Vasuki is the third of the twelve named types, and the name carries one of the best-known stories in Hindu tradition. It is found when Rahu occupies the 3rd house, the house of effort and initiative, so the pattern speaks about how much of life is made by one’s own hand. The Kaal Sarp hub gives the wider context.
What the name means
Vasuki is the king of the nagas. In the account of the churning of the ocean, told in the Mahabharata and the Puranas, the gods and the asuras use Vasuki as the rope wound around Mount Mandara, and in the Bhagavad Gita Krishna says that among serpents he is Vasuki. This is the same churning episode in which the demon Svarbhanu drank the nectar and the story of Rahu begins. The name is therefore tied to one of the oldest serpent stories, and it says nothing grim about a chart.
The rule
A complete Kaal Sarp has all of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn on one side of the nodal axis, in the half running forward from Rahu to Ketu. It is Vasuki when Rahu sits in the 3rd house from the Lagna and Ketu in the 9th. The seven planets are packed into roughly the 4th to the 8th houses.
Our Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator applies this rule and shows Rahu’s house. The count rests on the Lagna, so a reliable birth time matters for naming the type.
The axis: effort and fortune
The 3rd house stands for courage, siblings, short journeys, skills of the hand, writing and speaking. The 9th stands for fortune, a father or teacher, belief, higher learning and long journeys. The nodes on this line set the self-made against the inherited. Tradition says a person with Vasuki may find that success follows deliberate effort more than luck, and that guidance from a teacher or father may feel complicated, or arrive late, or in an unusual form.
The pages on the placements are Rahu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 9th house.
Themes tradition associates with Vasuki
- Bold, restless initiative and a willingness to try what others avoid.
- Skill in communication, media, technology or travel, as Rahu in the 3rd is often said to favour.
- A mixed or distant relationship with siblings, or a sibling who plays a large part in life.
- A questioning attitude to inherited belief, with faith that is arrived at personally.
- Luck that is felt as something earned.
A reader should keep in mind that the 3rd house is classically a growth house, an upachaya, where malefic influences such as Rahu are traditionally said to improve with time. This is one reason many astrologers read Vasuki more kindly than the name of a serpent king might suggest.
What the label leaves out
Vasuki says nothing of the 3rd lord, the sign of Rahu, aspects to the 3rd or 9th houses, or the dashas. It cannot say whether the sibling theme is joyful or difficult, nor whether faith will be warm or sceptical. Teachers who follow the texts read those directly.
Partial forms and softening factors
If one or two planets sit outside the axis, the chart is partial in our calculator and no type is given. Teachers differ over whether a planet very close to a node counts as inside. Jupiter’s aspect on the Lagna or Moon, benefics in kendras or trikonas and a strong 3rd lord are the usual softeners.
When the pattern is likely to be felt
Teachers who use the type say its themes come forward during a dasha or antardasha of Rahu or Ketu, or of the 3rd lord. A person might then start a venture, travel more, or find their voice in writing or speech. The helpful reply is to put the energy into one project at a time, and to keep brothers, sisters and friends informed. The Rahu Mahadasha page covers these years in more detail.
How to read it in order
First look at the 3rd lord and Mars, the natural significator of courage, then at the sign and nakshatra of Rahu. Look also at the 9th lord and Jupiter for the fortune side of the axis. A strong Mars and a well-placed 9th lord describe a self-made but supported life, whatever label sits on top.
Steady habits
For a 3rd house pattern the useful discipline is finishing things: one skill practised daily, one piece of writing or craft completed each month, and honest contact with brothers and sisters rather than waiting for them to call. For the 9th, it helps to seek a teacher or mentor in a field you care about, free of the pressure to adopt anyone’s whole system. Nag Panchami is the traditional day to remember Vasuki and the other serpent kings, and a simple prayer is enough.

Frequently asked questions
↳ What is Vasuki Kaal Sarp Dosha?
It is the type of complete Kaal Sarp with Rahu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 9th. It is named for Vasuki, the king of the nagas in the churning of the ocean story.
↳ Is Vasuki Kaal Sarp a difficult type?
The texts do not rank the types. The 3rd house is a house of growth in which Rahu is traditionally said to do well, so many astrologers read this type as a driven, self-made one.
↳ Does it affect luck or my relationship with my father?
Tradition links the 9th house to fortune and a father or teacher, so these are themes to reflect on. They are not predictions, and the 9th lord and Jupiter tell you more than the type name.
↳ Is Vasuki named in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra?
The serpent is named in the Mahabharata and Puranas, but Kaal Sarp Dosha and its twelve types are not part of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. They come from a later tradition.
↳ Do I have to buy a remedy?
No. We sell no remedies, and nothing here depends on one. Steady habits and simple prayer are the traditional starting point.
