In shortMars and Rahu in one sign is called Angarak Yoga, after Angaraka, a name for Mars. Read calmly, it describes intense, restless drive, a taste for risk and the unconventional, and a temper that needs a channel. Rahu is a node, not a body, so its weight depends on the sign, the house, the gap and the rest of the chart.

Rahu magnifies whatever it touches, and Mars is the planet of energy, courage and the will to fight. Together they are among the most intense pairs in the chart, and online the name Angarak Yoga often arrives with warnings. This page takes the name seriously as a piece of tradition and then asks what it actually describes: a person with enormous drive, a restless appetite for challenge and a need to learn how to use both without burning out.

It describes tendencies and not a fate, and many accomplished people have the pair.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: Mars and Rahu occupy the same sidereal sign. Rahu is not a body. It is one of the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s apparent path, a mathematical point called a node. Rahu moves backwards through the zodiac and takes about 18 months to cross a sign, with Ketu exactly opposite. Mars, going forward, meets Rahu about every 20 months, and about one chart in twelve carries the pair.

If Rahu is with Mars, Ketu is in the 7th sign from that position, so the pair is part of a Rahu and Ketu axis, and Mars looks at Ketu’s side by opposition. Rahu and Ketu are always opposite and never conjoin each other. See Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint for the nodes in general.

What the name means

Angaraka is a name for Mars, meaning “burning coal” or “ember”. Angarak Yoga, or Angarak Dosha, is the label that books and websites give to Mars with Rahu. It is a later tradition and not a rule you can find in the oldest texts, and different books define it slightly differently: some count only the same-sign conjunction, some also count a Rahu aspect on Mars or Mars in an opposite sign, and some extend it to Ketu. Held calmly, it is a description of an unusually hot, forceful and restless pair.

What tradition says

The usual reading is that Rahu amplifies Mars, so courage, competitiveness and temper all rise. Rahu is the planet of the unconventional, the foreign and the new, so the energy often goes to unusual projects, technology, risk or taking on a system.

Common themes include:

  • Bold, sometimes reckless, courage, and a taste for challenge.
  • A temper that flares and is quickly sorry, or that is held in until it explodes.
  • A competitive drive that suits demanding and unconventional fields.
  • A tendency to take risks, and a need for steady counsel from someone who is not afraid to say no.

Classical writers disagree about how strongly a node changes a planet. Many people read the pair as a tough one that rewards self-knowledge.

Combustion

Rahu and Ketu are not treated as combust. The combustion orb for Mars on this site is 17 degrees from the Sun, which applies to the planet with a body, so a Mars close to the Sun is read as in the Sun’s glare whether or not Rahu is with it. The practical question for the node is how close it is to Mars: a gap of a few degrees is a tight, strongly felt pair, and a gap of 20 degrees in the same sign is looser. For the Sun’s part, see Sun and Mars.

What it points to

Drive and restlessness. There is a lot of energy and not always a clear place to put it. Finding a demanding outlet is the main task.

Work. Traditional lists include engineering, technology, aviation, the military and police, sport, surgery and electrical or chemical work, import and export, and competitive business. Rahu adds the foreign and the unconventional.

Courage. A high tolerance for risk, and often a fearless streak in emergencies.

Anger. The shadow side is a hair-trigger temper and impulsive decisions. Physical activity, a pause before replying and a trusted adviser are the usual remedies.

Relationships. Intensity can be exciting and tiring. Saying what is wanted and listening to the answer helps more than winning the argument.

Health and safety. Traditional lists link Mars and Rahu with accidents, burns, fevers and the blood. That is symbolism and not diagnosis. Careful habits around speed, tools and heat are sensible whatever a chart says, and any health concern belongs with a doctor.

Named yogas

The name here is Angarak Yoga (or Angarak Dosha), a later tradition. It is not the same as Mangal Dosha, which concerns Mars in particular houses and has its own rules; see the Mangal Dosha calculator. It is also worth checking the larger picture. If all the planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, the chart may fall under Kaal Sarp Dosha, a separate question. And Ruchaka Yoga applies when Mars is in its own or exalted sign in a kendra, whatever else is nearby.

A balanced way to hold Angarak Yoga is as a theme, not a curse.

How the sign changes it

  • Aries and Scorpio: Mars is in its own sign. Mars keeps its authority, and Rahu adds an edge of risk and ambition.
  • Capricorn: Mars is exalted. Disciplined, practical energy with ambition behind it.
  • Cancer: Mars is debilitated. Drive is emotional and defensive; check for Neecha Bhanga.
  • Taurus and Gemini: schools differ on where Rahu is strong. The pair is often read here as material or mental ambition.
  • Virgo and Aquarius: some teachers give Rahu one of these as its own sign, and schools differ, as discussed in Rahu in the zodiac signs.
  • Others: read the sign lord. A strong, well-placed lord steadies the pair.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: a forceful, restless presence and a bold self-image.
  • 3rd, 6th and 11th: the houses where Rahu is traditionally comfortable and Mars strong. Effort, competition and gains often respond to the pair here.
  • 2nd: blunt, forceful speech and an energetic approach to family and money.
  • 4th: a restless home life and an urge to build or move.
  • 5th: strategy, sport, risk and unusual creative drive.
  • 7th: partnerships need open talk about temper and ambition.
  • 10th: a public, ambitious career; Mars is strong by direction here.
  • 8th and 12th: research, the hidden, long stays abroad and work behind the scenes.
  • 9th: unusual or foreign influences on belief and a questioning attitude towards teachers.

For each planet in each house, read Mars in the houses and Rahu in the houses.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Mars mahadasha (7 years) and the Rahu mahadasha (18 years), and in the antardashas inside each other: Mars and Rahu and Rahu and Mars. Rahu’s transits over the natal Mars are another window; see the 2026 to 2028 Rahu and Ketu transit.

What helps

A demanding but safe outlet for energy, a trusted person who can say no, and a pause before reacting. Any devotional practice is a personal choice.

Checking it in your chart

  1. Find the sidereal signs of Mars and Rahu. If they match, the pair is present.
  2. Measure the gap in degrees.
  3. Check the dignity of Mars, then the house and the sign lord.
  4. Look at Jupiter’s aspect and at Ketu’s position opposite.
  5. Check the dashas.

Different programs use the mean or the true node, which can differ by about a degree or two, so a pair near a boundary can read differently. The planet position calculator and the Rahu and Ketu transit calculator are the places to look. More pairs are in the conjunction library.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Angarak Yoga?

It is the name for Mars with Rahu in one sign. Angaraka is a name for Mars, and the label is a later tradition that books define slightly differently. It is best read as a theme about intense drive and temper.

↳ Is Angarak Dosha serious?

Tradition treats it as a complicating influence, not a verdict. Many accomplished people have it, and its weight depends on the sign, house, the gap in degrees and the rest of the chart.

↳ Is it the same as Mangal Dosha?

No. Mangal Dosha is about Mars in certain houses from the Ascendant, the Moon or Venus, and has its own rules. Angarak Yoga is about Mars with Rahu.

↳ Which careers suit it?

Tradition lists engineering, technology, aviation, sport, the military, surgery and competitive business, especially unusual or foreign work. The house decides the emphasis.

↳ Are Rahu and Ketu ever together?

No. They are always exactly opposite each other, so they never share a sign. If Mars is with Rahu, Ketu is in the 7th sign from that position.
