About this piece
A seated Mahavira, the twenty-fourth Tirthankara, hand carved from Makrana marble, the white stone of Rajasthan that is also used for temple images. The photos show a calm face with painted eyes and a red mark on the forehead, and hands resting in the lap.
At 28 cm tall and 6 kg it is sized for a home shrine shelf rather than a large altar.
How it is used
Many Jain homes keep a Tirthankara image in a small, clean shrine and begin the day there with a lamp, a short stotra or a few minutes of samayik.
Looking after it
- Dust with a soft dry cloth.
- Keep away from oil and turmeric, which stain white marble.
- Wipe spills at once with a damp cloth, then dry.
