In shortMars and Venus together join drive to desire and taste, which tends to give a warm, energetic, magnetic nature with strong feelings and a love of beauty and pleasure. They are neutral to each other in the classical table, so the reading depends on the sign, the house, the gap between them and whether either planet is combust.

Venus is love, beauty, pleasure and harmony. Mars is energy, appetite and the will to pursue. Together in one sign they are often described as the chart’s most passionate pair: warmth and attraction on one side, directness and drive on the other. It is the pairing many people look up when they want to understand how they love and what they chase.

This page covers how the conjunction forms, what tradition says, and how the sign and house change it. It describes tendencies, and no part of it is a prediction about any relationship.

How the conjunction forms

The rule: Mars and Venus occupy the same sidereal sign. Venus goes through a sign in about a month on average, a little more or less depending on its retrograde loops, and Mars takes about 22 months to go round the zodiac. Venus catches Mars roughly every eleven months, and the pair stay together in one sign for a few weeks. About one chart in twelve carries it.

Neutral to each other

In the friendship table of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Mars and Venus are neutral to one another. Neither is a friend or an enemy, which is why the pair has no fixed reputation: it takes on the sign and the house. They do have a natural link, though. Mars is the planet of desire and action and Venus the planet of what is desired, so the combination often reads as strong feeling, put into action.

Traditional descriptions are of a person who is attractive, energetic, expressive and quick to fall for people and projects, with a taste for beauty, style and the good things of life. The shadow side is impulsiveness in matters of the heart or the purse.

Combustion

Venus is combust within 10 degrees of the Sun (8 when retrograde) and Mars within 17 degrees, on this site’s orbs. Venus never travels more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so it is often near it, and when the Sun, Venus and Mars share a sign the Sun’s glare matters. Many teachers read a combust planet as having its independent results absorbed into the Sun’s. Others hold that Venus loses little in some placements. For the Sun’s part, read Sun and Venus and Sun and Mars.

Orbs differ between authorities, so a borderline case can read differently elsewhere.

What it points to

Warmth and magnetism. Feeling and drive together give a presence that others notice. Charm and a competitive streak often sit side by side.

The arts and design. Venus gives the eye and Mars the energy to produce, so dance, performance, fashion, design, cosmetics, cooking, and sport with an element of style all appear in traditional lists.

Relationships. Strong feelings, a wish for a lively partner and, in some charts, a pull towards intensity. Traditional writers link the pair with desire and the pursuit of pleasure, and say that the lesson is steadiness. The 7th house and its lord say more about partnership than this pair alone. Mars in certain houses also raises the separate question of Mangal Dosha, which has its own rules; see the Mangal Dosha calculator.

Money and vehicles. Venus rules comforts, vehicles and luxuries, and Mars rules property and effort, so the pair is sometimes read for earning through hard work and spending on pleasure.

Shadow side. Impulsive spending, jealousy or restlessness, and a quick temper when affection is not returned. A pause before big decisions is the practical remedy.

Health. Traditional lists link Venus with the reproductive and urinary systems, and Mars with blood and heat. That is symbolism and not diagnosis, and any health concern belongs with a doctor.

Named yogas

There is no widely accepted classical name for the plain Mars and Venus conjunction. Some modern writers use labels for it, but they are conveniences, not rules in the older texts. It is more useful to check yogas that involve either planet: Ruchaka Yoga for Mars strong in a kendra and Malavya Yoga for Venus strong in a kendra, as well as Dhana yoga links where the lords of the 2nd and 11th are involved.

How the sign changes it

  • Aries and Scorpio: Mars is in its own sign and Venus is a guest. Drive leads, and affection is intense and direct.
  • Taurus and Libra: Venus is in its own sign. Taste and comfort lead, and Mars adds persistence.
  • Pisces: Venus is exalted. Tender, artistic and imaginative, with Mars giving it energy.
  • Capricorn: Mars is exalted. Disciplined effort, with Venus bringing polish.
  • Cancer: Mars is debilitated. Drive is emotional and defensive; check for Neecha Bhanga.
  • Virgo: Venus is debilitated. Discernment can turn into criticism in matters of the heart; the same check applies.
  • Others: read the sign lord.

How the house changes it

  • 1st: an attractive, forceful presence, with a strong sense of style.
  • 2nd: a pleasing voice, a taste for good food and a drive to earn.
  • 3rd: artistic effort, performance, writing and courage in self-expression.
  • 4th: a lively home, a love of comfort, vehicles and property; Venus is strong by direction here.
  • 5th: creativity, romance, sport and the arts.
  • 6th: work in service or competition, and a need to watch overspending and health habits.
  • 7th: partnerships are central and strongly felt; both partners may need to talk about expectations.
  • 10th: a career that involves design, performance, the beauty trade or leadership; Mars is strong by direction.
  • 11th: friends, gains and social networks.
  • 8th and 12th: private matters, intensity kept out of sight, travel and foreign settings.

For each planet in each house, read Mars in the houses and Venus in the houses. The sign articles are Mars in the zodiac signs and Venus in the zodiac signs.

Timing

The pair speaks in the Mars mahadasha (7 years) and the Venus mahadasha (20 years), and in the antardashas inside each other: Mars and Venus and Venus and Mars. See Mahadasha and antardasha explained.

What helps

A creative outlet with some physical energy in it, honest talk in relationships, and a waiting period before big purchases and big commitments. Any devotional practice is a personal choice.

  3. Check whether the Sun is in the same sign and whether either planet is combust.
  4. Check the dignity of each, then the house and sign lord.
  5. Look at aspects, especially from Jupiter and Saturn, and check the dashas.
