Only letters A to Z are used. Spaces separate the words.

Free. The first time, we ask for your email and send a 6-digit code to confirm it. The name you type stays in your browser: it is not sent to us.

Type a name above and choose a number from 1 to 9. The tool works out the Chaldean total of your spelling, then tries small changes that keep the sound, at most two in the whole name, and lists the spellings whose total reduces to the number you chose. Each spelling is shown with its working and with the changes made, so you can see exactly how it differs from yours.

What changes are tried

Only changes that leave the name sounding much the same are used: i and ee (Mina and Meena), ai and ay (Jai and Jay), ph and f, k and c before a, o or u, u and oo, a and aa, ch and chh, x and ks, and a single consonant between two vowels made double or a double made single. A letter is never swapped for an unrelated one, so Anita can become Anitta or Aneeta, but never Anika.

You can also choose which words may change. Many people want to leave a surname exactly as it is, and the tool has an option for that, and another for changing only the last word.

How the total is worked out

The Chaldean table gives A, I, J, Q and Y the value 1, B, K and R the value 2, C, G, L and S the value 3, D, M and T the value 4, E, H, N and X the value 5, U, V and W the value 6, O and Z the value 7, and F and P the value 8. No letter is 9. The values are added and reduced to a single digit, and the planet for that digit follows the Indian scheme: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.

For Priya, P is 8, R is 2, I is 1, Y is 1 and A is 1, which makes 13, and 1 plus 3 is 4. Asking for 5, the tool finds Priyaa, where the doubled A adds 1 to make 14, and 1 plus 4 is 5. It also finds the other nearby spellings that give 5, if any, and lists the ones with the fewest changes first.

What to do with the result

Please use it lightly. A spelling is a personal choice and often a legal fact: your birth certificate, passport, school records and bank accounts carry the spelling you were registered with, and changing it officially takes time and paperwork. We do not suggest changing a name or its spelling for numerological reasons. This tool is better suited to choosing a spelling for something new, such as a brand name, a pen name or a baby’s name, or to seeing for yourself how much a single letter moves the total.

Seeing that move is the useful part. Priya and Priyaa are read in the same way in speech, yet the tradition would give them different numbers, which shows how fragile a name number is. The name number page explains the same point. If a name is for a child, the baby names by nakshatra section uses the classical method, which starts from the birth star and not from a total.

What it cannot tell you

No number will bring luck, money or success to a person who changes the spelling of a name, and the tool makes no such claim. For the number of a name as it is, use the name number calculator, and for a business name the business name calculator. The numerology hub covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Can changing the spelling of my name change my luck?

There is no evidence that it can, and numerology does not promise luck or money. A name number is a traditional reflective reading, which is why we do not suggest changing a name or its spelling because of it.

↳ Which spelling changes does the tool use?

Only sound-alike ones: i and ee, ai and ay, ph and f, k and c, u and oo, a and aa, ch and chh, x and ks, and single or double consonants between vowels. At most two changes are made across the whole name.

↳ Why does the tool sometimes find nothing?

A name has only a limited number of natural spellings, and not every number can be reached with sound-alike changes. That is an ordinary result and no cause for concern.

↳ Does this change my legal name?

No. Nothing the tool shows has any effect on your registered name. Legal name changes follow their own official process and are not something a number should decide.

↳ Is my name stored?

No. The name and the spellings stay in your browser and are not sent to us. Only the one-time email check, where we send you a 6-digit code, uses our server.
