In shortKahala Yoga forms when the lord of the 4th house and the lord of the 9th house stand in kendras from each other, with a strong ascendant lord. A second version uses the 4th lord and Jupiter. Classically it gives boldness, stubbornness and leadership of a group, but the two versions do not always agree.

Some yogas are gentle and some are not. Kahala Yoga is one of the loud ones. The classical picture is of a person who is bold, determined, sometimes obstinate, and who ends up leading a group of people, whether that is a team, a household, a small organisation or, in the old language, a small army.

It is also one of the yogas where the rule is stated differently in different places. Some sources link the lord of the 4th house with the lord of the 9th house, others link the 4th lord with Jupiter. This page sets out both versions, says where they overlap, and is honest about what cannot be settled from the information available.

How Kahala Yoga forms

Kahala is a Sanskrit word for a large drum or war trumpet, and by extension for something loud and bold. The name suits the temperament the yoga is said to give, although the texts do not explain the name directly.

Two versions of the rule are in circulation.

Version one, the 4th and 9th lords. The lord of the 4th house and the lord of the 9th house are in kendras from each other (separated by 4, 7 or 10 houses, for example one in the 1st and the other in the 7th), and the ascendant lord is strong. This is the version most often quoted in classical-based manuals, and my understanding is that it follows the Parashara tradition.

Version two, the 4th lord and Jupiter. The lord of the 4th house and Jupiter are in kendras from each other. This is the rule used by the older kundali code on this site. It does not add the strong ascendant lord condition.

Checklist for version one:

  1. Identify the sign of your 4th house and its lord, and the sign of your 9th house and its lord.
  2. Find the house each of the two planets occupies.
  3. Count the distance between them. Are they 4, 7 or 10 houses apart (counting the first house as 1, so a planet in the 1st and one in the 4th are 4 apart)?
  4. Is the ascendant lord strong?
  5. If yes, Kahala Yoga is present.

How the two versions compare

  • When the two versions coincide. If Jupiter rules your 9th house, the two versions are the same test. That happens for Aries and Cancer ascendants, where the 9th house is Sagittarius or Pisces respectively, both ruled by Jupiter.
  • When version two cannot fire. If Jupiter itself is your 4th lord (Virgo and Sagittarius ascendants), the older tool compares Jupiter with itself, and because it requires two different houses, it cannot report the yoga. A chart can be perfectly good on the classical test and invisible to that tool.
  • Who counts as “in kendra from each other”. Both versions use the distance between the two planets, not whether each is in a kendra of the ascendant. Some modern writers read the rule as both planets being in the chart’s own kendras. I follow the relative reading, which is how the older tool also applies it, but it is a point on which I have seen both forms.
  • Same house. If the two planets are in the same house, that is a conjunction, which is usually treated as a separate relationship. The older tool excludes it.
  • The classical engine on this site does not currently include Kahala Yoga, so if you do not see it in the free tool, the tool may not be testing it.

I follow version one as the main classical rule, and I mention version two because readers will meet it.

A worked illustration

This is a constructed example. Take a Leo ascendant. The 4th house is Scorpio, ruled by Mars. The 9th house is Aries, also ruled by Mars. Here the 4th and 9th lord are the same planet, so the two-planet test cannot be applied in the usual way, and a practitioner would look at the planet’s own strength and placement instead. Now take a Taurus ascendant. The 4th house is Leo, ruled by the Sun, and the 9th house is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. If the Sun is in the 1st house and Saturn is in the 7th, they are in kendras from each other. If the ascendant lord, Venus, is also strong, version one is satisfied.

What the classical texts say

Kahala Yoga is given in the classical literature on named yogas, and in works such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika and their commentaries. I am confident that the yoga is described there and that the 4th and 9th lords version is found in the Parashara tradition. I am less sure whether the 4th lord and Jupiter form is found in a primary text or is a later simplification. I am not going to give chapters or verses, because I cannot give them reliably.

The results stated in these sources are consistent in spirit. The native is bold, stubborn, valiant and energetic, commands a group or a modest following, and is sometimes described as the ruler of a few villages or the leader of a troop. The same texts are not glowing about temper: obstinacy and a forceful manner are part of the description.

The old language about armies and villages is best read as the tradition’s way of saying that the native rises to lead people and holds responsibility over land or a following. It is not a literal prediction.

What it gives in a life

As always, these are tendencies, not promises.

Leadership. The 4th lord stands for home, land, roots, inner security and the mother. The 9th lord stands for fortune, dharma, teachers and the father. When the two stand in kendras from each other, the classical idea is that the person’s roots and fortune support each other and produce a capable leader. Such people are often described as those who take charge naturally, especially in family, community or local settings.

Property and base. With the 4th lord prominent, land, property, vehicles and a solid home base are traditional themes. Whether a particular person owns property depends on the wider chart.

Courage and stubbornness. The yoga’s character note is boldness and a firm, sometimes unbending will. People with it are often admired for determination, and sometimes found difficult to persuade. A positive reading is resilience and conviction. A challenging reading is rigidity. Awareness helps.

Money and work. The yoga is not a primary wealth yoga. Work that involves managing people, land, organisations, building, agriculture, real estate, education, politics or community leadership is typical in the descriptions. For wealth indications, read the 2nd and 11th houses and the Dhana Yoga guide.

Relationships and family. The 4th house is the home. A person with this yoga may take a strong role at home and be protective of family. The same firmness can be a source of friction if it turns to stubbornness.

Why the 4th and 9th lords

It helps to understand what the two houses mean when taken together. The 4th house is the base: home, land, the mother, inner peace and the sense of where one belongs. The 9th house is the source of fortune: dharma, teachers, the father, higher principles and the luck that seems to arrive unearned. A link between their lords, made strong by the kendra relationship, joins a person’s roots to their sense of purpose. The classical picture of a bold leader follows from that: someone who acts from a secure base and with a belief that they are in the right. Conviction and security together tend to produce people who do not easily yield, which is where the stubbornness comes from.

It is also worth noticing that the 4th lord is a kendra lord and the 9th lord is a trikona lord, which is the combination behind the general idea of Raja Yoga. Kahala is therefore one of several ways the tradition expresses the link between the pillars and the houses of fortune, and it is often best read alongside the other links in the chart rather than alone.

When it is strong and when it is weak

The ascendant lord. The classical version requires it to be strong. That means in its own sign, exaltation or a friendly sign, in a kendra or trikona, unburnt and not in a dusthana. If the ascendant lord is weak, the yoga is read as a partial form.

The 4th and 9th lords themselves. Dignity matters. A 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign and a well-placed 9th lord are the best supported. Debilitation, combustion or placement in a dusthana weakens the yoga. Where debilitation is present, the classical cancellation rules can help (see Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga).

Which kendra relationship. The 4th, 7th and 10th from each other are all kendra relationships. A 7th (opposition) relationship involves mutual aspect, since planets aspect the sign opposite to them, and that gives the link extra force. A 4th or 10th relationship is a square and gives a dynamic, sometimes restless link.

Which houses the planets occupy. If the two planets are also in kendras or trikonas of the chart, the yoga is better grounded. If one falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the effect is more complicated.

Jupiter’s condition (version two). If you use the 4th lord and Jupiter form, Jupiter’s dignity and the house it rules for your ascendant matter. A strong Jupiter tempers the yoga’s forcefulness with judgment.

Malefic influence. Close conjunction with Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu adds pressure and emphasises the stubborn side.

Navamsa. If both planets are well placed in the navamsa, the yoga is considered deeper. See the navamsa calculator.

When it does not work (cancellation and common mistakes)

There is no dedicated cancellation rule. The yoga is usually read as thin when the ascendant lord is weak, when either lord is combust, debilitated and uncancelled or in a dusthana, or when the planets are heavily afflicted.

Common over-readings to avoid:

  • Mixing the two versions. Quoting the 4th and 9th lord rule and the 4th lord and Jupiter rule as if they were one. They overlap only for some ascendants.
  • Forgetting the ascendant lord. In the classical version it is part of the rule.
  • Reading “kendra from each other” as “both in the ascendant’s kendras”. The relative reading is the usual one, though you will meet both.
  • Taking the army literally. The texts use the old language of a small army for leading a following.
  • Treating the temper as destiny. The stubbornness is a tendency. Many people with the yoga channel it into perseverance.
  • Expecting property or power as a fact. The yoga suggests the capacity to lead and to hold a base. Whether that is realised is for the dasha and the wider chart to show.

Timing: when it activates

  • The mahadasha and antardasha of the 4th lord and the 9th lord (or Jupiter, in version two) are the main activation periods.
  • The ascendant lord’s periods bring out the person’s own leadership.
  • Planets occupying the 4th or 9th houses can also trigger results.

Jupiter’s transit over the 4th house, the 9th house or the natal 4th lord is commonly read as supportive. Saturn’s transit over the 4th house brings the home and roots themes to the front, often as a period of responsibility. For how dashas work, read the Mahadasha and Antardasha guide and use the Mahadasha calculator to find your current period.

How it differs from similar yogas

Raja Yoga. A Raja Yoga links a kendra lord and a trikona lord. The 4th lord is a kendra lord and the 9th lord is a trikona lord, so Kahala can be seen as a particular Raja Yoga connection, made through kendra relationship rather than conjunction or exchange, and with its own character of boldness.

Parivartana Yoga. An exchange between the 4th and 9th lords is a Maha Parivartana, which is a stronger and more direct link than Kahala. The two can overlap, since an exchange puts each planet in the other’s sign, and the houses concerned may happen to be in kendra relationship.

Lakshmi Yoga. Lakshmi Yoga concerns the 9th lord in strength and gives fortune. Kahala concerns the relationship of the 9th lord and the 4th lord and gives leadership. A chart can show both.

How to check it in your own chart

  1. Get your birth chart with an accurate time, since the ascendant decides who the 4th and 9th lords are.
  2. Identify the 4th and 9th lords.
  3. Find the house of each planet and count the distance between them.
  4. Check the ascendant lord for strength.
  5. Check dignity, combustion and aspects for the 4th and 9th lords.
  6. If you want the second version, find Jupiter’s house and count its distance from the 4th lord.
  7. Check the navamsa and the dasha timeline.

The free kundali tool lists the yogas it finds along with the rule that fired for each one. Because the tool uses the 4th lord and Jupiter version and because it cannot report the yoga for some ascendants, it is worth doing the count yourself from the planet positions as above. For the tool’s general method, see the yoga detection guide. The Jupiter in the 4th house article shows how Jupiter behaves in the house of home and roots.

Frequently asked questions

↳ What is Kahala Yoga in astrology?

Kahala Yoga forms when the lord of the 4th house and the lord of the 9th house are in kendras from each other, with a strong ascendant lord. A second version uses the 4th lord and Jupiter. It is traditionally linked with boldness, stubbornness and leadership of a group.

↳ Is Kahala Yoga formed by the 4th lord and Jupiter or the 4th and 9th lords?

Both versions are in circulation. The 4th and 9th lords version is the one usually given in classical-based manuals, and the 4th lord and Jupiter version is used by some tools. They are the same test when Jupiter rules the 9th house, as for Aries and Cancer ascendants.

↳ What does Kahala mean?

Kahala is a Sanskrit word for a large drum or war trumpet, and by extension something loud and bold. The texts do not explain why the yoga carries this name, but it fits the bold, forceful temperament the yoga is said to give.

↳ Does Kahala Yoga make a person stubborn?

The classical description includes stubbornness and a forceful manner alongside courage and leadership. It is a tendency, not a fixed trait, and many people turn it into perseverance and firm principle.

↳ Do the two planets have to be in kendras of the chart?

The usual reading is that they must be in kendras from each other, meaning 4, 7 or 10 houses apart. Some writers require both to be in the chart's own kendras, so you will see both readings.

↳ When does Kahala Yoga give results?

Mainly in the mahadasha and antardasha of the 4th and 9th lords, or of Jupiter in the second version, and in the ascendant lord's periods. Jupiter transits over the 4th or 9th house can add timing detail.
