About this piece
A panchaloha bronze Durga on her lion, cast by the lost wax method (madhuchista vidhana) in Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu. Panchaloha means an alloy of five metals. The goddess has many arms and sits above the lion on a flat rectangular base.
The photos show a bright golden bronze with the arms and ornaments finely cast. The piece is 23 cm (9 in) tall and weighs 3.2 kg, a good size for a home altar.
How it is used
Many homes place a Durga image on the main altar, particularly for Navaratri, with a lamp and flowers in front. It also suits a wide shelf in a puja room.
Looking after it
- Dust with a soft dry cloth.
- Avoid harsh polish, which can mark the finish.
