In shortTakshak Kaal Sarp is the type named when a complete Kaal Sarp has Rahu in the 7th house and Ketu in the 1st. Tradition ties it to partnership, marriage and close dealings with others, set against the self. It is a later concept, not in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

Takshak is the seventh type of Kaal Sarp, the mirror of Anant: Rahu now stands in the 7th house and Ketu in the Lagna. Because the 7th house is marriage, this is the type that most often turns up in searches about weddings, and so it is the one most often wrapped in fear. We will be careful and plain. The Kaal Sarp hub sets the type among the twelve.

What the name means

Takshaka is a great serpent of the Mahabharata. In the epic’s opening books the king Parikshit is bitten by Takshaka, and his son Janamejaya then holds a great sacrifice to destroy the serpents, a rite that is stopped by the sage Astika. The word takshaka also means a carpenter or one who carves. The story is a tale about a curse and a son’s anger, and it is not a statement about marriage, so its connection with the 7th house should not be pressed.

The rule

A complete Kaal Sarp requires the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all to lie in the half of the zodiac running forward from Rahu to Ketu. It is Takshak when Rahu is in the 7th house from the Lagna, which puts Ketu in the 1st. The planets then lie in roughly the 8th to the 12th houses.

That puts every planet in the houses of change, fortune, career, gains and loss. Our Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator names Takshak under this rule. A birth time that is accurate to within a few minutes matters here, because Ketu sits in the very sign that is rising.

The axis: you and the other

Rahu in the 7th and Ketu in the 1st reverse the Anant picture. The 7th house is spouse, partners, contracts, clients and open opponents. The 1st is the self. Tradition says a person with Takshak may attract strong or unusual partners, throw themselves into relationships, and sometimes lose sight of their own preferences in the process, while Ketu in the Lagna gives a detached, self-contained quality.

The site pages on the placements are Rahu in the 7th house and Ketu in the 1st house.

Themes tradition associates with Takshak

  • Partnerships that feel fated, unusual or cross a boundary of background, culture or place.
  • A strong learning curve in marriage, which tradition says rewards honest speech and patience.
  • Business partnerships that need clear written terms.
  • A reserved or private nature that is not always understood by others.
  • Deep loyalty once trust is settled.

None of these is a prediction. Many people with the pattern are happily married, and some are happily single.

About marriage and the chart

Marriage in Vedic astrology is read from the 7th house and its lord, Venus or Jupiter as significators, the Navamsa and the dashas, and compatibility is a matter of two charts and two people. A single label cannot say whether a person will marry or when. If a relationship is in difficulty, a counsellor will help more than a chart.

What the label leaves out

Takshak does not describe the 7th lord, the sign of Rahu, Venus, or Jupiter’s aspect on the 7th house, which are the first things a careful reader checks.

Partial forms and softening factors

A chart with one or two planets outside the axis is partial in our calculator, and no type is given. Schools differ on planets near a node. Traditional softeners include Jupiter aspecting the 7th house, the Lagna or the Moon, and benefics in the kendras.

When the pattern is likely to be felt

Teachers who use the type say its themes come forward during a dasha or antardasha of Rahu or Ketu, or of the 7th lord. A person might then meet a significant partner, begin a joint venture, or reassess an existing relationship. These are common human events and no chart is needed to explain them. The helpful reply is to take time before commitments, meet the family and friends of the other person, and keep terms written. The Rahu Mahadasha page covers these years in more detail.

How to read it in order

First look at the 7th lord, Venus and Jupiter, then at the sign of Rahu and the Navamsa. A reading of partnership always asks about both people, so a second chart gives more than the type does. Keep the label to the end.

Steady habits

For this axis, the simplest practice is clear speech: say what you want, ask what the other person wants, and write down business terms. Keep a life of your own alongside the partnership, with friends, a hobby, and time alone. On Nag Panchami many families offer milk and prayers to the serpent deities, and that is a free and gentle tradition if you wish to keep it. No paid ritual is needed.

Check your own chart

The calculator will tell you whether your chart is Takshak. If the nodes are new to you, start with Rahu and Ketu: the past-life blueprint. For matters in a marriage that cause distress, please seek a qualified counsellor.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Takshak Kaal Sarp Dosha?

It is the type of complete Kaal Sarp with Rahu in the 7th house and Ketu in the 1st. It is named for the serpent Takshaka of the Mahabharata and is a later label not found in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

↳ Does Takshak Kaal Sarp delay or spoil marriage?

No chart placement can say so. Marriage is read from the 7th lord, Venus, Jupiter, the Navamsa and the dashas together. Many people with Takshak are happily married.

↳ Is Takshak the opposite of Anant?

It is its mirror. Anant has Rahu in the 1st house and Ketu in the 7th, while Takshak has Rahu in the 7th and Ketu in the 1st. The two nodes simply trade places on the same axis.

↳ Should I check my partner's chart for Takshak?

You may, but it is not a reason to decide anything. A match is judged by many factors, and a Kaal Sarp label on either chart is a minor and disputed one.

↳ Do I need a puja for Takshak?

No. We sell no pujas and nothing here calls for one. Clear conversation and simple prayer are the traditional first steps.
