In shortThe Moon Mahadasha lasts 10 years, sits between the Sun and Mars periods in the Vimshottari cycle, and centres on the mind, emotional security, home and mother. How it goes depends on the Moon's sign, house, phase and nakshatra in your chart, and on the planets joined to it.

The Moon Mahadasha is the fourth period in the 120-year Vimshottari cycle, and for many people it is the decade in which life becomes more personal. The Sun period before it tends to be about identity, status and authority. The Moon period turns the lens inward and toward people: how safe you feel, where you belong, who you care for, and what your mind does when nobody is watching.

It lasts 10 years, which makes it a medium-length period, and it is the only Mahadasha ruled by the fastest-moving body in the chart. That is worth keeping in mind. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, and the period it rules tends to show a similar sensitivity to mood, circumstances and company. People look it up because the decade often brings changes to home, family and routine, and they want to know what to expect.

At a glance

Detail Moon Mahadasha
Length 10 years
Place in the cycle 4th of 9 Mahadashas in the Vimshottari order
Comes after Sun Mahadasha (6 years)
Followed by Mars Mahadasha (7 years)
Natural significations Mind, emotions, mother, home, comfort, public, nourishment, memory, sleep
Sign ownership Cancer (own sign), exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio
Nakshatras ruled Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
Yogakaraka for None: the Moon rules only one house for every ascendant, so it never combines a kendra and a trikona

The Vimshottari order is Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years, adding up to 120. The Mahadasha and Antardasha explained guide shows how that order is fixed by the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. There is a pleasant symmetry here: if you were born with the Moon in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana, your very first Mahadasha was the Moon’s, and the whole cycle began with it.

What the period tends to bring

The Moon is the natural significator of the mind (manas in Sanskrit), so this Mahadasha tends to put feelings, habits of thought and inner security in the foreground. It is not a period of dramatic outer action in the way Mars or Rahu can be. It is a period in which what you feel shapes what you do.

Home and mother. The Moon signifies the mother, the house you live in and the feeling of being at home. During the decade people often move house, renovate, settle a family property question, or go through a change in their relationship with their mother or a mother figure. Whether this is joyful or demanding depends on the chart, not on the Moon alone.

Public and popularity. Classical texts link the Moon with the public at large. Careers that deal with people directly, such as hospitality, care, food, teaching, retail, media and public-facing service, often get more attention in this period when the Moon is well placed.

Emotional life. Sensitivity rises. Moods can follow circumstances more closely, for better and worse. Many people find the decade rewards building a steady routine, good sleep and emotionally honest relationships, because the Moon responds to regularity.

Travel and change. The Moon is a moving planet, so the period often includes travel, changes of residence and a general sense of flow. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the foundational Vimshottari text, describes the dasha results of each planet as depending on its strength and placement, and that principle is the useful one here: the same Moon gives very different decades to different charts.

Nourishment and comfort. Food, water, cooking, caring for others and creature comforts are Moon matters. Some people find their relationship with food, weight or daily habits becomes a live topic. For any health concern, please see a doctor; astrology is a lens for reflection, not a diagnosis.

When it goes well and when it asks more

The general principle is simple: the Mahadasha lord gives results through its own strength, its house, its sign and the planets connected to it, and through the houses it rules. Nothing is guaranteed by the planet’s name alone.

Signs of a supportive Moon.

  • The Moon is waxing (Shukla paksha, the bright half of the month), especially from about the seventh day after the new moon toward full. A full or nearly full Moon is treated as a strong natural benefic.
  • It sits in Cancer, Taurus, or another friendly sign, or is otherwise well supported. The Moon in Taurus is exalted, and in Cancer it is at home.
  • It is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (1st, 5th or 9th), or in the 11th, where most planets do well.
  • Jupiter aspects or sits with it, forming the combination known as Gaja Kesari Yoga, or Mars connects with it in Chandra Mangala Yoga, which many astrologers link with earning drive.
  • The Moon is not afflicted by close conjunction with Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, and is not too near the Sun, since a very close Moon loses light.
  • Its navamsa (the nine-fold divisional chart, which shows the planet’s inner strength) is also dignified.

Signs the period may ask more.

  • The Moon is waning and close to the new moon, or debilitated in Scorpio without cancellation.
  • It sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant, or is heavily hemmed in by malefics. The Kemadruma Yoga page explains one classical pattern that some astrologers watch for, along with the many cancellations that soften it.
  • It is tightly joined to Rahu, sometimes called a grahana (eclipse) pattern, or to Saturn, which can make the mind heavier.

Even in the harder cases, the Moon Mahadasha is usually about emotional work rather than outer hardship. Steady routine, honest conversation and good sleep help more than any remedy.

The nine antardashas

Each Mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, the sub-periods, in the same Vimshottari order, starting from the Mahadasha lord itself. The length of each equals Mahadasha years times the sub-lord’s years divided by 120. In the Moon Mahadasha, all nine together add up to 10 years. Each antardasha below links to its own page with the natural relationship between the two planets, the houses they rule for each ascendant and practical guidance.

Antardasha Length What it tends to emphasise
Moon-Moon about 10 months The tone of the whole decade; mind, home, mother
Moon-Mars about 7 months Energy, property, courage, quicker feelings
Moon-Rahu about 1 year, 6 months Restlessness, ambition, unconventional paths, foreign links
Moon-Jupiter about 1 year, 4 months Growth, guidance, optimism, family expansion
Moon-Saturn about 1 year, 7 months Responsibility, discipline, slow and steady effort
Moon-Mercury about 1 year, 5 months Learning, communication, trade, a busy mind
Moon-Ketu about 7 months Withdrawal, detachment, inner reflection
Moon-Venus about 1 year, 8 months Relationships, comforts, creativity, home beauty
Moon-Sun about 6 months Identity, authority, closing the decade

Two things stand out. First, the Moon’s own opening sub-period (about 10 months) sets the tone but is short. Second, the longest sub-period is Moon-Venus at about 20 months, followed by Moon-Saturn at about 19 months and Moon-Rahu at about 18 months, so a large share of the decade runs through these three. If you are checking a specific date, the antardasha matters as much as the Mahadasha.

By ascendant

The houses the Moon rules depend on the ascendant, and the ruled house colours what the decade is about. The Moon rules a single house for every ascendant, since it owns only Cancer.

Ascendant House ruled by Moon What the decade tends to emphasise
Aries 4th Home, mother, property and inner peace take centre stage
Taurus 3rd Courage, skills, short journeys, siblings and communication
Gemini 2nd Family, speech, savings and eating habits
Cancer 1st Self, body and temperament; the whole chart takes on the Moon’s tone
Leo 12th Rest, expenses, foreign lands, sleep and retreat
Virgo 11th Gains, networks, friends and fulfilment of wishes
Libra 10th Career, public standing and visibility
Scorpio 9th Fortune, belief, teachers and long journeys
Sagittarius 8th Transformation, research, hidden matters and inner depth
Capricorn 7th Partnerships, marriage and dealings with the public
Aquarius 6th Service, routine, health habits, debts and competition
Pisces 5th Children, creativity, learning and romance

The Moon’s house placement matters as much as the house it rules. Read the placement in Moon in all 12 houses and the sign in Moon in all zodiac signs alongside the table above.

Practices that help

These are gentle supports, not a cure. They suit the Moon’s nature, which is to respond to calm and regularity.

  • Mantra. Many people chant “Om Chandraya Namah” or “Om Som Somaya Namah” on Mondays, the Moon’s weekday, using a count of 11 or 108 if that feels right.
  • Charity on Mondays. Offering rice, milk or white sweets to someone who needs them, or helping an older woman in your life, is the classic gesture.
  • Routine. Regular sleep, regular meals and time near water or greenery suit a planet that governs the mind. A fixed bedtime is one of the most practical Moon remedies.
  • Mother and home. Looking after your mother or mother figures, and keeping your living space clean and peaceful, is traditionally the most direct way to honour the Moon.
  • Good company. The Moon takes on the tone of those around it. Time with calm, kind people helps more than people expect.
  • Gemstone. Some astrologers suggest a pearl for a well-placed Moon, but only after a full chart reading. It is not something to buy on the strength of a general article, and it is not required.

How to find your dates

The start date of your Moon Mahadasha depends on where the Moon sat in its nakshatra at your birth, because the Vimshottari dasha is counted from that point. Two people born on the same day can be in entirely different periods. Use the free kundali tool on the tools page to see your Vimshottari dashas with exact dates, then come back to read the matching antardasha page. The neighbouring periods are worth reading too: Sun Mahadasha comes first, and Mars Mahadasha follows.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Is the Moon Mahadasha good?

It depends on the Moon's strength and placement in your chart, not on the planet alone. A waxing, well-placed Moon usually gives a supportive decade of emotional security, family and public goodwill. A weak or afflicted Moon asks for more attention to sleep, routine and relationships.

↳ How long is the Moon Mahadasha?

It lasts 10 years. It follows the Sun Mahadasha and is followed by the Mars Mahadasha. If it began at birth, you may have entered it partway through, so the first period could be shorter than 10 years.

↳ What should I expect in the Moon Mahadasha?

Expect the focus to move toward mind, home, mother, family and belonging. Many people see changes in residence or family circumstances, more sensitivity to mood, and more attention from the public if the Moon is well placed.

↳ Which antardasha is best in the Moon Mahadasha?

There is no single best one, since it depends on where each planet sits in your chart. Jupiter and Venus sub-periods are often comfortable when those planets are well placed, while Saturn, Rahu and Ketu sub-periods are often more demanding but can also build lasting results.

↳ Does the Moon Mahadasha affect the mind?

The Moon is the natural significator of the mind, so feelings and thought patterns often become more noticeable. This is a tendency, not a diagnosis. If anxiety or low mood is troubling you, please speak to a doctor or counsellor as well.

↳ Can remedies change the Moon Mahadasha?

Remedies in Vedic tradition are steadying practices rather than guarantees. Mantra, Monday charity and a calm routine can help you meet the period with more ease, but the result still depends on the whole chart and on your own choices.
