In shortMercury and Venus together join the clever mind to taste and charm, and are mutual friends in the classical table. The pair tends to give a pleasant manner, a gift for words, design or the arts and a liking for company. It is often called Lakshmi Narayana Yoga, a later name, and it is a very common conjunction.

Mercury is speech, wit and skill with detail. Venus is beauty, harmony, affection and pleasure. When they share a sign the result is often called one of the pleasantest pairings in the chart: a person who speaks gracefully, notices what looks and sounds right and finds it easy to get on with others. It is also one of the most common conjunctions, because the two planets are never far from the Sun and so are never far from each other.

This page covers how the conjunction forms, what tradition says, and how the sign and house change it. It describes tendencies, not a fate.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: Mercury and Venus occupy the same sidereal sign. Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than about 47 degrees, so the two can be at most about 76 degrees apart. That makes a shared sign far more likely than for most pairs, and a large share of charts have it. The two meet about every four to five months and usually stay in one sign for a few weeks, and retrograde loops can bring them together more than once in a stretch.

Because both stay near the Sun, check whether the Sun is in the same sign. If it is, read this page together with Sun and Mercury and Sun and Venus.

Mutual friends

In the friendship table of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Mercury counts Venus as a friend and Venus counts Mercury as a friend. It is one of the easy relationships in the table, and the pair is read as cooperative: Mercury supplies the craft and the words, and Venus supplies the taste and the warmth.

The usual reading is of someone sociable, witty, pleasant to deal with and drawn to beauty in some form, whether music, writing, design, fashion, cooking or conversation. At its best it gives skill with a light touch. At its worst it can give a love of comfort that puts off hard work, or charm that avoids difficult conversations.

Combustion

Mercury is combust within 14 degrees of the Sun (12 when retrograde) and Venus within 10 degrees (8 when retrograde), on this site’s orbs. Since both stay near the Sun, they are often combust together, and this is one of the most common situations in a chart. Many teachers read a combust planet as weakened, with its independent results absorbed into the Sun’s. Others say Mercury loses little, and some say the Sun’s presence gives the pair an authority of its own.

Orbs differ between authorities, so a borderline case can read differently elsewhere. The gap in degrees is the main thing to check, along with whether either planet is retrograde.

What it points to

Charm and speech. An agreeable voice and manner, humour, and an instinct for the right word. People with the pair are often good in sales, hospitality, public relations or any role that needs tact.

Creative and artistic skill. Writing, music, design, fashion, art direction, photography, film and interior design appear often in traditional lists.

Trade and skill. Both planets are linked to commerce. Retail, trading in luxuries and beauty products, advertising and media are common themes.

Work. Writing, advertising, design, entertainment, hospitality, fashion, beauty, teaching the arts and trade. The house decides the emphasis.

Shadow side. A tendency to coast on charm, to avoid conflict and to spend more than planned. A routine for finishing things helps.

Health. Traditional lists link Mercury with the nerves and skin and Venus with the throat and the reproductive and urinary systems. That is symbolism and not diagnosis, and any concern belongs with a doctor.

Relationships. Conversation and shared taste are the glue. Honest talk about money and expectations keeps things comfortable.

Named yogas

The pairing is widely called Lakshmi Narayana Yoga, after Lakshmi, who is linked to Venus, and Narayana, a name for Vishnu, who is linked to Mercury in the usual explanation. The name is a later tradition: it appears in modern compilations, but it is not a rule that can be pointed to in the oldest texts, so be careful with a page that gives a verse for it. It is generally read as favourable for wealth, skill and reputation, provided the two planets are not weak.

It is more useful to check yogas that involve these planets: Saraswati Yoga for the learned, artistic mind, Bhadra Yoga when Mercury is strong in a kendra, Malavya Yoga when Venus is strong in a kendra, and Lakshmi Yoga, a separate yoga based on the 9th lord.

How the sign changes it

  • Gemini: Mercury is in its own sign. Witty, versatile and talkative, with Venus lending charm.
  • Virgo: Mercury is in its own sign and exalted, and Venus is debilitated. Skill is high and warmth is cautious; check for Neecha Bhanga.
  • Taurus and Libra: Venus is in its own sign. Taste and comfort lead, with Mercury as the craftsman.
  • Pisces: Venus is exalted and Mercury is debilitated. Imagination and tenderness are strong, and logic can be loose; the same check applies.
  • Aquarius and Capricorn: Saturn, the sign lord, counts both as friends. Practical, disciplined creativity.
  • Others: read the sign lord.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a charming, articulate presence with a mobile mind.
  • 2nd: a pleasing voice, a taste for good food and a way with money and trade.
  • 3rd: writing, media, design and short journeys; Mercury is comfortable here.
  • 4th: a comfortable, tasteful home; Venus is strong by direction here.
  • 5th: creativity, romance, teaching and performance.
  • 6th: skill in service and health work; indulgence needs watching.
  • 7th: partnerships and business built on charm and conversation.
  • 10th: a career in design, the media, trade or hospitality.
  • 11th: gains through friends, networks and creative work.
  • 8th, 9th and 12th: private creative work, foreign settings and a quiet taste for study or retreat.

For each planet in each house, read Mercury in the houses and Venus in the houses. The sign articles are Mercury in the zodiac signs and Venus in the zodiac signs.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Mercury mahadasha (17 years) and the Venus mahadasha (20 years), and in the antardashas inside each other: Mercury and Venus and Venus and Mercury. See Mahadasha and antardasha explained.

What helps

A creative practice with a finish line, a budget for pleasures and the habit of having the harder conversation first. Any devotional practice is a personal choice.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of Mercury and Venus. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap and note whether either planet is retrograde.
  3. Check whether the Sun is in the same sign and whether either planet is combust.
  4. Check the dignity of each, then the house and sign lord.
  5. Look at aspects, especially from Jupiter and Saturn, and check the dashas.
