About this piece
A mala of black karungali beads, the Tamil name for ebony wood, set with sterling silver according to the seller. The photos show round black beads with small silver-coloured fittings between them, on a long loop, and no tassel.
It is 61 cm (24 inches) long and weighs only 8 g, so it is light to wear. The seller calls it genuine and certified and says a certificate comes with it.
How it is used
A mala is traditionally held and counted bead by bead while repeating a mantra, or worn around the neck. Karungali is the Tamil name for ebony, and ebony malas are used in several traditions.
Looking after it
- Keep dry and wipe with a soft cloth.
- Keep silver away from perfume and chemicals, which can tarnish it.
