About this piece
Parshvanatha is the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism, shown with a canopy of serpent hoods over his head. This white marble statue shows him seated in meditation, with coloured details: a dark hood with a gold edge, painted eyes and a gold chest mark.
It is 13.5 cm (5.3 inch) tall, 7.5 cm wide and weighs just 220 g, so it suits a small shrine, a desk or a travel altar.
How it is used
Many Jain homes keep a Tirthankara image in a small, clean shrine. Parshvanatha is recognised by the serpent hoods, and a small marble figure like this suits a shelf, a desk or a travel altar.
Looking after it
- Dust with a soft dry cloth.
- Keep away from oil and turmeric, which stain white marble.
