In shortKaal Sarp Dosha is a chart where all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn sit on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis. It is a later concept, not found in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and definitions differ. The twelve types are named by the house Rahu occupies from the Lagna, from Anant in the 1st house to Sheshnag in the 12th.

Few phrases in popular astrology carry as much worry as Kaal Sarp Dosha. The words mean roughly “the serpent of time”, and a report that prints them can make an ordinary evening feel heavy. This section is here to take the heaviness out. It explains what the condition is, how it is worked out, how the twelve named types differ, and where the idea sits in the history of Vedic astrology, with an even hand and without a remedy for sale at the end.

Everything in these pages describes themes and tendencies. None of it is a prediction, and none of it needs fear.

What the condition is

Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes, the points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path. They are always exactly opposite each other, so together they draw a line across the chart that splits the zodiac into two halves. If the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all fall inside one half, with nothing on the other side, the chart is said to have Kaal Sarp. The picture is of a serpent whose head is Rahu and whose tail is Ketu, holding every planet in its coil. For the nodes themselves, see Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint.

The condition is easy to test because it is purely geometric. Our Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator does exactly this test from your birth details and names the type when it forms.

What we want you to know first

Four plain facts, stated early because they change how the rest should be read.

  1. Kaal Sarp is a later concept. It is not described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or in the other main classical texts that most teachers rely on, such as Phaladeepika and Saravali. The name became widespread in print in the twentieth century. Classical authors did write about the nodes and about planets hemmed between malefics, and that is a different idea.
  2. Definitions differ. Some teachers require all seven planets strictly inside the axis. Others accept a planet that sits just past a node’s degree. Some count only one of the two halves of the zodiac, while others count both. Many call a chart with one or two planets outside “partial” (Ardha Kaal Sarp), and some disregard partial cases altogether.
  3. A planet joined with a node can change the reading. Whether a planet in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu counts as inside or outside depends on its degree against the node, and schools argue about it.
  4. Many accomplished people have it. A sizeable number of charts carry the pattern, and it is found in the lives of people of every kind, including settled, successful and happy ones.

Two further points sit in our own tool and are worth saying openly. The calculator measures by longitude, not by sign, so a planet in Rahu’s sign can still be counted outside if it lies behind the node. It also tests the half of the zodiac running forward from Rahu to Ketu, and calls a chart “partial” if one or two planets are outside.

How the twelve types are named

Once a complete Kaal Sarp forms, the usual practice is to name the type by the house Rahu occupies, counted from the Lagna (ascendant). Ketu then sits in the 7th house from that. Our calculator uses this rule and these twelve names, in this order:

Rahu in Type Ketu in
1st house Anant 7th house
2nd house Kulik 8th house
3rd house Vasuki 9th house
4th house Shankhpal 10th house
5th house Padma 11th house
6th house Mahapadma 12th house
7th house Takshak 1st house
8th house Karkotak 2nd house
9th house Shankhachud 3rd house
10th house Ghatak 4th house
11th house Vishdhar 5th house
12th house Sheshnag 6th house

Because the Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, the type depends on a reasonably accurate birth time, even when the question of whether the pattern forms at all does not. A partial chart is not given a type by our calculator, since the twelve names classically describe the complete form.

The twelve types in brief

  • Anant: the self and the body, with partnership across the axis.
  • Kulik: family, speech, food and savings.
  • Vasuki: effort, courage, siblings and communication.
  • Shankhpal: home, mother, inner peace and property.
  • Padma: creativity, study, children and the mind.
  • Mahapadma: daily work, health habits, service and rest.
  • Takshak: partnership, marriage and close dealings with others.
  • Karkotak: change, shared resources and the hidden.
  • Shankhachud: fortune, teachers, belief and long journeys.
  • Ghatak: career, standing and public work.
  • Vishdhar: gains, networks, ambitions and friends.
  • Sheshnag: solitude, sleep, retreat and life far from home.

Each page also says what the Rahu and Ketu house pages on this site add, so you can read the type and the placement side by side.

Reading it in proportion

A Kaal Sarp reading is one geometric fact about a chart. It says nothing about the strength of the Lagna, the condition of Jupiter, the Moon’s phase, the dignity of each planet or the running dasha. A chart with a well-placed Jupiter aspecting the Lagna or the Moon, or benefics in the kendras, is usually read as softening the pattern considerably, and the calculator lists these factors for exactly that reason. The dasha of Rahu or Ketu is the period when the nodes speak loudest, and the Rahu Mahadasha and Ketu Mahadasha pages cover those years.

Do not confuse Kaal Sarp with Sarpa Yoga, a different, classical pattern about malefic planets in the kendras. The names sound alike and the rules are unrelated. A node joined with a single planet is covered in the conjunctions library.

Calm practice, nothing to buy

Where tradition suggests anything for Rahu and Ketu, it begins with conduct: regular sleep and meals, honest work, keeping promises, kindness to elders and to those who work for you, and time outdoors. Many families observe Nag Panchami, the festival of the serpent deities, with simple offerings and prayer at home. None of this needs a priest, a ceremony or a fee, and none of it is a cure for a chart. If a person or a website says a Kaal Sarp puja must be bought to avoid harm, you can safely set that aside. The only thing we offer is the reading itself.

If a pattern in your life worries you, a sleep problem, low mood, money pressure, a relationship difficulty, please speak to a doctor, counsellor, financial adviser or lawyer as the case may be. A chart is not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Is Kaal Sarp Dosha mentioned in the classical texts?

It is not found in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or in the other main classical works. It is a later concept that became popular in print in recent times. Many respected astrologers use it with caution and some do not use it at all.

↳ How is the type of Kaal Sarp chosen?

By the house Rahu occupies counted from the Lagna. Rahu in the 1st house gives Anant, in the 2nd Kulik, and so on in order to Sheshnag for the 12th house. The type is only named for a complete Kaal Sarp.

↳ What is partial Kaal Sarp?

It is the name for a chart where one or two of the seven planets fall outside the Rahu and Ketu axis. Our calculator grades it as partial and milder, and does not assign a named type to it. Some teachers ignore partial cases altogether.

↳ Do I need an expensive puja for Kaal Sarp?

No. This site sells no pujas and does not believe the placement calls for one. Tradition offers simple conduct and devotion, and many accomplished people with the pattern lead ordinary, steady lives.

↳ Can my Kaal Sarp type change with the birth time?

The type can, because it depends on the Lagna, which moves to a new sign about every two hours. Whether the condition forms at all depends only on the planets and the nodes, which move far more slowly.

↳ Which tool shows my type?

The Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator on this site checks all seven planets against the Rahu and Ketu axis and names the type where it forms. It is linked from the top of this page and from every type page.
