points to
Independent thinking. A person who builds their own view and who may leave the path expected of them.
Foreign and modern knowledge. Study abroad, new fields and new tools are common themes.
Ethical tests. Rahu can tempt shortcuts in matters Jupiter would handle by principle. Clear personal rules and honest advisers help.
Work. Teaching, research, law, consulting, publishing, finance, technology, international business and the media.
Children and teachers. Jupiter is the karaka of children and gurus, so the 5th and 9th houses are looked at as well. This is a theme and not a prediction.
Health. Traditional lists connect the pair with the liver, weight and the digestive system, as symbolism and not diagnosis. A doctor is the right guide for any health concern.
Named yogas
Guru Chandala Yoga is the name for this pair, with the caveats above. It is a later and partly regional tradition, and any very fearful description should be treated with caution. Two checks are fair. First, Jupiter’s own dignity: a strong Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer is read as a calmer form. Second, a chart that has Hamsa Yoga or a Raja yoga alongside it is balanced by those. If every planet lies between Rahu and Ketu, the chart may fall under Kaal Sarp Dosha, a separate question.
How the sign changes it
- Sagittarius and Pisces: Jupiter is in its own sign. The teacher is at home, and Rahu’s ambition is put to use.
- Cancer: Jupiter is exalted. A caring, strong mind with a questioning streak.
- Capricorn: Jupiter is debilitated. Ideals meet practical limits; check Neecha Bhanga.
- Taurus and Gemini: schools differ on Rahu’s exaltation, and Rahu is often called strong in one of these signs. Rahu leads and Jupiter tempers it.
- Scorpio: many teachers call Rahu weak here, though schools differ. Depth and a search for meaning are themes.
- Others: read the sign lord for support.
How the house changes it
- 1st: a distinctive and independent presence; Jupiter is strong by direction here.
- 2nd: unusual views about money and family, and persuasive speech.
- 4th: home and schooling that differ from the family norm.
- 5th: unconventional study, creative work and approach to children.
- 7th: partnership with a person from a different background.
- 9th: a questioning approach to belief, teachers and law; a strong place for foreign study.
- 10th: a career that breaks new ground.
- 11th: gains through large networks and new platforms.
- 8th and 12th: research and a search outside the usual path.

Timing
The pair speaks in the Jupiter (16 years) and Rahu (18 years) mahadashas, and in the antardashas inside each other: Jupiter and Rahu and Rahu and Jupiter. The 2026 to 2028 node transit is a background timing, covered in Rahu and Ketu transit 2026 to 2028.
What helps
Choose a teacher you can question openly, write down your own principles before a big decision and look at advice that comes from outside your circle. Any devotional practice is a personal choice and not a requirement.
Checking it in your chart
- Find the sidereal signs of Jupiter and Rahu. If they match, the pair is present.
- Measure the gap. Programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by a degree or two.
- Check Jupiter’s dignity, then the house.
- Look at Ketu opposite and the aspects on the pair.
- Check the dashas.
The planet position calculator gives the sign and degree of Jupiter and Rahu, and the Rahu and Ketu transit calculator shows the nodes’ timing. The other pairs are in the conjunction library.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Guru Chandala Yoga?
It is the name many astrologers give to Jupiter and Rahu in one sign. It describes a questioning mind that leaves convention behind, and its definition varies from teacher to teacher.
↳ Is Guru Chandala Yoga bad?
No. It is a later tradition and many teachers read it as mixed, with a strong Jupiter softening the effect. Many scholars, teachers and innovators have the pairing.
↳ Does it affect education or children?
Jupiter is a karaka for teachers and children, so the 5th and 9th houses are checked as well. Tradition reads it as an unconventional route to study and not as a block.
↳ Does Jupiter's dignity change the reading?
Yes. Many teachers say Jupiter in its own or exalted sign is much less affected, and a weak or combust Jupiter is influenced more. The rest of the chart decides the balance.
↳ Can Rahu and Jupiter be in different signs and still count?
Most teachers require the same sign, and a few also count Rahu aspecting Jupiter. The plain conjunction is the usual meaning of the name.
