Amavasya is the new Moon day, the last tithi of the dark half of the month. It comes once a month, 12 or 13 times a year. Many families use it for quiet remembrance of ancestors, with water, sesame and food offered in their memory, and for charity and a holy bath. Some Amavasyas carry their own festivals, and the Diwali Lakshmi Puja is performed on an Amavasya evening.

The date rule used here is the civil day on which Amavasya is in force at Aparahna, the afternoon, which is the time traditionally used for rites for ancestors. Some calendars also list a day on which Amavasya is in force at sunrise, for a morning bath and giving, and that can be the day before. The tables show the day and the time the tithi begins and ends on the local clock, with a note when it starts on the previous day or ends on the next.

Why do cities differ? The new Moon is one instant worldwide, but the civil date is local. A city in Australia is in the next day when a city in North America reaches the new Moon, and the tithi begins and ends at different clock times. In some months that is enough to change the day.

A calm note: remembering the people who came before you needs no ritual perfection, and a moment of thought and a glass of water offered with care is enough. The tables below cover five cities for both years. Every one of the 49 cities has its own page with all Amavasyas.

Frequently asked questions

↳ How many Amavasya days are there in 2026 and 2027?

In New York there are 12 in 2026 and 13 in 2027. Across New York, London, Toronto, Sydney and New Delhi the count in 2026 runs from 12 to 12, because a tithi can fall on the edge of a year or be skipped at sunrise in one city and not another.

↳ When is the first Amavasya of 2027?

The first in 2027 is Darsha Pausha Amavasya: New York Thursday 7 January (Amavasya tithi 12:44 pm (previous day) to 3:24 pm); London Thursday 7 January (Amavasya tithi 5:44 pm (previous day) to 8:24 pm); New Delhi Thursday 7 January (Amavasya tithi 11:14 pm (previous day) to 1:54 am (next day)).

↳ Is Amavasya on the same day in New York, London and New Delhi?

Often, but not always. In 2026, 4 of 12 Amavasya dates that all five cities list have the same calendar date in New York, London, Toronto, Sydney and New Delhi. On the others at least one city is a day apart, because the new Moon tithi begins and ends at different local clock times and dates in each city.

↳ Which day do I keep Amavasya, the day it starts or the day it ends?

This page lists the day on which Amavasya is in force in the afternoon (Aparahna), which is the usual test for rites for ancestors. Some people also bathe and give on the day on which Amavasya is in force at sunrise, which can be the day before. For Darsha Magha Amavasya in 2026, New York lists Sunday 18 January (Amavasya tithi 1:34 pm (previous day) to 2:52 pm) and Sydney lists Sunday 18 January (Amavasya tithi 5:34 am to 6:52 am (next day)).
